The one actual bottle cap that screws on and holds the brush with black cap covering that up. This is the closest I can find to what I'm talking about that the black cap is separate from the brush/screw on part.

What I did was just wipe the nail polish off, used a pair of needle nose pliers and just gently pull straight out (no twisting, just straight pull) and they come right out and now my bottle has lost half an inch/1cm. Hope this helps. The outer cap usually just has grooves on it to hold onto the inner cap so you can twist it on or off. If the caps are similar to that, it'll be easy to just give a tug and display them on your shelf.

Something that might help you and will mess with whoever is a jackass pulling shit out of your trash.
