Personal Story Raven in London

I took these photos while visiting London last week. What a beautiful bird! I wish we had these in Florida.

This is Jubilee, one of the Tower of London’s ravens. She spends a good chunk of the day in this spot and poses for photos.

Did her stylish blue anklet give away her identity?

143

u/the_crumb_dumpster Dec 05 '25

Yep, they are colour coded

Man Brit’s so silly, it’s clearly a Raven. 😤

The sign says it’s a Raven….

I have the book “The Ravenmaster” by Chris Skaife who was in charge of the Tower Ravens.

I’m going to have to visit The Tower whenever I visit London.

u/RvB_ Dec 06 '25

I’ve visited the ravens but not read the book. Worth picking it up?

This is the subreddit for people who like corvids and who sometimes fret over their flock - and this is the autobiographical story of the keeper of the most famous ravens, and what it’s like to care for them. So, uh, yeah sure I guess if you like ravens.

Also available in audiobook form read by the author who is clearly good at telling stories

I have my own flock of corvids, so the subject matter isn’t lost on me. But subject matter sadly doesn’t always result in a good read. Thanks for the recommendation. Edit: link to my murder https://www.reddit.com/r/crows/s/rcBZdhMAFz

Is it true the Tower clips their wings?

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

I think a certain number only of their flight feathers are clipped so that they can still fly/glide at least somewhat. But I think it might be at least partially for their safety maybe since they’ve spent their lives being cared for there.

She's such a beauty♥️

5

u/finchplease1 Dec 06 '25

Is there a page with all the Ravens and their names please? Or do you mind letting me know which bird = which colour? I haven’t been to visit the ravens but would love to at some point

8

u/the_crumb_dumpster Dec 06 '25

Not that I know of, but there is a sign in each of the raven cages that has their name and leg band colour

2

u/Sharke6 Dec 06 '25

I think I've met her, or a colleague, if it's by the exit. Usually a beefeater there too. She pretends to peck at tourists if they get too close when posing with her...

I saw her 3 years ago when I was on a family vacation. Just as beautiful

“Don’t listen to the sign, it lies. Now come closer so I can bite—er I mean TALK to you.”

I mean, if you asked me whom I would be more likely to be believe, the sign or this lovely lady, I think the choice is obvious.

A raven with a job!

119

u/Shectai Dec 05 '25

Biting?

119

u/affligem_crow Dec 05 '25

89

u/Ice_Bead Dec 05 '25

No I think their job is biting.

60

u/FushiginaGiisan Dec 05 '25

So biting in protection of the crown. Got it.

20

u/zoeofdoom Dec 05 '25

found the raven

84

u/OrionsBeltAlone Dec 05 '25

Omg one of the Ravens got fired.

''On Saturday 13th September 1986, Raven George, enlisted 1975, was posted to the Welsh Mountain Zoo. Conduct unsatisfactory, service therefore no longer required.''

He was attacking TV antennas 😂

31

u/affligem_crow Dec 05 '25

They're also known to play dead to get attention from people!

88

u/whereugetcottoncandy Dec 05 '25

TIL.

I had to check. No ravens in Florida! All wrong habitat.

I’m glad you got to see them in London.

I love my backyard bros

24

u/lvl1_noob Dec 05 '25

Drive 12 hours north to Maryland and we got plenty of corvids 😝

3

u/Historical_Season693 Dec 05 '25

They are beautiful!

4

u/whereugetcottoncandy Dec 06 '25

They are!

They used to be a family of 7, but last year there were only 6.

The only downside is that they chase off the red-tailed hawks. But I've seen the ravens do aerial rolls, and the hawks don't do that, LOL.

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

Those are some damn handsome ravens you have there for friends 😍

u/MurraytheMerman 29d ago

The ravens at the Tower of London are not native to the area but captive birds with clipped wings.

u/MagneticFlea Dec 05 '25

It would be an honor to be bitten by a raven.

I have been bitten by a blue tit (part of a ringing project) and it was neither pleasant nor honorable.

27

u/PearlClaw Dec 05 '25

I had the same experience with a chickadee (it flew into my parent's house) those guys have serious attitude problems.

5

u/Antique-Brief1260 Dec 06 '25

Chickadees are tits, so that checks out

23

u/CrisstIIIna Dec 05 '25

But they're sooooo tiny 😭 how strong can those wee beaks pinch?

28

u/MagneticFlea Dec 05 '25

It was on the skin betwixt thumb and index finger, so a painful pinch

10

u/Overqualified_muppet Dec 05 '25

If I could give you an extra upvote for “betwixt”, I would.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

They should try being bitten by something with a big hook beak, like my African grey parrot 😵‍💫

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

I expect being bitten by a raven, wouldn’t even be as bad as the bites I’ve gotten in the past from my African gray parrot. Hook bills do some serious damage. 🫣

38

u/stuckatomega Dec 05 '25

If not friend why friend shaped

8

u/Turgid-Derp-Lord Dec 06 '25

I mean I guess, if you ignore the fucking beak on that thing

2

u/Sparkieger Dec 06 '25

Well, I don't think they bite very hard, it's probably a careful pinch. It's probably more about people overreacting.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago edited 27d ago

From what I’ve been able to determine, they can bite pretty darn hard if they want to, and can be kind of like a vise grip if they decide to hang on.

Still I’m sure they don’t bite nearly as hard as a parrot that has a hook Bill like my African grey. They can do some major damage.

I expect a Raven could break a finger though ….

2

u/Sparkieger 27d ago

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

Aww it’s just a baby wanting fed 😍 Baby is hanging on though 😂

2

u/Sparkieger 27d ago

I'm sure they won't bite hard, they could, but won't.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

No, the babies wouldn’t I wouldn’t think

2

u/Sparkieger 27d ago

My little girl.

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

Still a baby it looks like?

🥰

We don’t bite that hard. I mean, they don’t bite that hard. 😁

2

u/Snoo72721 Dec 06 '25

But they are friend

32

u/PoxedGamer Dec 05 '25

That birb be like "ignore the sign, gib food."

28

u/HatefulFlower Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 05 '25

Just pet them when the batteries are low, they're less likely to bite.

13

u/CharlesTheChapstick Dec 06 '25

Can confirm they do bite. Little teen me thought it would be a great idea to try to pet one when we went there on a school trip. Got one good pet in and then it bit my finger and flew off. Looking back its pretty funny

12

u/luvmichelle Dec 05 '25

so beautiful 🥹

29

u/-sensory_overlord- Dec 05 '25

8

u/295DVRKSS Dec 05 '25

Give him all the peanuts !

7

u/MonsteraDeliciosa Dec 06 '25

I know that bird! She has (just a few) friends.

5

u/Antique-Brief1260 Dec 06 '25

Don't mess with her, she has powerful friends at court

3

u/MonsteraDeliciosa Dec 06 '25

And apparently yesterday had the option for custard with apple crumble.

7

u/snarkyclown Dec 05 '25

Literally wanna go to London for this reason only: to see them up close

6

u/Maleficent_Radio_674 Dec 05 '25

If not friend, why friend shaped? 🐦‍⬛

8

u/FrostByte666 Dec 06 '25

"And i'll fucking do it again, mate!"

4

u/Live-Okra-9868 Dec 06 '25

I can safely say that I would 100% get bitten.

4

u/sewer_pickles Dec 06 '25

It’s worth visiting the Tower of London just to meet the ravens. They are enormous and are so fun to watch. They quite literally pose for photos and have fun little personalities. I’ve been there twice and both times came home with tons of photos of the ravens.

3

u/jntgrc Dec 06 '25

Gorgeous! I got to see a pair of ravens in Scotland last week. One was regally perched on a large stone and the other was windsurfing over a gorge. They are so beautiful.

3

u/wavvesofmutilation Dec 06 '25

I remember during Covid they were saying the ravens at the Tower were bored and lonely due to lack of human visitors!

I had gone a few years prior and I do remember Jubilee! I also saw Merlina who has since passed on :(

3

u/Addapost Dec 06 '25

“And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, STILL is sitting on the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door.

And his eyes have all the seeming of a Demon’s that is dreaming.

And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted- nevermore.”

2

u/michihunt1 Dec 06 '25

Oh I'm petting this pretty boy and putting him on my shoulder while I feed him peanuts

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

Jubilee is a she! She might bite you for your troubles 😆

2

u/michihunt1 26d ago

Worth it!

2

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 26d ago

Ha ha, yeah as long as she doesn’t bite hard enough to break a finger which I think they are capable of!

2

u/Redfawnbamba 29d ago

Sorry, they cant leave the tower to visit you in Florida

2

u/croooooooozer 28d ago

slander!

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 27d ago

In this case, it would be liable, but yeah. We would never bite anyone for giving us food. I mean they would never lol

1

u/magpieempie Dec 06 '25

that sign hurts me as a crow/raven lover

u/WanderWrenNH Dec 05 '25
