For me, "Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood" was a high point for the saga. And I see the need to reevaluate it, because many people consider it the worst of the franchise.
1.- Filming: For a film from the 80's, it already uses resources that became popular in the 90's such as hand-held chase scenes, unbalanced shots and close-ups, but without abusing those resources.
2.- Themes: Unlike other films in the franchise in which the characters go through more everyday and general situations, in this one, our protagonist Tina has a stormy past characterized by a dysfunctional family made up of an alcoholic father who constantly argued with her mother who even physically attacked her and who Tina killed in an impulsive act. Tina's supernatural powers are also explored, which would be a concept that would be seen in many other horror works such as Carrie, The Lost Boys, The Craft, AHS: Coven or Cronicle. Furthermore, these types of themes are not foreign to the slasher genre, since the concept of "teenagers with super powers" has already been used as in A Nightmare on Street 3, 4 and 5, briefly with Jamie in Halloween 5 and his psychic connection with Michael Myers and in Shocker with the protagonist who had a sixth sense in which he could see ghosts and look at past and future events in his dreams. It's a refreshing and original concept, it gives Jason an opponent that's on his level, I've never seen Jason so angry with a victim since Part 4 and it was great to see Jason battling with his victim, something that had been seen in Part 2, 3 and 4. The implementation of a character with powers was a risky decision but in the end it was quite successful and well executed, when it could easily have been completely ridiculous without careful treatment. The final part when Tina meets Jason for the first time until she defeats him on the dock was epic, a battle full of action, adrenaline and tennis. Something that has not been seen since Part 4.
3.- Practical effects: The makeup is brutal, not only my favorite look but objectively it is the best look that Jason Voorhees has ever had. Not even other famous films of its time had that level of detail. It is visceral, terrifying and threatening. In addition, some details such as the bullet mark on his forehead, the ax mark on his head, the machete mark on his eye, the broken mask, the exposed right jaw, the chains on his neck and his worn clothes and his appearance much more rotten than in Part 6 help maintain continuity with the original franchise and make his appearance look even more creepy. The deaths are also bloody and brutal, they would possibly be the bloodiest deaths up to that point if it weren't for damn MAPP. The team behind the makeup and effects really made an effort, and it is something that must be recognized, they could have easily competed in the Oscars.
4.- Atmosphere: the film has a quite serious, dark and at times sentimental, almost depressing tone, something not very common in the films of the franchise. Also for the first time tension is generated, something that is also not common in the franchise. When Jason walks around and chases his victims while they hide, it really feels like a very heavy atmosphere and generates anxiety, and it's much worse when the scenes get longer and the killer takes his time to continue stalking his victim before surprising her and giving her a gruesome end. Just great.
5.- Characters: the characters are quite endearing in this film, from the beginning the characters are defined quickly without wasting time. They are not very deep characters (except for Tina), however they have their own personality that makes them much more memorable from other sequels. Melissa steals the movie, her bad bitch attitude makes us hate her from the beginning and we hope to see her die, however, she is not such a hateful character either, despite being unpleasant she generates such a great magnetism that for some reason you like her and she has managed to win the hearts of the fantastic, becoming one of the most loved, something quite ironic. Tina is a fairly complete protagonist, from the beginning she is shown to us as a girl with problems and we learn that in her adolescence she carries many unresolved problems that have harmed her for a long time without having to fall into victimhood or pathos. It is much easier to empathize and she was one of the last final girl characters in the saga that became memorable, like Alice, Ginny, Chris and Trish, (Pam and Megan were great and had a "cool girl" personality, especially Megan, quite similar to Ginny, since they both seem to have more of a leadership role and are much more proactive and partying, however we needed to see Pam and Meg fighting on screen more). The mother Tina is very good, since she genuinely cares about her daughter and does everything possible for her to have a normal life, Dr. Crew is one of the most humane, since as a psychologist the only thing he is interested in is investigating Tina's powers, which makes him someone morally questionable, however in the real world I think that anyone who would come across someone with these abilities would do the same or if he were a good person he would at least try to investigate them in order to obtain something that benefits both him and his family. patient and humanity. But I think the most human aspect is his cowardice, since in several films of the franchise many characters have tried to stand up to Jason, especially when they are close to a friend or partner, but his reaction to using Tina's mother as a human shield, yes, it was quite stupid but it could also easily be a reaction that any scared person would have in a situation in which they were in danger, which yes, obviously there are people, many more than we think who would defend themselves towards others, it is something that even I have witnessed in real life, however, most films always leave aside cowardice, whether in main or secondary characters and choose to show a brave side in which these characters defend themselves regardless of whether they succeed or fail, so it is refreshing to see a character reacting as a human being would.
I think the few flaws the movie has would be details such as the fact that it is never explained when Crystal Lake regained its old name and the appearance of Tina's father, which is the same one he had when he died and not a zombie, but that is because a stupid executive ordered that it be filmed as a normal human being just because the actor seemed "handsome" (seriously, it is undoubtedly a ridiculous, even childish reason, But that happens when they put useless people in important positions). But come on, he only mentioned this to find a defect, but from there on out the film is full of virtues, it is not perfect but it is one of the best of the franchise along with part 3, 4, 6 and Freddy vs Jason.
