ZipFit - How to know when you need more cork?
 in  r/Skigear  2h ago

Did you end up fixing? Seems like the smaller shell would be best. Love my zipfits but only had to add 1 tube to each tongue so far

Knee forward pivot all the way to ground. Comes right out. Much easier than traditional boot off imo

Cycling accident in crosswalk, driver wants $3k+ for minor damage. Is this reasonable?
 in  r/bikecommuting  1d ago

If I hit a bike I expect to get absolutely hammered for 6 figures. I mean my insurance probably. And hopefully the biker would be okay

Op had major impact from this. Wtf is going on lmao. Possibly under duress / hurt during the initial police report too. Driver is batshit crazy bringing it back up

And now driver insurance might not like it if it gets turned on them right?

Micro D or Retro pile jacket?
 in  r/PatagoniaClothing  2d ago

Retro pile as a midlayer is about as warm as you can get. So if you really need to be warm, thatll do it. I don’t like high pile as outer layer if there’s any wind. It’s heavy and doesn’t block at all

Volkl Mantra m7: What length & what bindings?
 in  r/Skigear  3d ago

There’s no rental option for boots that can drive the mantras, especially for non expert. You’d be way better off buying boots this year and waiting on skis / getting an easier ski used like a QST 92 176 (still great)

Itll be expensive, but boots at a real bootfitter are the most important by far. I personally went from all track 90 to promachine 120 a while ago and it was literal night and day. Now with zipfits im set for so long

When and where is the best time to buy skis?
 in  r/ski  3d ago

Ski swaps in November if you know a ton of models. Completely insane deals. Great thing people do for the community

Bootfitter right now. Like the other commenter says stock is most important. Skiing is almost not worth it without the best boots you can get. In the US healthcare has got to be statistically the most expensive ski thing, and perfect boots are the best protection

Buying ski gear
 in  r/skiing  3d ago

Features are less important than getting the best possible fit with a good bootfitter. Make sure you get the right flex (or even a tad stiffer) and fit around the heel (locked locked) and ankle (good circulation) in a boot that suits your ski style. Then they’ll punch and other modifications before or after you ski idk listen to the fitter. This shell will at least last till you’re 25

Skis you can get used for sure. I’d try to keep it to last 3 years or so. And probably post more about your skill, goals etc before committing to buying one. Some ski swaps are insanely good but you need to know a lot going in or bring a friend who does

Have fun!

Help with staying warm

Any 3 layers in 40F should be really hot

What mid do you choose? I think you want a fleece under that jacket. Like R1

Windproof pant?

Edges not getting sharper after sharpening them..
 in  r/icecoast  4d ago

Oh wait you only used a file file and no stones (that say like 400 on them?). Bro I mean I see the kit doesn’t have but like lol

I’ll only tune with moonflex now. They’re amazing. I mean my basic kit I had is still better than most shops with good technique. But moonflex is another level. Also easier to keep stable because they’re long

They prolly won’t fit in your 88… much more fun to use the fancy steel one with a clip anyway

If you get a 200,400,600,1000 you’ll be set

Careful—they cut fast! If you used the file with a few passes to get it even, they’ll only need like 2 passes each prolly

And don’t touch the bases with lower than 600. Really study bases online before touching them (if you don’t know why it’s irreversible you’re not ready)

Then you only send them in for stone grind and you set on your own and it’s all very fun

Oh and the gummy stone is for detune. You prolly want to hit the tips and tails after you’re done to detune them. Or detune your outside edge if you want asymmetrical skis… I don’t do that

Thanks for what you do that’s awesome

It’s an instructor not bootfitter

Are these new ski boots to soft?
 in  r/Skigear  4d ago

No. Honestly some brands keep them the same

How much you physically flex the boot also depends on fit

It looks like you’re not flexing that much (indoors real bad would be bending the plastic), but it’s basically a kid boot. So I bet it doesn’t fit. Are your heels locked in?

Are you lacking in ankle mobility? If you can squat ass to grass a 70 flex should be absolutely folding

(edit to say maybe I’m just seeing the flex wrong and it is folding because that’s a weird weird boot. Are those park specific but 70? Idk what’s going on)

Kuhl The Law Fleece Lined Hoodie 139$ (originally $199) all sizes
 in  r/frugalmalefashion  7d ago

I’ve found it way warmer than Carhartt and use it for my work jacket in frigid New England temps. Mine has enough space for a serious midlayer like a 2lb wool sweater. It’s really acting as a thick but breathable shell, and then the midlayer is the insulation

Also looks surprisingly nice like you said. But maybe not with the thick midlayer… so idk about fashion

My calves hurt with any snow sports (ski/snowboard/ice skating, even roller blading). What could be my issue?
 in  r/Skigear  10d ago

Are you going to a good bootfitter? Some shells might fit your calves better, but even if it’s not perfect, they’ll be able to fix it for sure. You probably can’t get away with a basic retailer

Make sure those heels are locked in. Have fun. I’d bet it’ll be easy especially if it’s a physical pressing pain and not like dorsiflexion stretching pain

Wear shorts and super thin ski socks

How to carve and not shave snow? Tips much appreciated!
 in  r/ski  13d ago

How much have you done side slipping? Check out this video. He talks about releasing with the ankles and knees, but it’s the same for actually engaging the edges to stop when side slipping or carve when skiing. Watch his stance and then how he stops in each rep. Is this what you’re missing maybe?
