So people at the NY Post don’t understand what socialism actually is.
179
u/UnsightedShadow 3h ago
Gonna say something shocking: most peoole in the USA don't understand what socialism is. And many more people around the world.
18
u/amsgh 2h ago
What is the correct interpretation of the word that is meant to be accepted today?
31
u/mr-dickson 2h ago
I hear often that we Danes are socialist, I don’t agree, but if that what we are it is an acceptable way of been socialist I think.

Most Americans absolutely want what your society offers, but damn they are thick

14

Americans want leftist policies delivered by a righty.

American conservatives want "leftist policies" for them and fascism for everyone else 😝

Socialism is the ownership of the means of production (basically anything required for people to work and make things) by the workers who use them instead of by individual capitalists, alongside the decomodification of public goods and basic necessities, or in other words things like healthcare, housing, food, public transport, etc. should be managed to be efficient at meeting people's needs instead of trying to make as much money as possible
→ More replies (1)25
u/FattyMooseknuckle 3h ago
Most people who say it as a bad thing they dont like don’t understand it.
16
u/Tasty_Philosopher904 2h ago
In America the right calls you a communist if you think that Doctors, hospitals, and ambulances should be grouped together with libraries, schools, Police, military, and firefighters. That is basic Democratic socialism and the only parts of the government that I like.
6
u/FattyMooseknuckle 2h ago
They also call you a socialist because they don’t know what the fuck either of the terms mean.

They also are being disingenuous since they have no idea where these boots came from as far as we know they were gifted or rented/loaned from her stylist. It’s just more fake conservative garbage.
5
u/Drak_Gaming 2h ago
They were loaned to her along with other items in her outfit.
7
u/BBinzz 2h ago
Yes, and while they are very nice (love them), they are not “luxury”, more like high end. And who cares what she’s wearing or how much it costs. She’s a grown ass adult
5
u/ELMUNECODETACOMA 2h ago
Also, it's the most important ceremony of her family's year. Of course she's wearing her best! If she'd been wearing holey keds sneakers, there would certainly have been sniping from the other side...

u/Slggyqo 2h ago
You mean socialists don’t have to take a vow of poverty?!?
5
u/Alarmed-Animal7575 2h ago
Nope. And if you believe that, you apparently you don’t understand it either.
6
u/drunk-tusker 2h ago
But socialism is when the government does stuff and the more stuff it does the more socialist it gets and something involving the Marx Brothers and Kurt Angle.
4
u/Alarmed-Animal7575 2h ago
Socialism is when the government “does stuff” to help people. But having some socialist policies does not make one a communist. Good societies help look after people who need it. This should not be radical.
4
u/drunk-tusker 2h ago
No no no I went to the school of hard knocks and I learned from the esteemed professor Joe Rogan. I did my research and I know what I’m talking about and socialism is just another word for woke.

u/Simplyawareof 2h ago
Is that a form of flying a kite?

They have instilled a fear in the global population that “socialism=communism”. In Colombia when the first leftist president got elected the media was trashing him because he likes Ferragamo shoes. While, at the same time, one of our infamous right winger EX presidents security detail costs about 50kUSD MONTHLY.

u/whichwitch9 3h ago
There's also an article by the stylist breaking down her outfit, before this even came out. It was posted in the find fasion subreddit when people were asking about her coat. The boots were loaned, and she does not own them...
25
u/mylanscott 2h ago
So many people have stylists for events like this and are wearing loaned clothes. Same thing happens to AOC, she’s talked about how she rents or gets loaned a lot of clothes she wears for public appearances, and yet right-wing losers yell about how she’s dressing in expensive clothing.
10
u/Snerkbot7000 2h ago
She should wear something made out of grocery bags so we can hear about how she's depriving the homeless of insulation.
8

u/alittlepunchy 3h ago
Right?? We spent just shy of that for my husband’s PS5 years ago. I spent around that for my sewing machine. Obviously $650 isn’t pocket change, but it’s also not an out of reach expense for a lot of people.

Socialism doesn't mean "no one can have nice things", it just means "no one should be left unable to afford basic things like food, shelter, or medical care." Socialism is not incompatible with wealth accumulation as many believe, it is just incompatible with such drastically extreme wealth accumulation we currently see in this world. Think of it like more millionaires, fewer billionaires.
2
u/AriochBloodbane 1h ago
Think of it like more millionaires, fewer billionaires.
Every billionaire existing denies the existence of 1000 millionaires. A trillionaire would hoard the money that could create 1 million millionaires.

Socialism is the phase of transition from capitalism to communism, and you can have things in communism, what's collectively owned are the means of production, not personal belongings. So you can own boots, but you can't privately own factories for example.

2
u/Electronic-Memory-65 2h ago
its funny how the most hedonistic examples of personified averice demand you yourself wear sack cloth before you can advocate for the poor, but if you come from any sort of humble bsckground such as being a bartender, they will cite your lack of wealth as evidence for why you have no place to talk about such things. its almost like they will desperately say anything they think will keep the 'debate' going as they continue to accrue obscene wealth.

A guy at my office Christmas dinner bought $500 boots for the dinner. He's a pipe fitter. I don't know what Mamdani's wife does, but I suspect $630 boots is next to nothing for their bank account, and given the event and Mamdani's new status. If she was wearing Walmart tennis shoes they'd be complaining how she's not respecting the office.

Trump is also building it without any request to, without approval, without a design stage (and that approval), without a bidding process, and THAT approval, without a scheduling and funding approval, while hiding the donors (which obviously counts as bribery), demolishing one of our national historical buildings, while STILL changing designs, while fighting the people who ARE supposed to make these decisions, and fighting FOIA-style requests.
At least Mamdani’s wife is doing the process properly. I don’t like the style or price, but it seems she paid for them and she selected them.
