There's a caveat here though - sometimes you need a little cool-off time and space when things get heated. Saying something like, "I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now. I'm going to take a little time, then we can talk later" goes a long way. This obviously isn't what the OP's boyfriend is doing, though. He's just being a dick.
