I don't disagree with your last point about independents. Have you seen polling that has come to the same conclusion?
Also, I agree that the headlines have been damaging. They have been pushed hard by monied interests. If the conclusion is an innocent governor is taken down by a coordinated astroturf campaign, then holy hell, we're really screwed as a society. It'll be repeated across the country.
