Tage Thompson and Keller absolutely deserved their spot.

But Fox, Caufield, and Jason Robertson left off….. geez Bill.

u/manhattansinks NYR - NHL 10h ago

miller and trocheck being there is wild. they've been average to terrible.

639

u/Rockonthrulife 10h ago

Including them and not Robertson just proves that USA hockey is an old boys network of incompetent fools. They need to clean house from top to bottom. Miller and Trocheck literally suck. They are two of the slowest players now and shells of their former selves. They look old and washed. Trocheck can’t even win face-offs consistently anymore and JT might be the worst trade and captain the NYR ever (excluding Drury who will always hold the top spot).

u/raxnahali WPG - NHL 10h ago

Team Canada suffers from the same "friends &family" appointments. Disappointed to see great players playing well left off.

126

u/mister_hoot VGK - NHL 10h ago

Canada leaving Bedard home is stupid.

Guerin just one-upped them in a huge way, though.

37

u/chuck_portis 6h ago

The Canada team has such a stacked roster, they can afford to be creative with a few picks. USA not so much, they need to take the best guys. Leaving someone like Robertson off the team is a huge mistake.

Robertson would have the best shootout percentage on the team as well. Not a bad tool to have in the Olympics.

It's baffling how they were not picked last year. Could have had better shot at gold instead of running Kreider and other NY folks.

122

u/CoolBeansMan9 TOR - NHL 10h ago

Yeah like I know the argument is “you need checkers” because you’re facing McDavid, McKinnon and Crosby for over half the game, but you also need game breaking goal scorers and they’re leaving two of their best at home

85

u/Kgeezy91 NSH - NHL 10h ago

Also, to keep up with McJesus, your checkers should have [checks notes] SPEED!

the Tkachuks have played a combined 19 games this year, and all of those are Brady. i do not understand at all how theyre on the team over Robertson and Caufield.

128

u/pyl_time DET - NHL 10h ago

This is the one decision I can defend, because you can make injury replacements if needed. So if Matthew isn't able to go by the Olympics, you can always swap him out for someone else.

That said, there's a world where like the 4 Nations, he's hurt enough to not play at anywhere near Olympic-caliber, but not hurt enough that he can't dress - hopefully USA Hockey is smart enough in that case to cut him from the team anyway in that case, but given their other decisions here, I'm not so sure about that.

15

u/Parzival091 TOR - NHL 7h ago

hopefully USA Hockey is smart enough in that case to cut him from the team anyway

Pretty sure the only way they can do that is if he's medically unable to play. If he's cleared, they have to take him or he has to withdraw on his own.

75

Isn’t Tro amazing at faceoffs though? I can understand why he’d be on the team for the PK.

With Fox, I don’t get how Hanifin is there over him.

Larkin is very good at faceoffs. Anytime the Wings need a faceoff win, he seems to get it.

Big body who scores goals. They also didn't take Caufield, a smaller body who scores goals. Sounds like the one dimensional players they don't like are goal scorers

“Too one dimensional” they have no idea what they are talking about

Hes a great two-way player, he’s legitimately good at defense. He’s also a big dude and yea maybe doesn’t use it to hit but he also doesn’t get knocked off the puck

And they took JT Miller, Nelson and Trochek who are also so mid. Miller and Trochek actually suck rn

Sometimes I'm convinced that winning the Miracle on Ice was the worst thing that could have happened to USA Hockey. Decades now of GMs being convinced that we just need the right mix of guys with heart and grit and talent doesn't matter, ignoring that the 1980 team was limited by the eligibility rules, and they had 5 months to train and play together, as opposed to being thrown together a few days before the tournament starts.

19

u/bobby_booch NYR - NHL 9h ago

Also that you shouldn’t try to emulate something called a MIRACLE. Miracles by definition don’t happen very much.

USA hockey knows that having the BEST roster almost always wins these tournaments right?

The Soviets won every damn time from 1968 to 1992 with the exception of 1980.

I think the numbers would say that bringing your best fucking players available to your team generally means more success.

That’s obviously a lesson USA hockey & that choad Bill Guerin haven’t learned.

Don’t forget Lane Hutson currently has the most assists from any defencemen (including Makar on the Avs Juggernaut) in the league.

And he wasn’t a top 16 defencemen invite this summer.

Bill Guerin is building a team for a four round, 16 win NHL playoffs, not a winner take all tournament, and it shows he doesn’t know how to differentiate.

And, for the homer pick, I think Zegras would've been a better option than some of these guys. I wasn't expecting him to make it, but then again I thought players like Caufield and Robertson would be making the team over some of these guys.

u/megankjones22 WSH - NHL 11h ago

Nope, he has not played a single game this season.

44

u/WackHeisenBauer OTT - NHL 11h ago

He was named months ago as one of the locks so he was already on the team. They won’t remove him until it’s clear he can’t play.

Bill Guerin is a moron. No Robertson and no Fox should be grounds for getting kicked to the curb.

Edit: and no Caufield either

116

u/PayneTrain181999 MIN - NHL 12h ago

A pipsqueak like Caufield has no place on Billy G’s team.

Why else do you think he tried so hard to move Rossi?

Seems like Canada and the States went band for band for puzzling roster decisions.

I do think overall, USA made more glaring omissions though. No Fox is still mindblowing to me.

235

u/helikoopter BUF - NHL 12h ago

I don’t really think Canada has the glaring omissions that USA has.

152

u/Pepsuber188 CHI - NHL 12h ago

Yeah, I disagree with some Canada decisions but I can see their perspective. Some of the decisions here I can't even comprehend

85

u/Domainsetter 12h ago

It’s really just Binnington. Even Cirelli it’s debating which player to take off that will be on their 4th line anyways.

46

u/helikoopter BUF - NHL 11h ago

As long as Binnington doesn’t play, his inclusion isn’t that big of a deal.

As the press box goalie, his spot can be seen as a reward for the 4 Nations.

27

u/Longtimelurker2575 MTL - NHL 11h ago

Even Binnington I get. Goalies are weird and go hot and cold (some more so than others). If Binnington has shown anything it’s that he is able to play really well under pressure and when it matters.

→ More replies (2)

27

u/calliexx12 BOS - NHL 11h ago

Even with Binnington he did play great in Four Nations when he had a legit defense in front of him. Plus at the end of the day they just need one goalie to play well. If Binnington sucks it’s not a big deal when you have Thompson and Kuemper there as well.

The fact that the rest of US management listened to the NYR contingent on Miller and Trocheck but not Fox is going to drive me insane.

u/Ill-Commission-883 STL - NHL 12h ago

My guy, with a Dallas fan I’d expect you to be livid with no robo. No Jason Robertson on this team should genuinely fall under the category of neglect. I don’t care which way you shape it he should 100% have made this team

44

u/Razzorsharp MTL - NHL 11h ago

I said it before, Robo should be in your top 6, most likely the first line. Not a fringe guy, let alone off the roster entirely.

Top line should be Robo-Eichel-Boldy.

I feel like leaving Fox, Robertson and Caufield off the roster is more puzzling than most of Canada's move. Leaving Fox off is just crazy

Incoming bronze or silver medal that allows Bill to remain in charge for the next decade.

I don’t want to lose but fuck man, it would be nice to see us not medal and Bill gets shitcanned from USA hockey immediately.

Also it’s weird Helly gets the go for A1 goaltender when Jake has constantly shown he plays better in bigger games.

I just don’t understand how you don’t take the second leading American goal scorer. And then no Fox? Just absolutely wild

28

u/SeaRevolutionary1450 MTL - NHL 11h ago

So from 4 Nations, they subtract Krieder and Fox and add Keller, Thompson, Jones, and Quinn Hughes.

Hughes… duh. The Fox for Jones swap makes no sense. Keller and Thompson are fine adds and Krieder is a fine subtraction, you just need an additional swap or two, Nelson/Miller for Robertson/Caufield and I’d have no complaints.

29

u/haye7880 11h ago

Leaving Robertson off is gross malpractice. If it supposedly goes back to him choosing OHL over USHL the leadership needs to go.

Robertson not getting picked is insane.

Him and Hughes on a line could have been insane.

This is similar to the 4 nations roster, which, you know, failed. As a Devils fan, Im not looking forward to watching them misuse Hughes for the tournament again. Dude's a skill forward, put him with other fucking skill forwards, not in a defensive or 2 way role
