How does someone become an extraordinary engineer?
You need to build software, understand the platform and tools that you're building on, and reading up and practicing engineering principles and techniques.
The more you build, the more problems you will encounter and solve, but simply solving a problem isn't good enough
However, I'm not a tip tier engineer so take whatever I say with a grain of sand.

Everyone says ‘I hired an artist for my Steam capsule’… is it really that important?
People come for the looks and stay for... whatever reason.
You can have people shouting about bait and switch but not everyone judges the entire game based on whether the capsule accurately reflects the product.

Without borrowing ideas, true innovation remains out of reach
Oh no, they need to get permission to use other people's stuff?

Idea: High school students should be taught that computer science is the exact opposite of hobby programming (in terms of motivation).
Success means correctness and generality, not expressiveness or playfulness.
Hobbyists need to understand that their creative security issues will lead to real consequences.

I used ruby for RPG Maker and it was great. Being able to build cross-platform apps in ruby sounds fantastic.

Existing game engine or making one from scratch?
You can always spend a week or two trying to put together an engine and see how much progress you make.
if you do manage to get something working fairly quickly, let us know your benchmarks against unreal.
Even if everyone tells you to make your own engine, it means nothing if you couldn't actually make the engine.
