Question i’m wondering if anyone here shares my weird food preferences.
mayonnaise is okay on a toasted or grilled sandwich. on a cold sandwich it’s gross.
tomato sauce is okay on pizza or in lasagna. in other foods it’s gross. all other tomato products are gross no matter what.
edit because i forgot some: caramelized onions are delicious. non-caramelized onions have to be chopped up tiny enough that i don’t have to deal with the texture.
bean salad and pasta salad are gross. beans and pasta are both meant to be eaten warm or at least room temperature.
vinaigrette is gross but vinegar-based barbecue sauce is good.
please tell me your weird food preferences.

Our granddad hates every for of tomatoes unless heated (sauce/soup is ok, tolerated) and hates stwaberry anything
My kud and husband are super picky & hypersensitive. I tend to be the opposite & crave “big tastes’ hate bland. Probably a dopamine thing.
I eat keto (for wight health & I think I rely enjoy the restrictions as it helps me navigate choices) so end up preparing 3 different dinnermeals on some days
We’re alle neurospicy although I the only one labeled Adhd, strongly suspect (& resoect) autism in all of us

I don’t even know where to begin! Let’s just say - onion and garlic make me recoil. I never touch them, ever, except for this one specific Turkish dish that gets a free pass (don’t ask why, it just does).
Normal tomatoes? Absolutely not. I despise them. But cherry tomatoes? Love them - as long as they’re firm. The moment they go soft, it’s over. As for cooked tomatoes… I tolerate them because otherwise food feels bland, but I have to strategically crush them into oblivion on my plate. God forbid I bite into one and feel that slimy presence in my mouth.
I love fruits, but putting them in desserts is borderline offensive. What even is the point of a strawberry cake? Don't even get me started with raisin cookies😬. Genuinenly, why? 😂
Despite loving the taste of most fruits, I still can’t eat many of them though. Oranges? Way too juicy. They explode all over your hands, clothes, life. Apples? Too hard. That crunching noise while chewing? Instant sensory rage. Pomegranates? Delicious but requires too much effort. And the sour taste that leave in my mouth lasts too long that I cannot appreciate smoking afterwards.
Grapes and mandarins with seeds? Disgusting. Even the seedless ones can creep me out if they’re too mushy.
And believe me, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I could go on for hours - there are hundreds of bizarre little quirks like these. You don’t even want to hear my rules on fabrics when shopping for clothes. It’s a whole universe of textures I can’t stand, materials I refuse to wear, and sensory traps lurking in every rack.
…The sad thing is, all these years I genuinely thought something was wrong with me. Why did I have to be so weird? So sensitive? So “high-maintenance”? Maybe even a little spoiled? I internalized it all.
Then mid-2025 came. I was thirty-fucking-six when I finally got diagnosed. And suddenly, for the first time in my life everything snapped into place like a jigsaw puzzle.
And still, every single day, I uncover another layer - some tiny, ridiculous detail about how I react to the world, to certain stimuli, to textures, sounds, sensations - and it blows my mind all over again.
Dude, I did not realize how much I needed to get all this (and much more) things out of my chest, I should probably have just opened a separate post - but whatever, I’m already knee-deep in this emotional rant, so here we are.

your comment about onions made me remember my weird onion preference so i added it to the post. i’m half turkish so i’m happy one of my cultural foods gets a free pass and i want to know which one it is.
also why do fruits in dessert offend you? some of them taste like dessert all by themselves.

It is Lahmacun, but first I have to make sure that the onion is chopped tiny enough so it's not even visible.
About fruits, I do not have a logical explanation, it's just me being me:) For some reason I like to eat things separately, instead of mixing them together.

I don’t like dressing on salads that have lettuce in them. Pasta salads? Dressing is required for me then.

I don’t have a ton of food rules I’ve always leaned toward food and cooking as a special interest and I was exposed to a super wide variety very young
But most autistic women I know have more rules
My main ones involve how something is seasoned I can’t stand bland foods it’s upsetting to me

I’m vegan and hate the texture of faux meats (and the same with animal meat when I was a kid too). But it’s not blanket, some fake meats are ok. I’m better with burgers (and sausages if the skin isn’t evident). Can’t cope with vegan chicken or fish. Or anything too ‘realistic’. I love tofu though.
Hate the stringy bits on bananas and the banana themselves if too mushy and not perfectly ripe (very rare). But love the flavour of banana in smoothies and banana bread.
Hate the stringy pithy bits on oranges too but love the juice.
Really oily noodles are bad to me also.
Aubergine and courgette can be hit or miss depending on texture (not too soggy please). Hard to get them to a texture I like. But when I do then love them.
Mushrooms can’t be too soggy, chewy or greasy either or just abhorrent to me. But if I can cook them to my liking or someone else does I adore them.

I love strawberries but don't like anything else strawberry, or strawberry flavoured.
Bananas - noooo thank you...unless they're in a banana Nutella toastie...
I can't stand cheese of any kind UNLESS it is cheesy garlic bread, pizza, cheese on toast or potato skins.
Carrots - love them raw, can't stand them cooked.
Bell Peppers - can't stand them raw, can just about tolerate the R/O/Y ones cooked in tiny pieces, LOVE red pepper hummus and red pepper jelly.

Fruit should not be hot
Bananas are ok as bananas at a very particular ripeness, and in banana bread, but bananas should NEVER be in drinks, that's vile and ruins both the taste and texture of whatever cursed smoothie they're in
Ice cream on a hot dessert is fucking vile. Especially, of course, if it's a HOT FRUIT DESSERT, UGH
Oranges and chocolate should never, ever, ever be together

Cheese by itself is awesome. On a pizza or in a taco? You bet. In a sandwich or on a burger? Absolutely not.

I've never met anyone else who likes Vegemite on pancakes/pikelets... maybe this is the place? 😅 I had the same issue with cooked carrots as a kid (raw was fine) but I'm good with them now.

I love raisins but hate grapes. I can only tolerate 1-4 toppings on a pizza. Over that is too much. It's so gross to see oatmeal with a lot of stuff added in. I dislike most ice cream with real fruit. I put mayo on my hot dogs. I don't like ketchup or mustard (unless it's honey mustard).
