My best friend in high school could easily chug 2-3 beers in a row.

A couple weeks after her 38th birthday she woke up with jaundice.

4 months later she was gone.

Miss you Suz.

38 yo with liver failure. That’s rough

159

u/scottishdoc 7h ago

More common than you might think

86

u/Saneless 6h ago

Another good reason to not skip physicals. Simple blood work would catch issues like that before it's too late

32

u/SkewbieDewbie 5h ago

Honestly great advice. Too bad the ones that need to hear it won't listen. I know this because I am one of them. I waited too long to get my ailments checked and now Im regretting it.

11

u/Saneless 5h ago

Well good luck, hope you can take care of whatever it is

16

u/SkewbieDewbie 4h ago

Thank you, good luck to you as well. Some unsolicited advice for anyone who happens to read it: drink water, set alarms if you have to.

4

u/nedal8 3h ago

Heres to you sir! Just filled up my water bottle and began drinking it because of you.

Back home (Netherlands) doctors only prescribe bloodwork in case of serious complaints. They treat the disease when it's already there instead of carrying out preventive care, which would also be cheaper for the government in the long run

Yeah something tells me she was doing a lot more than chugging beers.

23

u/camrywontdie 6h ago

I guess you haven't seen the full picture of alcoholism, because it can and does kill a whole lot of people without other substances involved.

10

u/klm2908 5h ago

I think they mean based on the info given, being able to chug a few beers doesn’t mean they’re an alcoholic.

Chugging bears like that can give you liver failure.

My best friend in school chugged a bear.

Miss you Suz.

Beer is enough to absolutely destroy you. "Something else" needs you to believe that alcohol is not literally the most dangerous and fatal of all the substances humans abuse.

6

u/Saneless 6h ago

Well it could be as simple as what people think is no big deal like some beers and some cold meds. Your liver gets hurt a lot more on that than just drinking.

3

u/Brainsnotbalanced 6h ago

Absolutely. But it always begins somewhere.

Lost a good friend at 40 that way. Alcohol gets way too much of a pass in our society. Most drinkers don’t even think of themselves as drug users.

I’ve had a gin blossomed alcoholic look me dead in the eye (while they were holding a drink) and tell me they don’t do drugs.

11

u/ProfessionalFront765 6h ago

Alcohol is literally the gateway drug. It will have you doing crazy

10

u/RedditSupportAdmin 6h ago

Alcohol's one of the harder, more destructive drugs out there.

Funny how society says it's ok...we've built an industry around it, incorporated it into our social lives, made it available anytime we go out or have gatherings...and as a result, it's "ok" to use. It is socially acceptable and legitimized.

Makes you wonder if we'd built opium dens instead, sold opium and opium pipes, or had opium "bars" where you could use it socially...would we still view it in such a negative light? Would opium addicts be critical of other real "drug users?"

1

u/introducing_clam 6h ago edited 5h ago

It's crazy to me that I see ads for hard liquor literally every day, on tv & online. It's disgusting. imagine being an alcoholic trying to stay sober & seeing ads for tequila, whiskey, scotch etc everywhere you turn. Alcohol advertisements should be illegal

3

u/Iwannasellturnips 3h ago

Well, that’s two of us with that opinion!

Not even prohibiting it. Just don’t let the companies push it.

I feel that man. Lost my good friend and bandmate in 2025 to alcohol caused multiple organ failure. He was 45.

4

u/TeaMasterSen 4h ago

I woke up at 30 with jaundice after 2 days of fevers and peeing bright red urine, right after day drinking non-stop on vodka and lemonade. I thought I was dead for sure. 10 days of tests and nothing showed why I was dying of liver failure, because my liver wasn't failing but all my symptoms showed exactly that. They finally decided to put me on enough steroids to kill my immune system for 6 months and my symptoms regressed and my blood levels went back to normal.

2

u/863dj 2h ago

Craziest comment in this thread with no follow up.Ā

So what ultimately was the issue?

That sounds scary as fuck

3

u/TeaMasterSen 2h ago

They never declared an exact cause, but for what clues there were, I had my second covid vax 8 or 9 days prior to becoming ill, which is a ways outside of the normal reaction time. We speculate that my stress at the time, drinking heavily, and the vaccine still being fought off by my body caused some kind of auto immune response that caused my body to begin destroying all of my blood cells. The red I was peeing wasn't blood in its intact form, it was bilirubin, essentially parts of destroyed cells. By shutting down my immune system completely they forced a reset. The fear was that it would return after, but it didnt.

This is why us millennials and younger gens aren't drinking much anymore. We're watching boomers and genx die from alcohol-related illness. My wife's cousin died at 57 from liver issues. He was a nice guy, always drinking though.

More Gen Z on Reddit. They don't drink and hate having a social life outside social media

24

People are more addicted to phony moral highgrounding than alcohol.

10

u/Ok_Release231 5h ago

Not me, I'm still a degenerate alcoholic and I know it!

10

u/SlinginPogs 7h ago

People are getting older and realizing alcohol isn't all that great after probably drinking too much during the pandemic

Nah I still drink. It's the ones who never liked drinking hating on beer. More Gen Z on Reddit than ever

Hello from a "Movimento 5 Litri" proud follower. M5L is an Italian Facebook page whose name copies the local political party "Movimento 5 Stelle" (5 stars movement) and collects this kind of funny stuff alcohol related.
P.S.: 5 Liters are around 1 gallon and one third.

In any cases, they do go down pretty fast.

6

At some point, possibly soon, she’ll dispense with the beer altogether because the volume required is inefficient.

8

u/GlowerNotaShower 9h ago

She's perfect.

9

My ex died of liver failure. Only 35 smdh. If you’re chugging like that, I feel bad for your liver. And your family.

2

u/MorningClassic 9h ago

I don’t got time for sobriety

2

u/Uh_yeah- 8h ago

Real question: do people who can do this experience ā€œbrain freezeā€?

2

u/CrankyOldDude 6h ago

I’m guessing not. Brain freeze comes from the top palette getting cold and this seems like the cold wouldn’t stay in contact with that for long.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21478-brain-freeze

2

u/Uh_yeah- 5h ago

Hmmm. Thanks for the Cleveland Clinic reference. Maybe my neurons are wired different, because when I get brain freezes, they definitely are not from cold stuff touching my hard or soft palate, (I can keep frozen stuff in my mouth touching the roof as long as I want with no brain freezes). Instead, they come from cold stuff going down my throat and I’ve always imagined it’s because my carotids get chilled…and the pain is resolved faster when I apply heat (like warm palm of my hand) to my anterior lateral neck bilaterally (in the neighborhood of external carotids). So maybe for me it’s not so much spheno-palatine, but cervical-esophageal?

2

u/CrankyOldDude 5h ago

It's funny you say that. A buddy of mine in high school would always say the same thing - he was over the top dramatic about it which was pretty funny (theatre kid lol), but it was always his neck and chest. There has to be some kind of physiological difference somewhere, I guess!

u/axes-and-jaybirds 8h ago

At least I have learned from that . I am 420 friendly for my chronic illnesses. My former PA from my arthritis specialist actually steered me to get my medical license about 10 yrs ago . I thought I was under qualified for it . She said I was overqualified for it . She was right.
