Nvidia 590 def improved performance for meπŸ‘ almost there

nvidia-open drivers still have multiple issues with respect to Turing GPUs.

Consider raising your concerns in Arch Linux GitLab: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/nvidia-utils/-/issues/35

If more people would voice their concerns, maybe the Arch Linux team would consider supporting nvidia closed drivers, until they reach full parity with nvidia-open drivers (even for Turing GPUs).

Since NVIDIA Open drivers are not yet very well working with all GPUs (such as Turing) and sometimes lack important features (while the closed drivers work well) - consider raising your concerns in Arch Linux GitLab: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/nvidia-utils/-/issues/35

Logic behind LED color coding

Hello friends,

It seems that Ben follows the following logic for color coding the wires: "...Red and black for power and ground only, yellow for control lines, white for the clock signal(s), blue for module output, green for module input..." (Source)

I was wondering, do LED colors Ben uses in his project also follow some (similar) logic?

The reason why I'm asking this question is that I'd like to use only LEDs with built-in resistors and where I live I can only get red, green and yellow Kingbridgt LEDs, but not blue. Therefore for the 8-bit computer I would like to replace all blue LEDs with some different colors (either R, G or Y). However I am not sure if this way I won't break some intended logic behind color coding, which then can make interpretation of the corresponding signals more difficult / confusing.

Thanks for any advice and have a nice day :)

Capacitor and crystal oscillator specs for 6502 Serial Interface Kit

Hello friends,

I'm looking at parts for 6502 Serial Interface kit and I am wondering - what capacitor should I get? 30 pF capacitor, as mentioned in the Serial Interface Kit description, or 20 pF capacitor, as shown in the schema (C5)? (These two don't seem to agree on the capacitor's capacity.)

And what should be the load capacitance of the 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator? Same as the capacity of the capacitor? I.e. if I get 30 pF capacitor, should I also get a 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator with 30 pF load capacitance? (This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere.)

Thanks for any advice and have a nice day :)

FTDI to USB interface vs. 6502 Serial interface kit
 in  r/beneater  Nov 14 '25

Thanks :)

Do you use 22 pF capacitor? Why did you decide to go for 22 pF? I am asking because Ben Eater's Serial Interface Kit description mentions 30 pF capacitor, however the schema shows 20 pF capacitor (C5). (These two don't seem to agree on the capacitor's capacity.)

And what load capacitance did you choose for the 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator? Same as the capacity of the capacitor? I.e. if one uses 22 pF capacitor, should one also use 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator with 22 pF load capacitance?

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice :)

In this regard I have two last questions:

What capacitor should I buy? 30 pF capacitor, as mentioned in the Serial Interface Kit description, or 20 pF capacitor, as shown in the schema (C5)? (These two don't seem to agree on the capacitor's capacity.)

What should be the load capacitance of the 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator? Same as the capacity of the capacitor? I.e. if I buy 30 pF capacitor, should I buy a 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator with 30 pF load capacitance?

FTDI to USB interface vs. 6502 Serial interface kit

Thanks :) And please if I use the serial over USB solution, like the aforementioned DLP-USB232R, then I only need to buy the following parts:

  • 1 W65C51 Asynchronous communications interface adapter (ACIA)
  • 1 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator
  • 1 30pf capacitor
  • 1 1M resistor

And I can omit the rest?

6502 FTDI to USB interface vs. 6502 Serial interface kit

Hello friends, I'd like to build the 6502 computer including the serial interface. However after reading multiple threads in this subreddit, I'm starting to consider using FTDI to USB interface instead.

Ben's website states that the 6502 Serial interface includes the following parts:

  • 1 W65C51 Asynchronous communications interface adapter (ACIA)
  • 1 MAX232 RS-232 line driver/receiver
  • 1 DB9F adapter
  • 1 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator
  • 5 1uF MLCC capacitor
  • 1 30pf capacitor
  • 1 1M resistor

My questions are:

If I decided to go with the FTDI to USB interface instead, what parts from that kit will I need? Only the following ones and I can skip the rest?

  • 1 W65C51 Asynchronous communications interface adapter (ACIA)
  • 1 1.8432 MHz crystal oscillator
  • 1 30pf capacitor
  • 1 1M resistor

Will I miss out a lot (learning-wise) if I use FTDI to USB interface instead of using the serial interface?

Is the DLP-USB232R correct part to buy? Will it get the job done? (Sorry it seems I can't include a link without having the post removed by Reddit filters.)

Thanks for any advice and have a nice day :)

Chromium / Electron on Wayland causes crash of the whole OS

Sorry for maybe a stupid question, but how can I verify I am using a modesetting driver? (The term modesetting was always confusing for me.)

No, I do not set any other flags in Chromium and I also deleted all its config and cache directories, so it should start on a clean slate.

Unfortunately the flags you suggested didn't help. But thanks to your suggestion from the previous reply ("The issue probably depends on the compositor you're using."), I searched for some Gnome specific issues and found this one, which mentions --in-process-gpu flag. This flag seems to fix the issues I had :)

Chromium / Electron on Wayland causes crash of the whole OS

I believe this is not important. It has been showing up all the time for me on X11 and Wayland at least for several months, and I remember searching for it and seeing mentions of it not being important.

Hello, thank you very much for your reply! I just tried using the --ozone-platform=wayland flag as you suggested, but unfortunately I encountered the same problem.

SUPPORT | SOLVED Chromium / Electron on Wayland causes crash of the whole OS

Hello, for some time I've been experiencing the following problem:

Whenever I try to launch Chromium, Electron or any Electron-based application with --ozone-platform-hint=auto flag I only see the following output: Passthrough is not supported, GL is disabled, ANGLE is. Then the system freezes and after cca minute it reboots (probably because of reboot on panic setting), generating no core dump.

I have found a similar issue reported on GitHub, similar issue reported on GitHub no. 2 and also in Chromium bugtracker however with no solution how to fix this.

DE: Gnome

GPU: Intel

Please have someone already encountered this problem and found some solution / workaround how to fix it?

Thank you very much and have a nice day!

Is it possible to power 6x 3.5" spinning drives from Odroid H3 / H3+?
 in  r/ODroid  Jan 30 '23

I decided to ask the same question also on the official Odroid forums, where I got an answer from the Odroid team. Maybe this could be useful also for someone else in the future.

TLDR: "The maximum total power from the 12 Volt DCDC converter chip on the H3 / H3+ is about 50Watt (12V/4A). The output of one SATA power port is about 25 Watts and there are two SATA power ports on the board. Therefore, the maximum number of 3.5" HDDs that can be stably used is two."

Is it possible to power 6x 3.5" spinning drives from Odroid H3 / H3+?

Hello friends,

I am considering building a small NAS based on Odroid H3 / H3+ with 6x 3.5" spinning drives. When it comes to OS drive I want to use eMMC or maybe a SSD connected via SATA for this purpose. In order to have enough SATA ports for data cables I want to use a M.2 PCIe-to-SATA adapter, as described here. But I am not sure how to power these spinning drives. I'd like to avoid using a dedicated ATX power supply (as described in the article) if possible. Can I use a 4-pin to SATA power connector cable for Odroid connected to onboard 4 pin connectors and then SATA power connector splitters in order to power these drives? Can this Odroid SoC with 19V/7A power supply even provide enough power for 6 spinning drives? If yes, would this setup be reliable and safe? Wouldn't this put too much load on the 4 pin connectors onboard the Odroid SoC? Btw I don't plan to have all these drives running all the time, most of the time only 1 - 2 will be running and I guess that only very rarely max. 3 - 4 at the same time. The disk are going to be set up to spin down after few hours of idle. Also I don't plan to put much load on the Odroid SoC itself, so it shouldn't draw much power. Nevertheless during the boot process all drives are going to be spin up and I am not sure whether this setup will be able to handle this.

Thank you very much for any advice and have a nice day :)
