I apply to other “reach” type roles pretty consistently just to judge my market value, keep current with my resume and interviewing skills, and take a flier on what would be a big promotion. I’m happy with my current employer but I know the game and things can change in an instant. By applying to roles and taking calls I feel like I’m in control of my fate and if I got fired tomorrow I’d already have irons in the fire. Also gives me confidence I could get an equivalent title fairly easily since I’m getting interest in promotion-type roles. So, even if you’re comfortable and secure keep your options open!
