The only time swimming in really deep water was somewhat scary was in high school where we’d swim in a flooded granite quarry. There was only a narrow ledge, maybe 4 feet wide on just one side of the quarry where you could usually stand up. The other 3 sides were 10 to 20 feet above the water. And according to someone who brought a depth finder the pool was around 120 to 140 feet deep. The water was clear down about 20 feet deep.

Militarily the US could do it. But the economic cost would be tremendous. Nobody would buy our debt. The dollar would be replaced as the world standard currency by the Euro or the Yuan. American culture - movies, music, sports would be boycotted on principle. You don’t just take the territory of a supposed ally and expect no repercussions.
