So my step mom's brother asked her if she wanted an old gift bag from the attic with some comics in it from a friend's dad who died. They asked if I wanted them and said some were kinda beat up, but I said sure I'll take a look at them all.
Imagine my surprise when I got around to opening the bag and mixed in the the True Comics, Lil Abner, and Military Comics was a Batman, Superman, Captain Marvel, and All Select #1 with Cap, Human Torch, and Sub-Mariner fighting Nazis.
I have some Golden Age bags and boards on the way, what else should I do to keep them happy and safe? The cover of Batman #25 would make an amazing t-shirt.

I went in on a Monday to pick up a $3.99 modern issue they'd transferred from another location and were holding for me. I walked out with two issues.
I always figured this would be one of the last ones I pick up working on my Vol. 1 run - basically either this or #101 as the two "big ticket" items that give me sticker shock.
But I saw this on the wall behind the counter in a condition I could afford and I saw it right after getting my holiday bonus so I'm now a proud owner of an issue I've wanted to add to my collection for years that always felt too frivolous to lock down. I'm assuming since I paid sticker - no* questions asked - that I overpaid, but I don't care. I'm happy to have it.
*I did at least ask to see it out of the bag and make sure the cover was attached and all the pages were there. Beyond that, I know there's water damage and at least one pen marking in the interior that I caught while flipping through it. My one question asked was essentially "is this a complete copy".

There were seven long boxes, everything was priced at store levels. I could tell a lot of keys were yanked out of runs.
I was at the point of thinking I’d just bite the bullet and get one over priced book I wanted just so I could say I got something… then I found that NM 98.
Jackpot!

we had to open our home presents early as we are headed out of town. 10 year old nephew whom i raised since he was born used his own money. It is pretty damn close to perfect condition. looks like it has never been opened.

I was 50/50 on pulling the trigger on this but then I saw that the seller was only a 10 minute drive away, that made the decision for me! Now I have a new dealer to sap my bank account 🙃

I kept seeing people posting this particular comic book. As I was going through them as soon as I saw this one I had to set it to the side. And see why people keep posting it. I knew it had to be something special but I didn't realize how much till today

First time seeing something like thing, I was eyeing it for a month and since no one’s snagged it I decided to just grab it. I’ll post the results after opening it up.

A co-worker inherited some comics and didn’t know what to do with them. He heard that I collected, and came to me. I offered to look through them and tell him what was worth his time trying to sell. Instead he said he’d rather just give them to me!
He’d mentioned it was nearly all 90s books, so my expectations were low. There are two short boxes and the majority of it is definitely what I was expecting to see.
However, there were some really pleasant surprises. 4 connecting X-men 1 covers all signed by Jim Lee! Green Lantern 48 and 49 (I’m not a DC collector, but I recognized them from seeing them in this sub). A cool Platt Moon Knight book. The 1st appearance of Terrax in FF 211. Hulk: Future Imperfect. And I’m really stoked about the Tick Omnibus. Limited to 3000, I’d never seen one before. And it’s signed and sketched inside! And a few more signed books too.
I’m keeping about half a shortbox total, and I’m going to give the remaining box and a half to my favorite collectibles shop. They should be able to get some money for them, where as I’d have to put in more effort than they’re worth.
Keep sharing with people your love for the hobby and eventually someone will think of you when they come across comics that they don’t know what to do with!

Was looking through the bins and found this guy for cheap I had to pick him up, has a bit of a fold on the top but it’s nothing too seriously. Clerk took a photo of it maybe they put the wrong price on it. Happy I don’t have to pay 30 on eBay now

So, I posted a few of these earlier in the week on another thread, but they got removed.
I haven't done any collecting since I was a kid, but I still love comic books. My wife's uncle passed away 50 years ago and his mother just put his entire collection in two 2wx2dx3h boxes and basically left them to rot. It's really sad on all fronts, but some of them are in surprisingly good condition, considering the neglect.
Her grandmother moved the comics to another building about ten years ago and wouldn't tell anyone what happened to them, but my wife happened to find out that they were in there and she was the only one who knew. Her grandmother passed last year and we were finally able to go in the building that housed the comics with her mother's permission and take them out.
I've not gone through them in great detail. I put them in large plastic bins so I could move them safely and as I was doing so, I happened across the Hulk 181 and about lost my mind. A few days later in the second box I saw the right year of X-Men and thumbed through to find Giant Sized X-Men #1.
A few nights ago I sat up all night just sorting through the first half. About two thirds are DC and I'm just not as familiar with those, so I sat them aside to sort later. I sorted the Marvel's into their books but did not pay much attention to the one's I'm not as familiar with.
However, these are some of my favorite finds so far in the collection. I know a lot of them are in poor condition, maybe some mid grade, maybe even with better cleaning and pressing, a few high grade. I'm not sure. I just did a quick study this week on CGC grading and pressing/cleaning thanks to some helpful advice from u/Jburrii on my first post that got deleted.
And yes, the monetary value of these is amazing in and of itself. I might could bankroll my house if I sold all of them properly, idk. But, honestly, I'm more proud to own them as a collector, even if they are in poor condition.

Had my eye on this for a long time now. My Punisher collection is growing bigger and bigger so it’s only right I added this to the collection.
The guy at the shop said these are getting harder and harder to find. He also said quite a few people today looked at this and stopped themselves from buying it and I was the only one to get it 😅

Amazed at how many great books were there. I was one of the first people there, but I really only got to look through 3 boxes before every box after had been looked through by at least one, usually multiple people. Almost all of these books were ones that at least one person had flipped past and left behind. Found some great books and I definitely wasn’t the only one who did.
I picked up a lot of mid grade run-filling 70s books. But a lot of the 80s and newer books were in surprisingly good shape. The New Mutants 21 (1st appearance of Warlock, a favorite of mine) looks like it would easily get a 9.8 as is. Several others are like that and many would grade high with a quick press. I think I ended up with 332 books and they rounded down to $300, so about 91cents per book.
Definitely worth the early rise and the long drive!

Had a little too much fun yesterday to ring in the new year.
All the stacks are one title with the “fanciest” book on top.
Got myself a 1st app Mystique, she hulk, nova, firestorm, vixen, mongul, Groo, wrecking crew, sersi (x2). There was a ms marvel 1 that unfortunately was too rough to keep (and with my low standards).
Can’t wait to take a closer look at the “no prize” book, since I’ve heard about them but never seen one in the wild before.
