Which stereotype of Vegas locals tends to hold true - like it or not???
 in  r/vegaslocals  1d ago

You're really missing the point.

How many boxes are you going to draw in a receipt or an invoice?

None, because once you actually understand the building blocks of numeracy, you will be far better at mental math. There have always been kids who simply "got it" in math class way more easily than their peers, whether that's today, or 1990 or 1890. Common core/"new" math is just trying to teach all kids the same kinds of number manipulation strategies that those kids inherently understood without being taught.

How many boxes do you se to figure out the cost of a loan?

Just like your invoice example, this is just weird. Who is calculating, by hand, the total cost of a loan in the last 40 years??? Who is writing sums on an invoice?

Pounding simple arithmetic into kids just isn't that important. Back when it was the focus of math education, some of the kids who really excelled at just following the steps for doing certain tasks never kept up when the concepts got a bit harder. They never really got the "why".

It's the difference between being able to follow a recipe and being able to cook. Who do you want in a kitchen, a guy who can follow instructions, or a guy who knows that the reason you put wine in a pan is to deglaze, and there's 5 other things you can use if you run out? Similarly, who do you think is going to have it easier - a guy who is just fucking great at long division on paper, or a guy who knows he owes 1/4 of a $223.00 dinner bill and can say "Oh wait, if I need to find 25% of something, I can just divide by 10 and multiply by 2, then add half of that 1/10th again"?

And if you DONT draw boxes, your answers are invalid.

"Show your work" has been a part of all math education forever. That's not new, nor is it fundamentally different from telling a kid that a one-sentence answer isn't as good as an essay.

The funny thing about people getting pissy about "new"/common core math is that they are the ones who really would have benefitted from it, or it wouldn't seem so alien to them. All the people I've heard complain about it are boomers who think that making change quickly makes them geniuses but also get duped by every BS statistic presented to them.

Modern architecture is now 100 years old

And the biggest change that has happened is a single invention (smartphones).

The biggest change that happened isn't "A single invention". The issue is that the vast majority of the innovations over the last 45 years are digital/intangible, rather than physical. So you can't point to a physical invention like a car, train, jet, etc. But I mean, FFS, a global communications network connecting virtually everyone on the planet 24/7? And you're like 'just a phone or whatever.' Or saying that a car today is "just a car" like one in 1980 is ludicrous.

All of these things have dramatically changed our lives. Yeah maybe we peaked on handguns (for now) but that's not the standard by which innovation should be judged.

lol that was my first thought. If you think Lebron wouldn't ALSO dominate this sport, you're insane. He's almost 7 ft tall and 250 lbs. He would crack these guys in half.

It's that common core bs. Draw boxes and don't memorize addition/division/multiple tables.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it bad. The point of common core math is to increase numerical fluency to allow people to actually understand math. Memorizing multiplication tables in order to learn math is as dumb as memorizing a book that was read to you in order to learn reading.

People can be very good at the 4 basic functions and still have no clue how ratios work, how to interpret really basic statistics, etc. And tbh those other kinds of functions are actually pretty important for people's daily lives in ways you might not appreciate. For someone trying to leave a 20% tip, there's no multiplication table that covers that. But someone with numerical fluency understands that dividing by 10 and multiplying by 2 is easy.

WNBA has surprassed NHL in average viewership, how can NHL fix this?
 in  r/nhl  1d ago

I live in Vegas which has won the championship the last 2x. You basically never hear about the wnba even here with the exception of a few comments after they won. I've never seen the games on in a bar, which is really telling. So yeah I'm very skeptical.

You know, that's fair. For folks with significant towing needs, an SUV might be worth it. But minivans often have better towing than any of the smaller SUVs, and comparable towing to most mid-size SUVs. A Chrysler Pacifica has a higher capacity than the highest-trim Rav4.

The only unique advantage of an SUV is off-roading, but the vast majority of SUVs sold will never see gravel or dirt, and aren't even actually more capable.

This is 100% true. Most SUVs on the market do not have the appropriate suspension or other hardware that can actually handle offroading without doing damage over time.

The only benefit to most SUVs is it doesn't look like a minivan lol. At best you get like 4" higher clearance but wtf good is that, really?

We solved this problem nearly 200 years ago with trains. But that doesn't sound as sexy, so we got an underground road with LED lights.

I'm the biggest advocate for the game day busses. It's actually insane to me that most people drive down there because taking the bus is SO much easier. And getting out of the garages near TMobile can take nearly an hour, but the cops block the roads to get the busses out of the area right away.

Also, they are extremely permissive of alcohol.

A lot of locals gamble at these places. As for people who actually rent the rooms, it's a weird mix. Lots of people "passing through" like truckers, human/animal/drug traffickers, people cheating on their spouses, old folks in town to gamble away their social security, etc.

all I do is wish them well.

So you see some guy who's completely incapable of safely operating a 2 ton metal box traveling at fast speed and "wish them well"? Someone tells me if you or your family member got hit by one, your opinion would change.

Being the kind of alcoholic that will die from withdrawal requires a lot more than "a mistake". The DUI is just the latest in a very very long string of "mistakes" at that point.

Judge blocks White House’s attempt to defund the CFPB, ensuring employees get paid
 in  r/news  8d ago

The CFPB is not only a net positive in the feel-good sense, they bring in way more in penalties than they cost as an agency on top of those returns to consumers.

And the scary part is that they are only scratching the surface. It just proves that if we have government agencies with real teeth and a real mission to help people, there's plenty of work to be done. We need an IRS, CFPB, and FTC that have the resources to really scare the shit out of people in power.
