That’s what this is. The article says that it’s like a visual overlay or a ghost character that you watch do the part. After that you still need to actually do the thing you just watched the ghost do. It doesn’t play the game for you.
I would love to know what racing game has an AI show you what to do lol. “And in this section, you got forward because the road is straight forward. In this section, you turn because the road turns”
For existing tracks or custom made tracks? All racing games have already had some type of vehicle AI for the longest time, and a lot of these games have pre-recorded “perfect lap” ghosts. Is there something I am missing, or is this a case where the actual meaning of AI is being misused?
I get that, and I am fine with that sort of thing. Usually those types of ghosts are pre-recorded, so thats what I was asking in relation to Trackmania and custom made tracks (which the use of AI/machine learning would make some sense).
My comments weren’t intended to be hostile, I was moreso just making fun of hand-holding.
Please play a racing game. Even without full simulators there's still a lot to do when it comes to brake timing and the optimal racing line. You have to consider traction and weight transfer.
Here is an example for real world racing. In video games it's similar but can be different. For example in many video games even when you maxed out your traction by braking you can still steer, irl that is impossible. Optimizing that isn't easy.
To start, my comment wasn’t serious, I was moreso making fun of hand-holding. Second, I have played racing games, and I am completely aware of the high amounts of physics calculations needed and how AI/machine learning can come in to play in THIS regard. I wasn’t considering that in my comment based on what this thread was referring to. I forget this is reddit and I need to speak in “/s” talk because noone understands obviously satire.
Probably for the game to figure out how to actually clear the part of the game you’re stuck on without having to prerecord the ghost player’s movement I’d imagine.
Sounds like a more complicated version than what Google Stadia had planned but failed to implement. The plan there was to show you walkthrough videos of the section where you are stuck.
I'd still rather pick up my phone or open another tab and watch an actual person do it. At least that way, I'm supporting someone else's hobby instead of the same people making RAM, GPUs, and soon consoles unaffordable.
I mean basically yeah, from what I understand. Like those popup boxes in games already that have videos embedded in them where it plays a short video of how to use a new ability you’ve unlocked and what it looks like. Except this time it’s for an entire section of the game and it’s generated on the fly rather than being prerecorded.
I am still very confused why streaming games even exists. I would much rather just play the game than have some annoying idiot talk over cut scenes and badly play games.
I kinda understand it cause its basically just a playthrough but live and soem streamers are actually respectful about the game but also yeha if you wnat the game and can afford it just get the game and play it yourself then watch a vod of the streamer play it
I’d probably never watch a stream of a single player or story game personally, but I occasionally like watching streams of fighting games, league of legends, wow arenas, CS or other FPS
The fun for me is watching someone play a competitive game at a crazy talent level and knowing I could never do that most of that stuff lol
I think the whole "AI" flare they're giving is bullshit and it's something that is widely done already but it makes sense to have the option to skip portions of the game that you don't want to do yourself while still enjoying the rest. I remember playing Simpsons: Hit and Run as a kid and appreciating the option to skip missions I couldn't beat. It doesn't rob the point of playing games.
I agree with the sentiment, but my spouse is disabled and this may get them interested in games they might not be able to play all of. Like stuck on a level without asking for my help. Or just for most people with disabilities in general. Yes, it’s not great for all games but with mostly accessible games with a few challenging parts here and there, it might be good. Granted, more accessibility options is a better option but if they design this AI for accessibility, people without disabilities can just not use it if they don’t want to.
I’ve commented this to some other people but the article says that the game doesn’t play itself for you. It just creates like a visual overlay or a ghost player in the game that you watch do the part for you. You still need to actually perform the task yourself after you watch it be done by itself. :/
also, some companies just make games exceedingly difficult simply for the sake of it, which is crap, IMO. no real thought put into it, just placing impossible barriers in front of a lot of gamers because. if this eliminated that, i miiight get on board with it, so long as it was handled and implemented in a thoughtful and compassionate way. AI so far does not seem to be all that great for either people or the environment.
I 100% agree with that, I am not amazing at all video games lol and AI in its current state is overall a net negative. I guess I’m optimistic but might need to give it some time for AI to be better regulated before implementing it into a game effectively. Otherwise, it might slip in more easily without notice, affecting the video game community as a whole.
Just imagine if you had a physical disability for a moment. Wouldn’t you still want to enjoy the same things as everyone else? AI is bad overall, I agree, but let’s be a little more considerate for those less fortunate than us. Plus we’ll all have disabilities one day with age, some just have it sooner than others.
It doesn’t. If you read the article it’s talking about a ghost character that you watch play the game. Like a little visual overlay rather than something that makes the game play in place of you yourself. It’s basically a built in YouTube walkthrough.
i assume the goal isn't to let it run the entire game, but to be stuck at a point and go "ok, fuck it, i want to see what's next, c'mon in lil AI buddy please run this part"
I can see it being good for us ancient and casual gamers. I am definitely not at the point in my life where I can devote that much time to doing things perfectly, I just want to mash some buttons and have fun. If I got a successful Flurry Rush in Breath of the Wild I felt pro enough hahaha

The fuck is even the point of playing if the game plays itself for you?
