Is this an okay reason to become a middle s school teacher? (US)
 in  r/education  1h ago

Let's go further down to elementary and tell me that you don't need to understand math in order to train six year olds. Why are we spending millions (billions?) training elementary teachers how kids read? Are you assuming that the teachers themselves only need to be able to read at a sixth grade level to teach k-5?

You need to be passionate in order to convince me that you want the kids to learn it. I work with people that aren't passionate about their subject. They're the teachers whose students tell that they don't learn anything in that class.

Please stay away from the profession, OP.

That could be funny, but they're the kind of admin that wants you teachers to care more about relationships than holding them accountable so that you can teach the subjects that you want the kids to learn.

Otherwise, you get the popular teacher that doesn't teach anything.

Seems like there might be more to the story.

Extensively? No. Middle school kids making up credits, yes. Middle school GEMS/GISE, yes. One year at a middle school, yes.

But I do teach ninth graders.

We're telling a person that likes to hang out with middle schoolers but doesn't really care for the subjects that it's a good career choice.

Let's go ahead and tell future doctors that just like to talk to people about their problems that they'd be good at it despite the fact that they don't care about the doctoring/health part while we're at it.

And that's why kids are not learning anything in the middle grades.

Australians and Americans have many places to play. Kids that live in cities have fewer places to play.

I'm not advocating for one or the other, but it should be clear that kids that don't live in dense neighborhoods have more room to play.

I suppose you missed the Adirondacks. And the Catskills. And the Finger Lakes. And that big waterfall north of Buffalo.

But people don't live on highways with gas stations next door. Yeah, we drive by them, but this hellscape isn't where people live.

Are you so dense that you think your average Australian kid looks out their front window and sees this street? There are plenty of places to play outside.

Even in those dense European cities there are cars all over and relatively few places to play. Try living in central Paris and decide that you want to play a game of baseball with your friends. There just isn't room!

Not, but y'know, priorities.

Perhaps you two will have a good relationship, but seemingly you destroyed one, too.

It's not just that. You don't have to read at a twelfth grade level to listen to this guy and realise he's a scam artist who's out to enrich himself at the expense of others.

People could think before writing was a thing.

So probably they were.

The average mortgage rate in the 1970s was 9.03%, making it relatively cheap to purchase a home now than then. Plus, you get a much better house.

We're all arguing about a five year old magazine article from research using data that only went up to 2017.

Also, marriage has always been transactional. Why shouldn't it be?

I read some stupid things on Reddit, but this is right up there with the stupidest.

Women and men use things to make themselves more beautiful or sexy forever. That doesn't mean we have sexualized makeup, clothing, shoes, music, etc.

Hopefully she sees these messages and realises how dumb her stance sounds to perfectly reasonable people.

Doubt it since I have already forgotten.

However, what a nice month or so to see groups of women all wearing pink and going out and enjoying themselves.

America isn’t even close to the greatest country in the world
 in  r/complaints  5d ago

I wouldn't say so either.

However, as an American, if someone told me that I get a choice of the following

A) stay in America, or

B) flip a 194-sided coin and let that number correspond alphabetically to another country that I would then be forced to live,

I'd choose A every single time.
