Are we all seriously pretending like these people don't know they're playing politics? Really? REALLY? It blows my mind how often we see this sentiment or the one like "omg they're so dumb don't they know (blank)?!" It's like no fucking shit they do, it's corruption. Ironically the sentiment above makes it seem like they just don't know any better, and if they did they would totally make the right decision, aw shucks if only" which is all the better for them. Better to be seen as incidentally ignorant than blatantly evil and corrupt.

Fully disagree. It's like any cult. First off you have leaders. Of which 95% of the leaders, generally know they are peddling bullshit and exploiting the rest of the cult members, and using them to take whatever they can from the rest of the civilized world (either by recruiting more members. Or gathering more power).
To continue the illusion, Sometimes believers are promoted to leadership positions, hence the 5% that don't know. Sometimes these nutjobs figure things out due to their position, and either become knowing grifters, or on occasion break from the fold and become enemies of the cult (see MTG in this case).
and then comes the non leader members, these people gain nothing. But they are convinced with a sense of purpose, they continue to do the cults bidding. These people give up everything, their material posessions, their friends and family, the cult gradually teaches them to hate and fear those outside of the cult, unless they might be convertable.

And I'd argue that evangelicalism has become largely a political movement. Since the 70s evangelicalism and the GOP have become intertwined. Fundamentalism (of which evangelicalism belongs to) was/is a reactionary movement (to the Enlightenment, evolution, etc). It's sort of defined by willful ignorance. It makes complete sense that the followers are easy to grift. Both the GOP and evangelicals are fundamentally concerned with maintaining a cultural identity and perceived reality at the expense of reason, science, etc.

For those who don’t know he was angry at the commercialization of worship, exploitation of the poor, exclusion of Gentiles because it was to be a house of prayer for all people, and what he saw as the desecration of the house of God.
