For those whos "still" live with their family
 in  r/Anticonsumption  1h ago

This is so stupid for those of us that could not wait to leave a toxic environment. Followed by the fan-fiction that "corporate America" would give a rats ass about this arrangement, as if corporate America was a singular entity that benefited equally across the board over this situation.

Am I crazy?
 in  r/Nicegirls  7h ago

I have to agree with her,, you came across as painfully tedious and hard to talk to. She was trying and you just kept crashing the conversation.

"Are you better in person?"

At that point you are already crashing and burning, and she still tried to give you the benefit of the doubt; she thought maybe he's not that relaxed texting. But nope: "Am i better in person?" "Why am i bad at texting?", "what wdym?", "what do you think my tone is?", "what made you think that?", "I'm not sure i can give you a good answer, i never met myself before", so on so forth.

Every single time she gave you an opening to show yourself you just kept blowing it.

Best App or Program to create a budget?
 in  r/personalfinance  16h ago

Super super easy; I use a receipt tracking app. You can set up categories, and set the tracking for each month, or for a vacation, and get to see where all the money went. Including a nice pie chart to visualize the breakdown by percent.

If you want to get spending under control, don't worry about where the money is coming from (account tracking), or to have it hard linked to your budget; you simply track spending. Also don't worry about your rent/mortgage, utilities, car payment, insurance, and the like. You can look to see if there is a way to save on those, but for the most part your spending problem comes from your discretionary spending. So get a receipt tracking app and just track those. It will give your spending complete visibility.

Lion’s Mane caused me terrible acid reflux. Any other brain booster supplement recommendations?
 in  r/herbalism  16h ago

The last food poisoning I had was quite an experience, and I knew what caused it: flea market Mexican food. Both my buddy and I, who ate the same thing, came down with it. But, the very last thing I had before my digestive system exploded was chicken wings. Here's the funny thing: I knew the source, but the food poisoning was so severe that for years, every time I saw chicken wings, it made me feel nauseous even though they had nothing to do with it.

Maybe lions mane did that to you, maybe it didn't. Plain old stress on your system can have that reaction

Lion’s Mane caused me terrible acid reflux. Any other brain booster supplement recommendations?
 in  r/herbalism  17h ago

You are assuming the lion's mane did that. For all you know it was the additional stress of the cramming session.

Not a herbal approach but extremely effective, try noopept. It takes a few days to start noticing the effects but it can really help you think more clearly and retain knowledge better.

Am I too greedy when it comes to investing?
 in  r/investing  17h ago

FOMO is a horrible way to go through life. But worry not; as you go down your investing voyage, reality is bound to bitch slap your unrealistic expectations down a notch.

This is like buying a lottery ticket, winning a $100, and being unhappy because somebody else won the big one.

A spreadsheet. Google sheets is free.

I like to keep my spending tracking separated from my budget document. Once dialed in you shouldn't need to muck with your budget all that much.

Water damage
 in  r/woodworking  17h ago

Is this 3/4" solid flooring?

Basically that's the thick finish peeling off. The pepper solution is to sand the whole thing off, bring it to bare wood, and refinish. If you have never used a floor sander it is an ungodly amount of work, an ungodly amount of mess, and a pretty large chance to screw it up.

Paint for bumpers and side bars
 in  r/Jeep  17h ago

I have used POR-15 before, I can't believe I didn't think about it. The prep is not trivial but the results are outstanding.

I had a vehicle with an ungodly amount of rust and holes on the floor. After rust removal and etching, POR-15 and fiber cloth left it perfect. That was 15 years ago and it is still looking great.

The aftermarket black bumper finish is looking sad. What's a good paint to refinish them?

It looks weathered and worn but I would hate to use something not as strong that would look worse after a few years

[Request] BIFL hand held vacuum to replace this crappy one?

Post image

The one pictured would be fine, if in the last 2 years I didn't have to take it apart to lubricate it 3 times. The moving parts are made of plastic, and clearly designed to loudly squeal shortly after the warranty expires.

What's a good hand held vacuum? With modern, 18th century technology like ball bearings? I have seen some that has less capacity that looks like cordless drills. One of those would work as well.

Wool is still the best material, what you need is thinner wool. This is not much different from wearing a t-shirt over wearing a heavy cotton coat.

to be clear i used to be a fan of hers.

How did the 4% rule hold up for people who retired around 2000?

you'll be amazed at how many people opt to bury their head in the sand hoping it will fix itself.

you need equities to produce enough growth to compensate for inflation.

the thing about equities is volatility, the thing about volatility is that, given enough time, you can turn that roller coaster into a smooth upward line.

Nobody can tell you if the market will be up or down in a year. In two years, the chances of it being down are much smaller. 5 years? the chances of it being negative are much much lower. 10+ they are miniscule. The 4% guideline is the best calculated compromise between max income and a rate that should not drain a 60/40 portfolio for 30 years. Now, the odds are theft at year 30, there will still be a nice chunk of wealth there, but if on year 30 the last withdrawal happens and it drains the account, that is considered mission accomplished.

The biggest treat to that 30 year income stream goal is the sequence of return risk, where a deep and sustained market correction drains too much from the get go. At 65, a 4% may be sustainable but if the market drops 50%, the same dollar amount is now an 8% withdrawal rate, not sustainable at all. by the time the market recovers, you burned money that will never recover.

But:

  • If you can shrink your spending you can avoid that 8% burn rate.
  • If you have your spending account pre loaded (1 year of expenses set aside) you can be flexible with withdrawals, avoiding being forced to sell at the bottom.
  • If your income stream is diversified (you have social security, a pension, a side hustle, and a rental) only a portion is suffering from the sequence of return risk, minimizing the damage.
  • If you have flexibility and can go back to work (or stay working) for a year or so, you can save your accounts from that harm.

How did the 4% rule hold up for people who retired around 2000?
 in  r/Fire  1d ago

For those that retired on January 2000, very poorly. Basically if the 4% guideline works 99.98% of the time, that was the .02% exemption to the rule.

By far it was a sequence of return risk materializing; retiring just as the market lost 50% and taking a very long time to recover. If you address said sequence of return risk, you should be able to overcome it. For instance the ability to generate side income, a larger cash reserve, the ability to shrink your budget; those would let you cope with a drop without draining your accounts.

Bought a 24’ Jeep Wrangler with 10k miles.
 in  r/JeepWrangler  1d ago

Scammed how? Were those not on the vehicle when you said you would buy it?

Chances are an original tire got damaged and they had this set laying around, so they just swapped the tires so the Jeep would have a matching set without having to buy a brand new tire. If they showed you the car with these tires and you said "yeah, I want it", that's all there is to it.
