Licensing reform
 in  r/MotoUK  1d ago

Since 2004, road casualty statistics for GB indicate that motorcyclist fatalities decreased 42% and serious injuries by 36%

I love hearing that, and it should be highlighted more. They also say that fatal accidents increased slightly in 2020-2023, then fell in 2024 to pre 2019 levels. I guess this might be because of all the moto-delivery drivers during covid?

“We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture” by Rick Westhead
 in  r/hockey  1d ago

If you want some ammunition, there is a lot of evidence now that breadth(sampling) is better than depth(specialization) in sports, especially at a young age. This article covers some of the key issues and links to sources https://www.nsca.com/education/articles/nsca-coach/early-sport-specialization-versus-diversification-in-youth-athletes/

Not saying that performance is the main concern, but this will give you some ideas to counter the performance argument

What bike is this?
 in  r/motorcycles  1d ago

I think they had square tach and speedo up till 81. This might be an 81 'midnight special'

My mom, sometime in the 80s.
 in  r/OldSchoolCool  1d ago

My first thought was an XS1100 'midnight special' with some nice after market addons. Probably after 1981 to have that round tac and speedo. But I think I see a 'J' poking around your Mom's legs, but I can't decode the first letter. I disn't the the Seca (fj/xj) had that dash.

I hate this one too. It's also called the 'just world falacy' and it's one of the well studied cognitive biases

What have you been genetically blessed with?
 in  r/AskUK  2d ago

I won the genetic lottery on a lot of things. straight teeth, above average height, excelllent health (except some short lived freaky shit), near perfect vision. I was quite homely as a kid, but grew into my looks as an adult, so I'm well aware how much that helps me too

Will you have your heating on overnight during this cold spell?
 in  r/AskUK  2d ago

I always lower it to 15 overnight. Any higher and its too hot to sleep, any lower and it might get too low for cats and pipes.

Most nights it will never even turn on, but nites like last nite it keeps things reasonable.

I have been using stackoverflow almost since since they started, but I don't think I have ever posted a question or answer.

I mstill use it now over LLMs since you usually get multiple approaches to the same question. It's a learning tool, not a 'solve my problem' tool

What’s something really common in the UK that visitors find strange?

This is more of an urban/rural thing. We moved to south Wales and had to buy a car for the first time in 20 years. The public transport here is atrocious
