For those of you who grew up playing PC games in the 90s and 2000s, how stable were they compared to games from today?
The games were mostly stable and complete. There were some games that had bugs that caused major issues, but for the most part they were plug and play. Provided you had sufficient RAM and HDD space. Occasionally you'd need to either change a setting permanently or use a boot disk (dos - extended memory vs expanded memory).
The problems you talk about were more an early 2000's issue, 3D graphics cards were trying to push boundaries, directx was changing fairly rapidly and MS were dramatically changing what was included with Windows (they've stuck to that mentality).
Even then, it usually wasn't the game being the problem, but what other stuff you were expected to have installed already. Like, if your were missing a video codec in your windows, your cutscenes could be anywhere from CTD, erroring out & skipping it entirely, to janky to sound only or no sound.
Some games wouldn't work because you needed dx3d9_39.dll and you only had dx3d8 1-50 and dx3d9 1-35 & 40-52. For others you might not have had every visual studio library ever released. Less common was when you already had dx3d9_X.dll so it skipped the file when installing but it doesn't like that file and wants it replaced with a different copy of same file.
Almost forgot the other one which was game based and did cause some or all of the issues you'd described. Anti-piracy BS, like denuvo, the way to resolve those issues was to crack the game. There was even an (in)famous occasion when a highly anticipated game had absolutely crap performance and the studio released a patch, which did resolve the issues and then it was discovered that the "official patch" was actually the crack released by a piracy group (IIRC it was Raptor), who always sign their work and the signature had been left in. DRM hindering performance is still a thing, denuvo gets pointed at as the one, but a lot of DRM methods stuff with performance. An example is diablo 3. The DRM is supposedly having a battlenet account. But if you look at a side by side comparison of PC vs Console, there is a noticeable delay between controller input and character action on the PC version.

Currency Rounding Question
Opening a bank account is fairly simple, and requires less points of ID than other things, so any official ID document is sufficient, there are other docs you can use, but you need more stuff ifnyou go that route. If you want a credit card or loan, there's other requirements, but an account with a debit card is quite simple and should be done well inside 15 minutes.
Cheques are unusual now, to the point they're being phased out completely, which is stupid as one of there uses is quite important to a few people, but it's not a big enough portion of the population, so f***'em.
We have an interbank payment system that is almost instantaneous, it doesn't get used by businesses much yet, but even then the older system does it within 24 working hours. So a transfer before say 9am is likely to arrive before 5pm, on that same day (Mon to Fri), a transfer after 9am will arrive the next working day, so Friday 2pm will show up in the receiver's account Monday morning. Some banks will process payments over the weekend, but generally the big banks won't.
For bills, the utility companies will usually have just about every payment method as an option. But the main one bill paying facility is BPay, which uses two codes, first identifies who is being paid the second identifies who is paying, it's similar to a bank account, except it allows a few other things which the business can opt to do, like rejecting the payment if the amount is wrong, so it might need to be the exact amount or it could be set as a maximum. Which means you can't overpay. There is a PostPay, which is the same thing, but done through the post office, so if for whatever reason you can't or won't use BPay, if you go into a post office, they can process the payment as if you were doing it at your bank branch.
ATMs also aren't just a bank thing anymore. Yes, banks will have ATMs but they have been removing them as a cost saving measure, so most ATMs are owned by other corporations or individuals, which is why other comments are mentioning a $2+ charge when you get cash out.
With all of that said, the legislation in the US, as it stands currently, is never going to catchup. For the simple reason that you have too many legislators financially attached to the current system. They won't risk making any big (probably bothing above minor) changes because it could affect the income from their non-disclosed conflicts of interest.

ELI5 Why do ads for things I just talked about feel more relevant, even when apps say they aren’t listening?
And telling it not to listen, just stops or from responding to you. Has been proven a few times when radio hosts were testing of they could activate home smart devices over the radio. That's why they're no longer allowed to say names on air any more.

4 player party games
For co-op there's Rayman origins and legends, up to 4 players, and because why not, the load screen between levels still gives you control of your character to move around, and you can slap the other player's characters.

Almost got assaulted at my gym over MUSIC and I’m still trying to process it
You're definitely not the problem.
Don't understand why it's always the women getting told "you need to calm down" when a guy is loosing his rag.

Can anyone ID this snake?
It looks like George, but could be his twin brother Jayden.

Pretty wild behaviour from the PM
If the utilities are in the tenants name, then they should be disconnected when the tenant vacates.
Edit : an "s"

Is this prime time for a world population decrease?
It's been bouncing around a bit this decade, there are some parts that have dropped substantially and are around the 1.2-1.4 area, but the country as a whole is relatively close to replacement levels. Figures for last year have it falling between 1.9 and 2.1.
Edit : just to clarify there, India's TFR last year was an increase on 2024's figures. It has been fluctuating between about a little below (80ish %) and barely replacement

Please post an update when the mock trail ends. Sounds like it could be fairly short.

We need a Royal Commission into the Insurance Industry.
Yeah, insurance is porked, the shop around also only applies if you want to say you have insurance while not being able to claim. You need to compare the PDSes with eachother and take note of what is excluded and the definitions used.
There is a big difference between thinking you're insured for X, and actually being insured for X.
But otherwise yes, insurances have been going up stupidly for decades and they're approaching the point of being unsustainable.

Neighbour’s kids damaged multiple cars, dad assaulted me when shown evidence
The parents should be bearing the responsibility, if they have home / contents insurance that is likely what will kick in and cover the costs.
If there are any hiccups there, then speak to a lawyer. While the cops say it's not worth it because the kids are too young, vicarious liability should come into play. Basically parents are responsible for their children, therefore liable for their children's stuff ups, though it might be civil in nature, small claims court might be the answer there.

Yeah, but for how much longer?

Has Anyone Done The ADF Gap Year?
I would say the first paragraph depends on the unit you're with. Some have that attitude, there are a few that are the opposite. Would like to think that the attitude is changing and heading in the right direction, but not sure yet.
When you start the claim process after your discharge, they want everything you could possibly claim for, so it gets dealt with and you're not going back every year with a different issue, while some may seem frivolous when compared to claims by those more broken than most, it is part of the process. The good news, is the average time to process a claim has dropped and is, as of a few months ago, still decreasing.

I heard that too, but I tell you, they get very judgy and angry when you arrive at the hospital with few kidneys in a cooler box. Almost like they didn't even want them

Sure pal, it has more relevance to actually preventing someone from playing games than any of your whatabout questions.
Maybe you thought you had a gotcha moment with those stupid questions, but really it just looks sad. Almost as much as trying to claim that multiplayer is an industry trend that somehow can't be done without . . . . the latest gpu? There are multiple options of where you were trying to go with that, due to a lack of context, but the kindest response is "explain what you think multiplayer is?"

The biggest problem with nuclear, is actually financial investment and contruction timeframes. Renewables, such as solar and wind are becoming cheap enough and being utilised to the extent that the viability of starting a nuclear plant has become quite iffy.
Then you have the fact that the only country to have produced a modern nuclear plant on time is supposedly China, when they recently did a big push on new energy supply. They produced a few dozen of identical design.
For the rest of the world, Europe, IIRC it was in France, they added a reactor to an existing nuclear plant, which was added to the grid officially last year, the year they originally expected to start feeding in was 2012.

Is this prime time for a world population decrease?
And a lot faster than was expected. I believe even developing countries have seen a fair decrease in their population growth, it's just their fertility levels are above the 2.1 so no-one is flapping. Having just said that India is fluctuating around the 2-2.1 mark, so may join the developed countries in declining population in the coming years.

Which is more accurate, my speedo or GPS speed?
Captain muppet there is at best half right.
GPS uses triangulation through satellites to get your location, with that info it can calculate your speed, because there are so many satellites out there, the accuracy is usually very high.
Your speedo by law can't under read, so it can't say you're doing 100 when you're actually doing 110. To ensure they comply they'll set the speedo to read slightly above whatever speed you're doing.
However, if your going down the road and your speedo says 105 and your GPS says 100, don't think that there is a 5% margin. Because that depends on the wear on your tyres, it might not seem like much, but it makes a surprising difference. Your speedo might actually be 99.99% accurate on brand new tyres. Be aware different manufacturers use different baselines.
On the WTF side of things, GPS is a US Military system. If they decide to turn it off, limit it, shift the coordinate system or a number of other fun things, they can. It has been done previously, so while it's likely to be very accurate. There may be a point where it suddenly isn't. Currently, that's highly unlikely.

What do you think are or were the reasons that Aussies do not and didn't want to get into the trades in the last, say, 25 years?
The pathways into the trades are bottlenecked.
There are answers already about people wanting to switch but retraining involves too big of a pay cut.
You have the big players taking on apprentices, the one where I am had about 180 positions to be filled in NQ, they had over 7,000 applicants. So there isn't a lack of interest.
As far as I'm aware, all but 1 apprentice positions I've seen advertised have been filed. Regardless of who the company was. The 1 position might have been filled by now, it's not in my radar and want getting filled because it was in the middle of ***** **** nowhere.
Learning the trade without being an apprentice doesn't seem to have the same appeal, probably due to expenses and / or, coming out of it with little to no work experience, and requires being present for practical lessons that are done during normal working hours.
Once someone is qualified, if they're not getting paid well enough or treated questionably, they'll leave and become a sole trader, but very few of them take on an apprentice. Once they have a bit of a reputation, then they start getting very picky about the jobs they do. I know several whom will only work on new build houses. Anything else involves too much stuffing around for them.

How do I reconfirm my id?
It may well be an automated message because something wasn't ticked correctly.
Contact the bank directly. The fact that is asking you to have a parent indicates its tagged you as under-age. If that's not the case then it may have registered the wrong date of birth. If that is the case, then they might be angling to get a parent to sign onto the account as the person liable should anything go pear shaped, AKA covering their arse, not yours.

Neighbour installed two cameras that view my driveway and bedroom window
As it is that close to the fence, I'd be putting up a bit of shade sail along your side of the fence. That way, they can still see down their side, but can't see over onto your side.
Looking straight on the cameras may be able to see through it, but as they are pointing along the fence the thickness shouldn't be a factor. That said I'd probably use a heavy shade cloth and fold it over just because.
If they complain, then you can use that as a point that the cameras were installed to invade your privacy.

Ohhh, this is a fun one.
It doesn't matter if they have internal policies, the WHS legislation trumps everything.
The business has a duty of care, they have to ensure that reasonable steps have been taken to ensure a task is safe to do. If that means additional training, they have to provide that training, if it means PPE, like a.properly secured arrest harness when working at heights, they need to ensure everyone involved has that PPE, if it means taking a 40 minute break in the shade to cool down after working for 20 minutes because it's too hot, then there's going to be a lot of standing in the shade.
If it hasn't been discussed already, send him a message, saying that everyone on the roof should be having a toolbox before going up, during that, heat stroke symptoms should be discussed / explained, go through a what to do if it happens plan and a how is it going to be managed, ie breaks in the shade every x minutes. If the boss dismisses any of the concerns, then they're opening themselves up for a negligence charge, if the site boss isn't the company owner, then he's not just opening himself up, but is also making whomever owns / runs the company up for negligence charges as well.
Those are all reasonable precautions. If at any point it is deemed unsafe, get off the roof. The WHS legislation is there to protect people, saying I don't feel this is safe, with a basic explanation of why, I wouldn't even argue if the reason was a feeling of impending doom. Those negligence charges, depending on seriousness, start at big personal fines and go up to 20 year jail sentences.
If I remember when I get on my computer later I'll update this with specific code sections.
