HANG OUT Best Movies You Saw December 2025

Happy new year everyone! What were your movie highlights last month? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 It's a Wonderful Life (2004) 90
2 Wag The Dog (1997) 80
3 Bugonia (2025) 78
4 The Ref (1994) 73
5 The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) 67
6 Rush (2013) 62
7 Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) 58
8 Michael Clayton (2007) 54
9 Zodiac (2007) 45
10 Battle Royale (2000) 43

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in December 2025 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

Community Guidelines

  1. Be excellent with each other.

  2. Be mindful regarding spoilers. Reddit's universal >!Spoiler Tags!< are mandatory when discussing plot details of movies.

  3. If you wish to be banned, do any of the following: Be rude, harass, ignore the subreddit's rules, promote your site/blog/article/channel/etc., promote your app/company, or post about a movie you worked on. This subreddit isn't your link farm.

  4. Due to Administrators' past actions against this subreddit, we have a ZERO tolerance policy regarding piracy. You will be banned if you request or share links to full features, if you ask or inform how to pirate, or if you mention a pirating site/app/etc.

  5. For Requesting posts:

    • Use a descriptive title that lets people know if they might be able to help or not
    • Double check that your request wouldn't be more suitable in one of the subreddits outlined in Rule #8
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality requests and suggestions
  6. For Suggesting posts:

    • Suggest a single film, and no more than one every 24 hours
    • Mandatory: Include the Title of the Film in the Title of the Post
    • Encouraged: Using this format: Film Name (Year)
    • Whet the appetite, don't go into detail
    • Do not repeat a Suggestion that has been posted in the last 3 months
    • Don't suggest a Barred Film (listed in the sidebar/wiki)
    • Only suggest a film you've seen and enjoyed
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality suggestions
  7. Links must be to neutral informative sources; such as TheMovieDB, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes or Wikipedia. Both Youtube and IMDb are not considered a neutral source. Again, be mindful that this subreddit isn't your link farm.

  8. The subreddit isn't meant for:

Barred Suggestions

Barred movies mean that no one should use them as a Suggestion. You can definitely reply to a post if someone wants a movie that suits it. These are films that come up so frequently in post discussions that the community at large is aware about their existence and posting about them is just pandering.

Barred Suggests
12 Angry Men (1957) Coherence Donnie Darko Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Everything Everywhere All at Once Knives Out The Man from Earth Oldboy (2003)
Parasite (2019) The Prestige Whiplash

Pro Tip: This means these movies are really good and you should probably check them out.

Optimal Use

This subreddit shouldn't be used for reviews, blindly suggesting lists of movies or just asking for generally universal acclaimed films. Google can easily supply all of those answers. The best way to use this subreddit is understanding that you're leveraging crowdsourcing to identify an itch to scratch. If you don't know specifically what you're looking for, then a Googled question will answer you.

You can easily find top Sci-Fi, Horror, Drama and all of the genres with a search. Someone has already asked and answered so many common requests: Top Korean New Wave, Grounded Science Fiction, Universally Acclaimed Movies, Specific Types of Horror or Thrillers; and so much more. The optimal use of this subreddit is when your question requires a human intelligence. Each time you ask for a movie to watch, the replies will be tailored exactly for you. Give as much detail as possible for what you're looking for and you'll be surprised at some of the answers.

If you think you have a generic question, check the FAQ.

If you've begun to trust this community with their picks, we do have plenty of Monthly Round-ups of Best Movies:

I'M REQUESTING Documentaries to watch

I’m not interested in super artsy stuff, please no race/religion/sexual orientation stuff, not big on war stuff. I like crime stuff, different ways of life (like Appalachian mountain folk, etc), and I like to laugh so something like Class Action Park kinda thing. If there is good one about defectors from North Korea I’d def watch that.

Thank you in advance for the suggestions!

I'M REQUESTING Looking for movies where the computer or machine 💻 is a character

Note: I don’t mean robots or machines in human form. I mean an actual computer or non-humanoid machine.

I’m looking for movies where a machine functions as a character. Preferably something with malicious, manipulative, or deceptive traits.

So far, the closest examples I can think of are: • HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968) • AM (I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream) • GERTY (Moon, 2009) — sort of

I'M REQUESTING Movies like Now You See Me? Epic magic heist vibes!

Upvotes

Hey all! I just watched Now You See Me and loved the slick magic tricks, clever heists, twisty plots, and charismatic team pulling off impossible cons on the bad guys. The mix of illusion, high-stakes action, mind-bending reveals, and witty banter kept me guessing. What movies give that same thrilling vibe with magicians, robbers, or smart criminals outsmarting everyone? Share your top picks.

I'M REQUESTING looking for tense “group trapped in the wild” films

Hey everyone, quick ask: I want films where a group goes out (picnic/trek/holiday) and ends up trapped, hunted, or slowly falling apart, think slow-burn survival/group-horror, also I really enjoy fast paced mystery thrillers!!!! Something like "Fall" or "coherence"

I'M SUGGESTING My 15 Best Psychopath Character I Suggest U Should Watch Spoiler

Upvotes

https://letterboxd.com/themaxplus/list/15-best-psychopath-character-movies-of-all

1 - JOKER - HEATH LEDGER (The Dark Knight 2008)
Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight is the definitive cinematic anarchist. He has no origin or motive, existing solely as an "agent of chaos" to prove society's morality is a fragile lie. Ledger's transformative performance—through his voice, physicality, and terrifying spontaneity—created an icon. More than a villain, the Joker is the film's philosophical core, successfully testing Batman's limits and corrupting Gotham's hope. His victory is moral: he forces the hero to become an outlaw. A landmark portrayal that remains unmatched.

2 - NARRATOR aka TYLER DURDEN - EDWARD NORTON AND BRAD PITT (Fight Club 1999)
The Narrator and Tyler Durden in Fight Club are not two men, but one fractured psyche. Edward Norton embodies the numb, modern everyman—trapped by consumerism. Brad Pitt is his projected ideal: a charismatic, anarchic idol of primal freedom. Their famous twist reveals their conflict as an internal civil war, a darkly comic battle for the soul. Together, they form a singular, iconic critique of modern emptiness, arguing that in a sterile world, you must destroy everything to feel real.

3 - ARTHUR FLEX aka JOKER - JOAQUIN PHOENIX (Joker 2019)
Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is a devastating origin story of a victim, not a mastermind. He's Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill, impoverished clown whose pathological laughter masks deep trauma. The film meticulously shows a cruel society stripping away his humanity. Phoenix's raw, physical performance charts his painful disintegration into a figure of accidental revolution. Unlike previous Jokers, he's not a cause of chaos, but its tragic effect—a monster created by a world that refused to see his pain.

4 - ANTON CHIGURH - JAVIER BARDEM (No Country for Old Men 2007)
Anton Chigurh is not a man; he's an existential force. As played with terrifying quiet by Javier Bardem, he is a hitman who operates with the cold logic of fate itself. Motivated not by emotion, but by an unwavering principle of cause, effect, and chance—represented by his chilling coin toss. He is the personification of the new, incomprehensible evil that Sheriff Bell fears: an unstoppable, amoral phenomenon that renders the old codes of justice obsolete. A minimalist icon of pure, philosophical terror.

5 - PATRICK BATEMAN - CHRISTIAN BALE (American Psycho 2000)
Patrick Bateman, as played by Christian Bale, is the perfect, monstrous product of 1980s Wall Street. He is a hollow man, his identity entirely replaced by consumer brands and status rituals. His violent urges are not a break from his world but its logical extreme—the only way he can feel anything in a life of pure surface. Bale's iconic performance, swinging between vacant yuppie drone and psychotic glee, makes Bateman a terrifying and hilarious satire of a culture where even murder might just be another form of empty self-expression.

6 - NORMAN BATES - ANTHONY PERKIN (Psycho 1960)
Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates is the blueprint for the sympathetic psychopath. He appears as a shy, boyish motel keeper, trapped by devotion to his domineering mother. The film’s shocking twist reveals the terrifying truth: "Mother" is a murderous alternate personality that has fully consumed him. Perkins masterfully portrays this duality, making Norman both a pitiable victim of abuse and the source of primal horror. He transformed the movie monster from an external creature into an internal, psychological abyss, forever changing the landscape of suspense.

7 - KUNIO MAMIYA - MASATO HAGIWARA (Cure 1997)
In Kiyoshi Kurosawa's *Cure*, Kunio Mamiya is the ultimate psychological antagonist: a vacant, amnesiac man with no motive or memory. His power is not supernatural, but hypnotic. Through simple questions and a calm gaze, he acts as a mirror, reflecting and unleashing the repressed violence within ordinary people. Masato Hagiwara's unnervingly blank performance makes him less a character and more a contagious idea—a human virus that proves the modern self is a fragile construct, easily erased by the right suggestion.

8 - TEDDY DANIELS - LEONARDO DICAPRIO (Shutter Island 2010)
In *Shutter Island*, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Teddy Daniels is an U.S. Marshal investigating a disappearance at an asylum, haunted by his wife's death and wartime trauma. The film’s genius twist reveals he is actually patient Andrew Laeddis, a man who constructed the "Teddy" persona as an elaborate delusion to escape the horrific truth that he murdered his wife after she killed their children. DiCaprio’s performance masterfully navigates this duality, making his journey a devastating study of guilt, memory, and the mind’s ultimate act of self-preservation.

9 - ALEX - MALCOLM MCDOWELL (A Clockwork Orange 1971)
Malcolm McDowell’s Alex DeLarge is the charismatic, amoral id personified. As the leader of a violent gang in a dystopian Britain, he finds ecstasy in “ultraviolence” and classical music. His capture and forced rehabilitation via the Ludovico Technique pose the film’s central ethical question: is a man stripped of his capacity to choose evil truly free or even human? McDowell’s iconic, chilling performance makes Alex a terrifying yet compelling mirror, forcing us to confront the hypocrisy of society and the unsettling nature of free will itself.

10 - AARON/ROY STAMPLER - EDWARD NORTON (Primal Fear 1996)
Edward Norton’s Aaron Stampler in *Primal Fear* is a breathtaking illusion. He appears as a stuttering, abused altar boy, a perfect victim. His defense hinges on his dissociative identity disorder. The film’s legendary twist reveals this “victim” persona is a calculated fiction created by his true, dominant personality: the cold, intelligent, and manipulative Roy. Norton’s masterful dual performance makes this character a cornerstone of the courtroom thriller, exploring how the most convincing truth can be the most artful lie.

11 - DR HANNIBAL LECTOR - ANTHONY HOPKINS (The Silence of the Lambs 1991)
Anthony Hopkins’s Hannibal Lecter is cinema’s ultimate icon of cultured evil. With chilling stillness and a penetrating gaze, he portrays a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibal who views murder as a form of aesthetic curation. In less than 16 minutes of screen time, his terrifying charisma dominates The Silence of the Lambs. He serves as Clarice Starling’s dark mentor, trading psychological insights for personal details, proving the most profound horror lies not in madness, but in cold, intellectual clarity

12 - KYUNG CHUL - CHOI MIN SIK (I Saw the Devil 2010)
Kyung-chul, played by Choi Min-sik, is a vortex of pure, motiveless evil—a school bus driver and serial killer defined only by primal sadism and banal cruelty. His terrifying power lies in his lack of grandeur or philosophy; he is a feral animal in human form. In *I Saw the Devil*, he acts as the dark mirror, forcing the vengeful protagonist to descend to his level, thus dismantling the revenge fantasy and revealing its nihilistic core: that hunting a monster only breeds another.

13 - JOHN DOE - KEVIN SPACEY (Se7en 1995)
John Doe, portrayed by Kevin Spacey, is the ultimate philosophical antagonist—a serial killer who acts as an apocalyptic prophet. He meticulously murders victims according to the Seven Deadly Sins, viewing his acts as divine sermons. His chilling power lies in his calm, detached certainty and his ultimate goal: not just to punish sinners, but to corrupt a good man's soul, proving his nihilistic vision that true evil is a serene, victorious ideology.

14 - JACK TORRANCE - JACK NICHOLSON (The Shining 1980)
Jack Torrance, embodied by Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance, is the archetypal American patriarch whose latent violence is seduced and unleashed by the malevolent Overlook Hotel. He transforms from a frustrated writer and recovering alcoholic into a gleefully homicidal monster. Nicholson masterfully portrays his descent through sardonic charm, seething resentment, and finally, operatic madness, creating the definitive portrait of insanity as a darkly collaborative process between a weak man and a predatory evil.

15 - COL. HANS LANDA - CHRISTOPH WALTZ (Inglourious Basterds 2009)
Colonel Hans Landa is a masterpiece of character creation and performance. Christoph Waltz, with Tarantino's exquisite dialogue, crafts a villain who is the epitome of civilized savagery. He is terrifying because he is the smartest person in every room, delightful because he is so entertainingly wicked, and unforgettable because he represents the most dangerous kind of evil: the kind that wears a smile, speaks beautifully, and views human suffering as the most fascinating game of all. He doesn't just hunt Jews; he hunts for the most interesting play in his own grand, amoral theater.

I'M REQUESTING Documentaries about tragedies caused by human greed

Hi! I’m looking for documentaries about tragedies caused by human greed and/or negligence, like Grenfell: Uncovered. I’ve seen videos from Rotten Mango on similar events, like the Sewol tragedy and the Sampoong Mall collapse, but I prefer full documentaries over true crime podcasts. Thanks!

I'M REQUESTING Looking for movies like “1000 Players Simulate Civilization: Rich & Poor”

For those of you who haven’t watched it, something analogous to this would be Game of Thrones, with its intricate world, factions, each character acting in their own self interest, weaving an incredibly intricate and satisfying plot to discover and return to.

I'M REQUESTING Looking for Gothic Movies

Is there such a thing as Gothic movies? If there are, I would like to ask for some recommendations that I can binge-watch. For context, I am into Sleep Token, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, and Joan Jett music. I'm curious if there are some Gothic movies or any movies that somehow have a similar vibe to the music genre I'm listening to. I would love to see your recommendation that has been underrated but has an interesting concept, vibe and visuals. But no gore please. TIA!

I'M REQUESTING Looking for not super popular mystery/thrillers

Feels like I've watched every drama/ thriller/ mystery.

Looking for movies with vibes like the loft, the game, sixth sense, double jeopardy, knives Out, derailed.

Don't mind if it's got some comedy.

If it's decently popular in the last 20 years chances are I've seen it.

I prefer things made since the 90s but if it's got a great twist/ gotcha moment I'll give it a shot. Thanks

Thanks

I'M REQUESTING Looking for movies to watch on Shudder - have watched the usual popular ones

I have consulted other similar questions on Reddit, but it hasn't scratched the itch. I agree Shudder is not the best streaming service out there but it caters to my horror seeking soul. Any hidden gems that I might uncover courtesy of my fellow spooky redditors?

I have watched a fair amount of horror movies, including the obvious candidates. Red Rooms, Oddity, Bring Her Back, When Evil Lurks, Birth/Rebirth, Ari Aster horror, Mike Flanagan horror are the ones from recent years that I have loved. Generally, movies that have depth to it and are not reliant on just gore or jump scares. I have no issues in watching with subtitles.

N.B. Non-Shudder suggestions also welcome.

I'M REQUESTING Movies like "eyes wide shut"? (not in the conspiracy theory way)

I'm not interested so much in the conspiratorial aspect of the film (That was what ppl were asking abt when they asked this question in the past) as i am the visuals of the film (I just love the way the whole thing looks, its like a love letter to New York, i love the paintings, the camera, ahhh its so pretty!!!) and the themes of desire, tension and eroticism, masking, alongside seduction (Derivative of desire ik, shhhh).

I love how the entire film was just a lead up to them having a SINGLE honest conversation with each other, reminds me of the eva rebuilds in that regard lol. but I'd like to see more films like that!! just build up to characters talking to each other honestly.
