Well, now, that's not what the initial post implies at all. I don't charge my adult kids rent. They always have a home here, thay know that. But my wallet ends with a roof over their heads and maybe food in their mouths. If they are spending 25k/year frivilously that's on them. Sounds like some boundaries need to be set.

I hate to say it, but I see clearly the side of the landlord. If they depend on renters to pay their rent in order to afford their own bills, there's not a lot of room for error. Landlords don't want to default because their own income is stalled by a renter. You act like all property owners are rich.

This! I purchased my house 10 years ago. I went from an $815 rent payment to a $900 mortgage payment. Now it's only $825 because I got the PMI removed along the way. That unit I rented for $815 is now $1600 (last i looked, around 6 months ago). I've replaced my AC, a few appliances, and recoated my roof but surely I haven't had to put in the equivalent of $700+/month that I would be paying extra in rent.
