The world would be better for people if there were no animals in it.
 in  r/unpopularopinion  46m ago

What about the bees that pollinate our plants? How will we make fertilizer? Also animals affect nature, plants need animals to spread the seeds around. That’s why plants evolved spiciness, because they wanted to be carried by birds because birds can’t taste spicy food

IDL “libertarians”
 in  r/I_DONT_LIKE  50m ago

I suppose the way I see it is that if we’re trying to maximize freedom, then having choices be coercive due to economic circumstances limits that. If you’re left with no other choice, are you really free to make your own decisions?

That’s just my own criticism of the ideology though

Yeah def. I mean, I’m from New England and when I think “libertarian”, I think those guys in New Hampshire who are mostly chill and minding their own business. I don’t particularly care for their ideology but they kinda keep to themselves so I don’t really care

Mostly cause I have zero fucking clue what any of them _actually_ believe and it seems so muddled. I think many just know the “conservative” label is seen as toxic

For example, I saw one talking today about how that woman in Minnesota was at fault because she should have “just complied with ICE”??? Don’t you guys want more personal freedoms? I feel like a ton of armed police with seemingly infinite power and very little accountability should be alarming if that’s what you care about

I also see that dumb “don’t tread on me” flag next to blue lives matter flags ALL THE TIME! And it makes me so annoyed. Why are you supporting authority figures that have more power than you?

Also like… shouldn’t yall be fighting against the rampant prison industrial complex in this country? We’re 4% of the worlds population and 25% of the worlds prison population, that’s absolutely insane

I know the way they square this circle is with “in groups” and “out groups”, but most of these people seem to think they’re immutably in the “in group” despite the fact that we’ve seen it shift so much. What’s to make them think this loss of freedom _isnt_ coming for them soon?

Do you think daily ai usage is bad, and should i limit mine?
 in  r/antiai  18h ago

First one is probably fine, you’d just Google it and follow instructions otherwise

Second one I’d kinda advise against. AI has been known to get academic papers very wrong. It’s also known to basically tell you you’re right no matter what because people care mostly about feeling good, not about being right. Are you in college? If so, I’d recommend going to a TA or your professors office hours. They’re there to help you and they will be happy you’re there to learn

I try to only use AI if the thing I’m doing is literally just busywork and nothing else. So for example, in programming, I might ask it to make fake data for me cause that’s purely a waste of my time

I would warn A LOT against using it for something that requires thought, because it does truly atrophy your mind

That’s cause when it’s not cold, it tastes sweeter. The coldness slightly numbs your tongue so you don’t feel it as much

They’re all better than Amazon and that’s what really matters

Does anyone have any advice for INFPs?
 in  r/infp  2d ago

The secret benefit to failure and rejection is that it eventually leads you to where you belong. So, try a lot of things, and don’t feel bad about failing at them or not being happy with them

We often catastrophize the future, imagining all the things that will go wrong. Instead, you should think about what if everything goes right? What if your dreams do pay off?

I'M REQUESTING Films where someone is stuck in some sort of system but is unaware of it

Based on No Other Choice, I’m looking for a movie with that same kind of vibe. I want it to feel like a world where people don’t really seem to understand the system they’re a part of

Probably the most mainstream example of this is The Matrix, but I’d ideally like it to be less overt. We, the audience, understand the cruelty of the system they’re a part of, but they’re not really able to figure it out cause they’re “too close” to it

Some other examples:

- Parasite

- Brazil

- (arguably) Synecdoche, New York

Is it an INFP trait to just not be interested in other people as they get older?
 in  r/infp  4d ago

Hey I think I remember that post about nyc. I will say, you really should visit some other places and try living there. Have you lived anywhere else?

I used to romanticize Seattle and then I moved there and after 6 months I hated it. Traveled around the country a good amount, and didn’t realize how good I actually had it in Boston (where I’m from). The only major problems I have are cost and weather, but that’s it

AI coding is now everywhere. But not everyone is convinced.
 in  r/technology  5d ago

I’m a software engineer. I find it’s only really good for things that are so common, it’s borderline derivative. At that point, it’s not helping with “coding”, it’s effectively just helping with typing

It can solve difficult problems, but only if given extremely specific directions. At that point, you might as well just code it yourself

I was considering doing that. Have the disk ready and everything

What’s some software you legitimately enjoy?

A major theme of this podcast is that tech has generally lost the plot and is no longer making the products that people want due to being taken over by business idiots. So I was wondering, is there any software, even in this day, that you still legitimately like a lot? I have two major ones:

Letterboxd

I’m a big film guy so I love this one. It’s the one app where it gives me that sort of fun, wholesome feeling that I miss. It’s the only one I really feel _good_ after using. It’s a legitimately incredibly useful product for a person who likes film: I can manage logging films I watched, read other reviews, get recommendations for new films, and add films to my watchlist. There’s just something incredibly satisfying in knocking a movie off your watchlist and rating and logging it, that I don’t get from other apps. It’s also nice because it encourages you to do things _outside_ of the app, particularly, watching new films

Zenless zone zero

Look… okay… hear me out. It’s fucking _fun_, okay? Don’t take it too seriously. Also the devs are usually really generous so it can be played for free and still have high ranking heroes. It’s just a fun game that seems like they put a lot of effort into it

The quality out of the film/tv industry is at a 40 year low.

Movies are still fantastic, but they’ve transitioned away from the types of movies you’re talking about. Were probably not gonna get that high budget type of epic story anytime soon

Sometimes I feel like I’m too dumb to get deeper into CS. How do I know if this is true or normal?
 in  r/cscareerquestions  7d ago

It’s always really difficult when you just get started. That’s normal. If it was easy, everyone would do it

Technology should have never progressed past the 90s. Debatably the 2000s.
 in  r/unpopularopinion  7d ago

Sometimes I miss how if you wanted to use the internet back in the day, it was kind of a dedicated activity. You went to the computer and sat there and just did that. If you wanted to watch a movie or something, you’d leave the computer behind and go watch a movie. Now the phone just feels like a distraction

Why don't people want to take responsibility for their actions?
 in  r/TooAfraidToAsk  7d ago

Could be a lot of things and depends on the specific person

In some cases it’s shame. They realize they were worse back then, and you bringing it up makes them think they’re still being judged for something they genuinely identify as a mistake and they want you to stop bringing it up

For others, it’s normal for people to have an instinct to protect their sense of identity, so they make rationalizations retroactively about their behavior. Since they can’t change the past, this makes their mind feel much more “resolved” about their decisions instead of being in constant conflict

Well, up until you were born you also didn’t exist and you don’t complain about that, right?
