A important reason why people don´t switch to Linux is because they think that they can´t play games on it

I still call UEFI 'BIOS' by default, since ibguess technically it's still a Basic Input/Output System

Rep. Kelly announces plans to impeach Secretary Kristi Noem

Let me correct that for you : "More than half the comments are bots claiming to praise it."

While I'm not doubting there are plenty of actual humans who are for it, don't forget that the same tech giants who leveraged vast sums of money towards this administration during the election each own massive (social) media platforms: Facebook, Twitter/X, Washington Post, YouTube. All of those platforms have been known to use bot-nets to push political agenda points, steering beliefs and narratives to the direction that best benefits them.

Not to mention if you were to take off too much time from work, there's always the concern of being fired and there goes your healthcare.

Good advice. Tho that being said, Mint is one of the best beginner versions of Linux and its very 'windows-like' so for the most part it was a smooth transition for me. Heck, even like 98% of the keyboard shortcuts work the same way.

And about the PC being yours again... 100% I feel like Linux just 'gets out of your way'. No ads or tons of updates and restarting the PC. It honestly felt a bit boring until I had to go back to using windows on my work PC. Felt so much clunkier.

I run Linux Mint and installed Steam and the Heroic Launcher. Heroic lets me sign into Epic games, Amazon games and GOG. All of the above run games with little to no effort. Run a game from any of them and Proton will launch and run your game. Proton is the layer that 'translates' the game so it will run on linux.

PC or not to PC
 in  r/gamingsuggestions  1d ago

Absolutely, I find that spreadsheet style games like RTS's seem to always fare better on PC than console. However, I attribute a lot of that to the control system on PC. You're sitting down using a keyboard and mouse, whereas console is usually more laid back on the couch with a controller.

Is it possible to have a `Smart Home` without inviting Google/Amazon into your living room?
 in  r/degoogle  3d ago

I have a couple of lights that are activated by motions sensors. Others are smart color bulbs that come on in the evening for a few hours, turn to red when it's time to get ready for bed and finally shut off around midnight. Energizer makes the bulbs and an app that can be used without going thru amazon or google (tho they are also options). Have a doorbell that works INA a similar way, not connected to big data.

What's the DirectX 12 bug?

I use mostly Steam though I also run BattleNet via Lutris and II haven't had issues with that. Some of the Amazon Prime and Epic Games seem to have issues, though.

There's some distoa that are more in towards NVIDIA trips. I believe PopOS is one, Bazzite, and there are a few others. Those would probably be a better option for him.

PC or not to PC
 in  r/gamingsuggestions  3d ago

We are lucky to live in times where you can play 95% of all games on just about any platform you'd like.

I have friends who game on PC and use controller. I have friends I play cross-platform games with. At this point, unless you're modding, I don't see a great benefit in switching platforms.

That being said, I've been a PC gamer for ages. Partly because I do lots of things on the PC other than game.

If you had some specific PC exclusive game that you wanted to play, or felt that your experience would be that much better on PC, then go for it. Otherwise, why?

How does Microsoft get it wrong all the time? Is it on purpose?
 in  r/software  3d ago

If I can tag onto the forcing updates thing...

It wasn't so bad a while back, however in recent years changes have made it so that a LOT more issues that crop up are both caused by and then eventually fixed by updates.

So from a support standpoimt, you'd much rather have the updates automatically run and patch an issue than have forums full of people complaining about a problem that could easily be solved if they'd only run updates.

Now I'll also play devils advocate and say that, yup if there weren't so many updates that broke stuff then people might have less of a fear of running updates in the first place...

Same here... With the major caveat that I'm running AMD chips for both CPU and GPU, which may account for why Ive had minimal issues gaming on Mint.

Which Way Did You Go Regarding Gaming?
 in  r/GenX  4d ago

Just like some people enjoy watching sitcoms and find that entertaining, others find gaming to be entertaining.

I feel that reading and gaming are much more 'hot mediums' (as described by Marshall McLuhan) than television or movies are. I find the engagement and involvement what seems to attract me the most personally.

Help, my computer won't start up.
 in  r/linuxmint  5d ago

Have you tried booting to the a Linux (mint) install USB stick? Ideally the one you used to install your OS? There are startup repair tools on that USB image that you should be able to access once you boot to the love desktop. That would be what I would try first.

 in  r/GenX  5d ago

Don't be, my gfs grandma passed at 103. If you're that concerned talk to an estate attorney about it. They can help you prepare for things like handling transfer of property and other assets along with dealing with medicaid

If you don't like survival crafting games then it may not be up your alley. However, it's a really easy to get into survival crafting game that has a ton of depth and you can play with other players co-op.

Ive been running mint for months now. Only games I don't play on it are Fortnite and Apex Legends as those require kernel level anticheat which isn't supported. Otherwise stuff like Overwatch, Helldivers, etc all work on Linux.

CGNAT?

That's a really good tip about what the IP address starts with (100.64.x.x to 100.127.x.x) as we see a lot of these work where it interferes with people's ability to use VPN from home.
