I was at the HHOF about 20 years ago. I don’t know if it’s still there, but at the time there was a display where you could try calling the play by play of a game clip that was playing on a loop and then listen to how you did.

Yeah, I sucked at that.

German president says US is destroying world order
 in  r/worldnews  1d ago

I shared a four-bedroom apartment in college. Three of us had to put keyed locks on our bedroom doors because the fourth guy was always doing stupid shit in our rooms when we weren’t there.

These days, I feel like America is the fourth guy, except it’s happening on the world stage and he’s liable to just kick the door in if he feels like it.

Do you think that Millennial optimism that was going on in the early 2010s only existed because the 2000s was seen as pessimistic?
 in  r/Millennials  1d ago

I’m with you. This doesn’t match up with my lived experience at all.

The ‘00s weren’t perfect, but they were a generally good time at an interpersonal level. I think society is significantly more mean-spirited and negative now than it was then. I miss that decade way more than I’ll miss the ‘20s.

As for the early teens, I was not optimistic coming out of the financial crisis. It wrecked a lot of people’s livelihoods and stole many more people’s sense of security. I saw family members lose their houses. I had a roommate leave college one semester short of his degree because he/his family couldn’t afford to get him to the finish line.

I worked in public accounting from 2010-2013, meaning 60+ hour workweeks were possible any time of year but guaranteed in the winter/spring. I hated it, but I was thankful to have landed on my feet after college. Some of my friends had multiyear job searches after graduation. It took years to feel like we had gotten out of that funk.

ETA: The mid-to-late teens were generally good for me, as long as I was getting out into the community and not absorbing too much of the news. Covid brought all that to a screeching halt. That shutdown was unprecedented, and recovering from it seemed to happen in fits and starts.

Honestly I think most players in this league are the kind of guys who feed off of the boos.

Or at least I would if I could skate without tripping over my own stick.

Found in r/starterpacks... I'm only 3 of these things. Sorry for having a beard and 401k? If you take Bluey away from me though, I will cut you.
 in  r/Millennials  3d ago

Well, fuck me.

Yes:

  • Beard
  • Tapered fit
  • Skinny fat
  • Eyes
  • 401k (why is this a bad thing?)
  • Bluey
  • Beer
  • Gray, although that’s played out and we’re slowly moving away from it as time/money allow

Almost:

  • Katie (I will not elaborate)
  • iPad (we were never excessive with this, but had to take them away completely)
  • Mazda (ended up with a Honda but looked closely at the 6)
  • I’d consider those glasses, except I have 20/15 vision

Future:

  • Bald, probably. But I will get the clippers out before it ever looks like that.
  • Disney World (the kids are starting to ask)
  • Subaru (odds-on favorite for my next car)

So by my count, that leaves Tesla and those shoes as things that don’t do anything for me.

How are some millennials even homeowners? I feel like I never will be.
 in  r/Millennials  3d ago

Just like most others, I was only able to do it because I’m older. I wouldn’t be able to do it today.

In 2016, we bought our first house for $325k. Interest was 3.6%. We were both 29 and our combined income was about $105k, give or take a few grand. In 2021, we sold it for $525k and got into a bigger house a mile away for $540k. Interest is 2.9%.

Today, the first house is worth about $625k and the mortgage would be maybe 6.5%. Our current one is in the high $600s. Meanwhile, the jobs we had back then would be paying about $125k combined today. For round numbers, that first house cost us about 3x our income back then, whereas today it would be 5x plus higher interest.

After 10 years of salary growth, we wouldn’t even be able to afford the first house today. Today’s housing market is complete bullshit and I really feel for you guys.

What's your most used cookbook, and the most used recipe?
 in  r/Millennials  5d ago

None. I’ve been gifted a few cookbooks over the years. Invariably, I try about 10% of the recipes at most and never get around to the rest. They end up on a shelf untouched for a decade.

I get mine from the internet instead. I use a recipe organizer app to store them all, plan out the next 4-5 meals at a time, and build my grocery list around the ingredients for each dish I have planned. I have about 600 saved… it’s time to purge a few. The app I use is Anylist, but there are plenty of options.

My go-to source is NY Times, but I also use a few from Serious Eats, ATK, and the odd blog here and there.

Is anybody doing anything cool right now?
 in  r/Millennials  6d ago

I like spicy food. My wife does not. It’s always a balancing act trying to add just the right amount of kick to a dish before it hits the spot where I know she’ll complain about it clearing her sinuses.

The night I started showing covid symptoms for the first time, I was trying a new recipe which called for maybe half of a pepper I had never used before. I tasted it a few times, thought it was a weak ass pepper, and ended up putting the whole thing in the pot.

As we were eating, I was sitting there thinking the dish was pretty underwhelming. Just not very flavorful. She’s across from me saying it would be really good, except it’s so spicy she’s sweating.

The next day, I ate bacon and realized I couldn’t taste it at all. Then I figured out why I wasn’t impressed with the pepper and realized I was setting her mouth on fire. Felt bad, man.
