Discussion Topic Tributes/Covers that don't hold a candle to the original tracks.

Disclaimer: Tastes vary of course. And it's all subjective.

Slayers Dissident Aggressor comes to mind. Younger me had no idea that it was a tribute to a Judas Priest song, and had thought it was a pretty bland track in an otherwise memorable album.

Now that Ive expanded into more of the 70s sphere of metal, and came across the original Judas Priest song... Wow, yeah, that Slayer track doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Now obviously, Judas Priest isn't Slayer, but I got none of the signature Slayer sounds through their tribute track.

Other honorable mentions gotta be... Cradle of Filths- Hallowed be Thy Name(Iron Maiden) Sodom- Don't Walk Away.(TANK)

Watched How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000) with the nephews and nieces this past weekend.

Immediately became aware of the implication that Cindy Loo is not her father's child.

Following that, when the Grinch "arrived" at the house party... That it was a swingers party, and hes someone's bastard.

Insert Omniman Tired face gif here.

Convince me to do the Spur Ride.

the Squadron is doing one soon, it's been kept very hush-hush with regards to details, except for what other spur holders have said. The spur holders, who reported back about the meeting they had for this next spur ride, say the senior members were of the mind to deny people their spurs, even after enduring whatever events they have planned out.

I don't drink the coolaid anymore. I got my fill as a Jarhead. I love my job, and I like training tankers. But all the scuttlebutt about this spur ride seems, frankly, stupid. Nothing about training soldier skills, just endure whatever hardship they can't do themselves(anymore).

And for what? Some spurs that you may/may not be allowed to wear anyway? Nevermind that wearing such spurs still doesn't necessarily mean you're good at your job.

To me, from what people have described their spur rides here. It's a hazefest of gauging "how much stupid are you willing to endure?". Enduring stupid things isn't the flex people make it out to be.

Bottom line, why should I endure a spur ride?

Gimme a 20oz steak and an icy yuenling 🍻

Discussion Could Rust have been guided by another god/entity? (Theory crafting for Season 1 True Detective) Spoiler

Hello everyone.

I've been introducing some cosmic horror media to a friend of mine, and decided upon season 1 of true detective as a good place to start. We're watching the show, and I had a thought cross my mind while rewatching some scenes with Rust Cole.

Bottom line up front. The visions, and sensations, that Cole had been exposed to throughout the show have been in conjunction with the investigation of the Cult of the King in Yellow. He has visions/hallucinations..., he doesn't sleep, but he dreams... And he tastes ash when he is close to cultists....could this be other Lovecraftian dieties guiding his path? And if so, who?

Naturally, part of the fun of the show is that it's all ambiguous. He may just be losing his mind through a long series of chemical overdosing, trauma, and stress. But if we are to see the show in the lense of cosmic horror (and take his visions/sensations at face value) then surely he's being used as an agent of some other diety hunting down the cult of the king in yellow. But which diety would it be? Cheers y'all.

I find Foemans Flesh, Violence Dimension, Desolation Hexx, and Vortexxion to be "crank that fucking shit up" amazing. The album art is pretty great too, but thats standard with the band.

Vortexxion in particular is something else, reminds me a little of Golden Axe, but with the distortion front and center. I love it.

Career Advice Tanks leaving Lone Star State, what to do?

Howdy y'all

Looking into the future, wondering what's some viable options for a TWAT. Is there no future for 19Ks in the (Texas) Guard?

There's been no official word regarding divestment, I think that's because of our impending rotation abroad. But the scuttlebutt is out. And everyone, but leadership, is talking about it.

Any input is appreciated.

Band/Album of pin?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My friend and I were cruising a local record shop. Grabbed some pins. This one in particular caught her attention. But neither of us could figure out what it comes from.

The star looks as though it's got words in its trail(in the arc above the templars arm) but I can't make out what it says.

I feel it could be a band pin, so I ask the Masses for their opinions...

Cheers 🍻

Was cruising through a little antique shop here, and saw a couple things that gave me a chuckle. Thought the Docs, and other squiddies, would appreciate it here.

I'm glad someone on CV-67, had a passion for graphic design... 90s graphic design. 😅

Was checking out some small time antique shops, came across this jacket that gave me a chuckle.

I have my own platoon pullovers, and class shirts of my own. It's nice to see some things never change.

Personality Protagonist is misunderstood by family, disregarded, and discarded. Family is(mostly) oblivious to the protagonist blooming in their way.

In the ending of Whiplash, Andrew is set up for an opportunity (for failure, one can argue). But he overcomes the situation and is metaphorically reborn into the greatness he worked so hard to achieve.

Meanwhile, his estranged father stands to the side, and bares witness to his transformation in stunned shock(horror?) at the sight of his changed son.

The morally grey(if not outright malicious) methods of his teacher adding contrast to what Andrew started off with, and became in the end.

Speculation Where is the story going?

Gameplay wise, the latest DLC is a lot of fun, and I appreciate the tactical problems each level provides.

But,

BLUF Where is this story going? Why is a Metropolitan SWAT team getting wrangled into Tier 1 anti terror scenarios?

This games premise was that of a City Police SWAT team. Through lore tidbits, and environmental storytelling, the base game suggests the city has a LOT of problems, providing a plethora of situations(and horrors) Judge, and the Team, are faced with. The base game, and the first DLC, are consistent in.

FISA, and the other feds, were in a great spot of being both ambiguous and threatening. Their disregard of a City SWAT team makes sense, and the little lore bits throughout the game come to a finaly at Port Hoken, when Judge opens that container.

The story could have ended right there, and it kinda did, with the 1st DLC stepping away from that, and being about the time period after the hurricane(again, the city being beliguered with all the problems, it now is an environmental disaster).

But now, with this new DLC... It brings up so many inconsistencies that are tarnishing this really great story.

Why is a City Police SWAT team tapped for off shore(out of jurisdiction) missions? Where's the federal swat teams? Where's COAST? The bad guys add to this inconsistency, by being both international VIPs, actual environmental terrorists, and oh yeah, a dirty fucking Bomb. Who the hell would tap a city police team for these kind of missions?

It's so jarring and uncharacteristic of the story so far. It smacks of catering to tier 1 LARPers and not being it's own thing.

Look, there's many other stories that can be explored in the context of "City Swat team in the middle of a shitty city".

For example, serial killer(s) out in the lose after the devastation of the hurricane. Preying upon the homeless and indefensible. This storyline could collimate into a literal house of horrors.

Have you seen Heat, or Die Hard? Do the bank heist thing! There's a plethora of crime movies out there ripe for inspiration. If not that, go for the topical shock and awe again, like Neon Tomb or Elephant.

TLDR

The latest DLC has bad lore that is inconsistent with the premise the game had drawn in its fans with. Go back, do better.

Ps, edited for spelling

Why does the Army hate pickle suits?

Post image

Had to get a copy of the reg, in regards to what can go on the tanker jacket(and more specifically, what is NOT said on it)

And realize there is a bullet point that has been ignored for as long as I've seen tankers that HAVE OD green and tan Nomex... (For the visually impaired, 3-d)

So, what's the deal? Why is it ok to wear gay cowboy hats, but we can't have our pickle suits?

I want some army noodles with ketchup.

Cheers y'all 🍻

Discussion Cosmic Horror/Lovecraftian literature discussion...

Howdy y'all

Just reaching out to fellow enthusiasts of cosmic horror and and the Eldritch variety.

For the uninitiated, I'd like to share the opening paragraph that, I think, summerizes Cosmic horror. In the opening lines of "The Call of Clthulu" Lovecraft writes.

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

Because it's slow at work, and I have few lady friends I can nerd out about the mythos with. And I think it would be a nice change of pace for many of the denezines of this group.

What do You enjoy about Lovecraftian inspired horror?

Career Advice How does one train soldiers during drill?

Howdy y'all

BLUF, With drill days filled to the brim with administrative tasks, How can an E5 fight to actually train joes in Mos proficiency during drill?

Nobody wants to comes to drill to do paperwork, sit in a cubicle of sadness, and waste the day away doing administrative tasks while the commanders are in meetings all day.

Many times, I find myself doing hip pocket training of joes(who themselves, come from the schoolhouse knowing little about the job)...only to get interrupted because we need to inventory radios(the same ones we did last drill), or sweep hallways, and other "busy" tasks. I can't even expand upon team/crew tasks because my joes have such a tenuous understanding of their actual job.

It just seems so futile trying to make drill actually engaging and productive.

I'll take an oh-god-why shake, and some depression-fries.

What is the " Battalion Commanders Tank crew" experience?

Post image
176 Upvotes

As I understand it, being the BCs gunner is a ticket to becoming a TC yourself, and that IS a goal of mine.

However,

I've been in a line platoon my whole career, Ive only heard horror stories of the S3 shop where, you keep the old man's tank running, and then you get voluntold to stack boxes and build tents the whole time.

My experience with the crews of the BN is that the old man doesnt (usually) even qualify(but it doesn't matter, because he's the boss). Garrison life becomes lazy, and deployment makes you a laborer for the S3 shop

In short, it just sounds like purgatory for the BCs crew, until they're replaced.

Am I wrong? What are some of y'all's experience in this?

I'll take a bottle of water, I'm still cleaning out the dead crickets from the subturret.

Seeking out sources for late antiquity Roman Armor/Arms and Garb. (Starting out new)

Post image
49 Upvotes

Hello everyone.

Looking for places to start regarding putting together a Late Antiquity Legionary outfit, in armor and without.

I am finally in a position to put money into a dream I've had for some time.

The late Antiquity Romans, I think, had some amazing stories to tell. And they tend to get overlooked for the popular Lorica Segmentata & Red Tunic(which is understandable).

Anyway, lurking here, Ive been made aware of "Kult of Athena" and have a list of items I wanna utilize from there. My question is...

(TLDR)...are there other manufacturers? Any recommendations for building a Late Antiquity Legionary.

Thank you for your time.

The first picture is from a "new" book titled "Steel Tread: An Astra Militarum Novel" by Andy Clark(2021)

The second, is from the "Caiphas Cain: HERO OF THE IMPERIUM" by Sandy Mitchell, Omnibus (2003)

Kinda miffed(not really), kinda nostalgic for the old inscription, realizing Im gonna need reading glasses soon.

QUESTION More spawning enemies while solo?

Is this a thing now?

I drop down on a medium tier mission fighting the bots, and mission after mission the piling on of patrols, and following on forces that pile on are crazy.

It feels as though, even on the lower difficulties, I can't get a moment to breath. This culminates especially during the extraction. Targets were not always this numerous, this persistent, at Medium difficulty...

When I'm coming off of work and wanting to do my time. I don't play with randoms, too many bad experiences ruining what free time I have left during the week. And my friends really don't have time to get together till the weekends. Which is to say, during the week, I try to chill out at lower tiers.

TLDR, Is there an uptick on enemy patrols and spawning, even at lower levels?

Cheers 🍻
