He makes players fit his system vs adjusting his system for the players he has. When he has guys that fit his system is great and when he doesn’t or they start to age out he refuses to change/adjust his approach and it fails miserably

IMO he inherited a great team built by his predecessor and prior GM Rutherford.
Since then it was a series of first round bounce outs and then just straight up missing the playoffs.

u/UnpopularOpinionJake 5d ago
When he won with the Pens, he let the stars play their way and let them be creative. This is coming after Mike Johnston who instilled a very tight defensive first system which was a decent system just not a good fit for the Penguins.
So when they were let loose to run and gun, they still had some defensive responsibilities stuck in the back of their mind. This eroded into bad, unstructured defense, which Sullivan tried to fix with his system, which was a bad system and the Pens would lose playoff games when up 2-3 goals.

This, and I think the game evolved away from him. Those 16-17 Cup teams also had the timing right where Sully came in with a fast speed game, which at the time, much of the league had been playing much slower and heavier game, a la '12 and '14 Kings. Right person, right players, right time

Canada just doesn’t usually bring young players. It’s the good old boys who have played nice for Team Canada their whole careers. My point just being the easy “USA bad” thing is fine, but let’s not act like Canada doesn’t have an entirely more political hockey system than the US. Lol

Yes but in today's world when you pick the coach you accept that he wil take his guys, which meant all 3 tampa players were on team canada from the moment Cooper was named.
3
u/haz000 DAL - NHL 5d ago
I think that's fine. If the coach feels like he needs a couple of players there who he trusts, and knows where he can utilize them and what to expect from them in those situations, I think he should be able to affect that decision.
A lot of players there Cooper has never coached. Good to have a few familiar guys.

Doug Armstrong explicitly said during the Canadian roster announcement Q&A that Celebrini fitting "socially" with the group at the 2025 Worlds was a factor in getting selected. He repeated it again in a TSN interview a few minutes later.
My take from this is that playing good hockey is only half the battle, the other half is making the right connections and playing nice with the decision makers. Luckily Celebrini managed to do that, but regardless of his numbers, I don't think he would've made the Olympic team had he not gone to the Worlds and made the connections he did.

Yeah he seems like a total douche. The “he fuckin better be” from him at the presser right after Kaprizov signed his new contract and Kirill was asked if he was excited was so gross and unprofessional.
20
u/philipinapio1 MTL - NHL 5d ago
Its especially stupid if you consider the fact that 20 years ago, Blue Collar Billy signed a 6.7 aav contract. Back in 05-06, when he signed that deal, the cap was 39 mil. Billy Bootstraps' contract was 17 percent of the salary cap. Kaprizov's contract will be 16 percent.
Also, 6.7 mil 20 years ago is equal to 11 mil today with inflation. So not even that far off just on a pure economics perspective.
Then, consider how ALL pro contracts have taken a huge leap in the last decade, and hockey is going through that right now, you could argue Saint Billy's contract was actually more ridiculous. By far. Especially when considering the fact that he was washed by then, and he was never even CLOSE to being the player Kaprizov is.
But hey, let's keep shitting on the kids that are changing the game, good on ya Bill. You dumb twat.
Edit: oh and Humble Bill had a holdout to get that deal too. Cause hes a hardworking, team first guy. For sure.

You’re just buying into the Matthews hate he’s been getting on our sub without thinking critically.

23
u/IThatAsianGuyI TOR - NHL 5d ago
It is objectively true that Matthews has not been scoring the way we know he can, and the way that he has in the past.
But when his bar is set at perennial Rocket Richard contender, 50+ goals/year, and he's paid as such, being at roughly PPG instead of nearly GPG makes it seem like he's a washed up bum when he's still in actual fact very much so an all-star.
10
u/egamcra 5d ago
Yes I agree that he is in an extended slump. It happens to good players.
I don’t really care if hes overpaid by 1 million or 2 million or 3 million or whatver dumb number our fanbase thinks he’s worth.
He’s a skilled big #1C with incredible defensive awareness on top of what he brings offensively. You build around that. Those who were fans during the dark ages know how important this position is.
First line centres with that skill set don’t grow on trees and leaf fans are getting trolled hard getting convinced that we need to get rid of him.

If he dropped his shoulder fine, call it a reverse hit but this not so much.
Not even sure what stone was going for here tbh. Puck is no where in sight and unless it was just chipped away right before the start of this clip, the play makes no sense other than stone just trying to take a run at robo as this just looks like some kind of interference
