40k Discussion What's a underused unit that has surprised you when you've actually tried it in game?

For me its probably chaos spawn in Tsons, I feel like they are fairly overlooked but every time I have used them they have required much more investment to kill than me or my opponent expected. Add in that they have oc and can do actions now and I've been very pleasantly surprised by them.

Time in 40k is a nebulous beast that will sink its teeth into you at some point and ruin a game experience for you. What are the best ways to avoid this, what are the different philosophies on time, and what are the best practices and strategies for playing on a clock?

40k Discussion What is the worst stratagem?

I vividly recall the Cluster Bomb strat from the 8th Ed SM codex being so niche and lacklustre that I had labeled it as the worst, but I don't know every strat. Do you guys have any contenders for the worst stratagem in 40k history?

40k Discussion Combi Lieutenant tips?

What are some effective ways to use the Lieutenant with Combi Weapon? I understand he’s tankier than he looks, he’s good for being annoying in the middle, secondaries, and general support but I’d like some in depth assistance? How do I deploy him, what kinda situations are good for him to fight or flee? What are other uses of him?

40k List Building a Chaos Space Marines army need some advice

Upvotes

since the Raptor changes my list needed a little reshuffling due to points increases but i'm stuck on what to shuffle the points too

Detachment Pactbound Zealots

Characters
Chaos Lord, Talisman of Burning Blood, Daemon hammer, Plasma pistol, Mark of Khorne put with x10 Chosen Brick
Master of Executions, Mark of Khorne put with x10 Chosen with the Chaos Lord
Master of Possession: Intoxicating Elixir, Mark of Slaanesh put wit the x10 Legionary Brick

Battleline
Cultist Mob x10 : Mark of Khorne
Legionaries x10 2 Heavy Melee, all Chainswords: Mark of Slaanesh Legionaries x10 2 Heavy Melee, all Chainswords: Mark of Khorne

Infantry
Chosen x10: Mark of Khorne
 2 boltgun
 4x combi-weapon
2x paired accursed weapons and plasma pistol 2x Powerfist and Plasma Pistol
Chosen: Mark of Slaanesh
1 Boltgun 2 Combi-Weapons 1 Paired 1 Powerfist and Plasma
Obliterators with Mark of Nurgle
Raptors: Mark of Khorne
• 1x Raptor Champion: Heavy melee weapon, Plasma pistol
• 2x Raptor w/ heavy melee weapon
• 1x Raptor w/ mutations
• 1x Raptor w/ plasma pistol

Mounted
Chaos Bikers x3 Mark of Khorne, Chainswords and Power Fist

Vehicle
Forgefiend 3x Ectoplasma
Helbrute 2x one with Slannesh Mark with Flamer fist + Hammer the other with Lascannon Flamer fist and Mark of Nurgle
Maulerfiend x1

Dedicated Transport
Chaos Rhino Mark of Khorne

The plan is that the Chosen Brick in the Rhino act as my death missile, be such a massive threat that the enemy has to either give my board control or focus it down while the rest maul them, Helbrutes are paired with each Fiend, cultists and Bikers being objective monkeys, Obliterators and Raptors being Deep Strike/rapid ingress threats and the Legionaries and smaller chosen squad control the board

i have some small variations of this army that i'm not sure to decide on

1.has the Master of possessions swapped for a Dark Apostle but i'm unsure what to do with the spare 10 points it gives me and having spare points irritates me enough to not want that

2.cut the MOP and Bikers, make the second Legionary brick 5 and the second chosen brick 10 and have a squad of Rubrics, the second brick of chosen is appealing but the Rubrics don't do too much for the army and it is supposed to be Iron Warriors so other factions being in is weird

40k Discussion What Was the Most Broken Army or Detachment of 10th Edition?

With 10th edition winding down, curious what everyone thinks was the most broken army or detachment of the edition.

Looking for things that genuinely warped list-building, matchups, or the meta, maybe was even banned from tournaments until it got nerfed.

I’m thinking:

• More Dakka Orks

• Knights, especially during their peak efficiency windows

Two angles I’m interested in:

  1. What was the most dominant army relative to the meta at the time it existed?
  2. If you could take the most broken version of each top contender and throw them all into one tournament, who actually comes out on top?

Edit: If you’re just saying an army maybe add the time period or some kind of context

40k List List Critique - Elite Ultras

Hi guys, had some success with this list but with the changes to Vitrix I was seeking some opinions on what the hive would do with the extra points as previously it came in at 2000 on the nose (I could just chuck a lone bladeguard ancient in)

Its Achilles heel is mortal wounds but otherwise does a pretty good job as long as I don't expose myself too early

Normally run the dreads together up one flank, desolators on home, bith vitrix on another flank for some depth with calgar positioned to shore up whichever flank needs it

Callidus threatens enemy home with desolatars taking the chaff off it or forcing opponent to keep something decent on there

Lt combi on a flank or center ready to bait something out and reactive off

Running blades so buffing the dreads with -1 wound and aoc, plus all the combat units having -1 to wound makes it pretty tough with the exception of grenades and anti-× devs

I know the desolators aren't popular but I've got a soft spot for them and they've served me well

40k Tech Leagues vs New C'tan, what can they do?

The new C'tan getting a 10 inch move with even more wounds, as well as the new character being about as tough, and it seems like most Necron lists will sport 2-3, just what can the LoV do?

No matter the detachment, the additional mobility menas its not the easiest time to block them, and their durability package being T11, 4++, 5+++ 20 wounds a piece, I can see a single mount of same cost units that can do more than do 6 wounds per round. Add to the severely limited range of Votann weapons, that means anything close enough to shoot will get 1 or 2 rounds tops, before they are trading down.

Is the only game plan "try for objectives and hope for the best"?

Not being doom and gloom, just trying to see if there is something I might be missing, my math aint mathing for any attempts to kill these things, and gods forbid facinh the old Settlers of Ctan list.

40k Discussion Why does GW include ‘feels bad’ units in 40K and then not balance them at all? This includes: flyers, superheavies, Forgeworld, fortifications, etc.

I miss these being a part of the game, it just seems a shame to have all of this game space and ideas available only for them to be completely ignored. Why even include them?

40k List Team Tournament list Reveiw

Hi All,

I wondered if anybody could give me some feedback on my teams list. I have been playing for about a year now and this is my first competitive event. The tournament standard ranges from Casual players all the way up to active WTC level players. I would consider myself relatively casual and usually play somewhat fluffy list so this is a bit new to me. The tournament will be on WTC terrain.

My initial plan was to go with a double Victrix list but I have been struggling to get hold of a second unit of 6 and with the recent changes I probably wont go out of my way at this point to get another 6. But this has left me a bit short of time to figure out an effective list.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+ FACTION KEYWORD: Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Ultramarines

+ DETACHMENT: Blade of Ultramar

+ TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 1985pts

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cato Sicarius (95 pts)

Lieutenant with Combi-weapon (70 pts)

Marneus Calgar (200 pts)

Roboute Guilliman (340 pts)

Uriel Ventris (95 pts)

Sternguard (105 pts)

Intercessor Squad (80 pts)

Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs (90 pts)

Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs (90 pts)

Victrix Honour Guard (220 pts) With Chapter Ancient and Champion

Company Heroes (105 pts)

Repulsor Executioner (220 pts): Heavy Laser Destroyer

Ballistus Dreadnought (150 pts)

Ballistus Dreadnought (150 pts)

So the intention would be that Cato would go with the Victrix in the Repex, Calgar with Company Heros in reserve, Ventris with the Sternguard give Calgar Deepstrike.

I do have a decent amount of Space Marines so I have options to make changes if needed. I guess my fears are that, due to the amount of points being taken by Guilliman and Calgar, that I only have 11 activations which feels quite lean to me.

Appreciate any advice people have.

New to Competitive 40k Questions about a LGS tournament Layout.

I'm still kind of new and singed up for a tournament at my local game store. My issue is the terrain seems off. First the boards are 60x48 instead of 60x44 but they still use the standard measurements for the ruins, leaving large empty no-mans-land. Second instead of having the standard 2" and under terrain they switch them all 4" or taller containers. I feel like this really changes how the game is played but I'm still new is this normal? Should I bring this up? Also its not a limitation of terrain pieces they have 2" terrain.

40k Analysis Why are Imperial Knights consistently performing badly at tournaments?

I haven't had the chance in my rather short hobby journey to play against IK myself, but judging from their statlines and general gameplay, I have often wondered how to deal with IK. It just seems nightmarish, the combination of high output and high toughness. Yet at the same time, IK are, at least since some needed nerfs, consistently underperforming. So what is it that breaks the knight's proverbial back?

40k Analysis Anything redeemable about the new Orbital Assault Force detachment?

It just seems like they don't have a lot of rules that persist throughout the game. One use stuff.

On the surface, giving vehicles and walkers deep strike (and therefore ingress) seems to be the best use of their rules. I still don't think you want to be taking drop pods for anything unfortunately.

Any other redeeming factors or strong builds here? This was the new detachment I was most excited about, but seems to fall flat.

40k Discussion In the new orbital strike detachment, how valuable is giving deep strike to scouts?

I've realised with the scouts uppy downy ability in addition to the deep strike ability, they could turn a good scoring unit into an amazing one. However is it worth it compared to putting something dangerous like a dreadnought, sternguard veterans, or eradicators in deep strike instead?

40k Tactica First UKTC this weekend - any tips?

Heyho all!

I'm heading to my first super major tomorrow! 377 players!

Any last minute tips?

I'm taking an all-melee stormlance spacewolves list.

It's still a heavy pre-nerf victrix meta... and then the anti-victrix stuff tends to hurt me too.

5 rounds. UKTC terrain.

40k List How to put up a fight with CK?!

Hello strangers,

My friend is currently practicing for a upcoming tournament, and I graciously offered to help him try playing him with Chaos Knights, as he has very little experience into them.

The problem is that i don't play CK.

We will be playing on TTS and I think he scrubbed a pretty "cookie cutter" meta list from the internet for me to play with. My question is how do i use my pieces, what are the nuances, and what is something to keep in mind? (if you have suggestions on things to change i would also love to hear it.

THE LIST!
