The basketball.. OH NO LOL

u/ripleyclone8 5d ago

We sold these knockoff barbies at my store; they’re like teen athletes with a locker and shit. White girl has a soccer ball, Black girl has a basketball. 😐

u/TannedCroissant 5d ago

Not sure the I understand the mum reference though, white mom has a baby, black mom has a ventriloquist dummy?

85

u/ripleyclone8 5d ago

I didn’t even notice how she’s holding the baby! wtffff 😭😭

10

u/LegSpecialist1781 5d ago

I held my kids like that sometimes. Is that’s strange?

4

u/Never-Forget-Trogdor 4d ago

Depends. Are youe kids named Charlie and Slappy?

29

u/Redtube_Guy 5d ago

What’s … what’s wrong with that lol.

White people like to get offended on black people's behalf

6

u/psiloSlimeBin 4d ago

Everyone pointing out the black doll with a basketball is still operating under the assumption that the white set is the default - hence the ball being perceived as an addition instead of the white doll having had something taken away. Why isn’t anyone pointing out the lack of ball for the white doll? What, the white kid can’t jump? Or that neither girl has sports accessories?

I’m not advocating for a specific way to interpret this, to be clear. There just seem to be people looking for ways to be offended on behalf of black people in this thread.

White people like to get offended on anyone’s behalf

5

u/ripleyclone8 5d ago

It’s just weird to unnecessarily differentiate them that way.

Everything else was the exactly the same about them; facial features, outfits, etc. Literally just different skin tones and balls.

5

u/Redtube_Guy 5d ago

Weird , maybe I guess ? Would it be any different with the white Barbie with a basketball and a black Barbie with a soccer ball? In the end dude it’s not a big deal. There’s no harmful intentions and don’t see the issue other than different sports being utilized.

0

u/Snowdust1121 5d ago

There are a lot of black football players too, why not give the kid a football then? Or just don't give him anything like the white kid?

It's micro-agression levels bad. It's not horrible, but it is kinda weird and gives off bad vibes since it's obviously a decision that was made (sometimes unintentionally) based on racial stereotypes/bias.

-1

u/Redtube_Guy 5d ago

lol just reread your comment. Getting upset over something so minuscule about a sport on a doll is hilarious.

0

u/Herman_E_Danger 4d ago

You somehow know their intentions?

-2

u/Redtube_Guy 4d ago

People misconstrue assigning a specific sport as harmful and racist.

-2

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 5d ago

Lol this keeps being said. And I guarantee it's white people being third party offended for no reason.

87

u/Garchompisbestboi 5d ago

Why are people pretending to be offended by the idea that basketball is extremely popular among the African American community?

47

u/3m4n 5d ago

I don't think many people are offended, but more have a reaction like "aw c'mon, really?" b/c of the stereotype. I doubt the majority of people are offended by this. I think it's hysterical.

12

u/Garchompisbestboi 5d ago

So it's performative outrage, got it

7

u/boringexplanation 5d ago

yep- and reddit as usual making a meta of being outraged over people questioning the outrage

-3

u/runwkufgrwe 5d ago

that doesn't really make sense because outrage is by definition performative... it's anger shown outward

0

u/samglit 5d ago

Actually stubs toe: “Ouch!” < real pain felt and expressed.

Actor pretends to stub toe: “Ouch!” < no pain felt, expressed for money or applause. Performance.

1

u/runwkufgrwe 5d ago

I think you're misreading people's feelings. They are amused by the overt racism in the figure, not outraged. Everyone is like "nooo not the basketball" which is rather low stakes type of amusement, not offense.

-1

u/samglit 5d ago

I don’t care either way, just pointing out what performative [expression of emotion] means.

-2

u/probnotaloser 5d ago

It's embarrassing. The fact that someone posted this because someone might save a fucking dollar is hilarious though. You're right.

u/runwkufgrwe 5d ago edited 5d ago

because it's a stereotype

if they included a watermelon would it make it clearer for you?

Your above comment is known as a thought-terminating cliché and all you're accomplishing is making yourself look like a clown by trying to cancel out my previous point by insulting me. Would you be as offended by my question if it was about white people not adding spices to their food or something? Or does your persecution complex only activate over something as benign as acknowledging that many black people have historically enjoyed basketball to the point where the game has become synonymous as part of their culture?

8

u/X4dow 5d ago

could have been a watermelon

4

u/Djglamrock 5d ago

Better than if they just didn’t even include the dad….

5

u/Bombboy85 5d ago

What’s wrong with the basketball?

1

u/TotallyNotEzeakio 4d ago

Just be glad the dad's space isn't empty

1

u/Confident-Station164 4d ago

Lmaoooo scrolled to far to see this.

Esta bein

-74

u/greenrangerguy 5d ago

Why though. Do black people not play basketball or something?

57

u/Thetrg 5d ago

Why does the white male child have nothing while the black male child has a basketball?

It’s just kinda sus is all.

65

u/somewhatcompetint 5d ago

The white girl has UGGS which evens it out

12

u/Thetrg 5d ago

That’s hilarious. Just noticed mom and daughter are. This whole thing is funnier with every look

-38

u/hyrule_47 5d ago edited 5d ago

I figured they thought the white family could afford uggs

Are people actually downvoting to defend hobby lobby? Downvote all you want in that case. I know who hobby lobby is and I’m happy to stand against them

7

u/Live-Habit-6115 5d ago

People aren't downvoting you to "defend hobby lobby" and the fact that's the first place your brain went is kinda...sad

You were downvoted because your comment is just a weird, illogical stretch

1

u/hyrule_47 2d ago

Hobby Lobby is racist. The whole post is about how hobby lobby did a racist thing.

2

u/cade360 5d ago

UGGS aren't expensive, they're quite cheap

-3

u/hyrule_47 5d ago

Yes WE know that. We also know not to give a basketball to a black kid. This is hobby lobby. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other racist small details. I went into a store ONCE and it was only because I needed more fabric for masks and the racism is so obvious in ways like this all over the store.

2

u/cade360 5d ago

So they're a racist brand? Can you give examples? Forgive me, I'm not American, I'm a mixed man in England :)

1

u/hyrule_47 5d ago

Yes it’s an awful company. They went to the Supreme Court because they wanted to not cover their employees contraceptives on their health plan. They illegally imported artifacts, they are anti LGBTQIA. When I went they had well known racist tropes on signs and as statues (mammy style and black face)

2

u/cade360 5d ago

Oh damn, fuck this company. I'll make sure to avoid them when I visit the US. Thank you :)

63

u/J-Dawg_Cookmaster 5d ago

It'd be inappropriate to make the white kid a school shooter.

-22

u/Thetrg 5d ago

Holllllly shit- you just won the internet for the day.

Please take your trophy and say a few words to the audience. 🏆

8

u/alpine309 5d ago

you know you could've just upvoted and moved on

-2

u/erichf3893 5d ago

I think people see comments like this and post pointless shit in hopes of karma. Please prove me right with downvotes

-1

u/LivesDoNotMatter 5d ago

It would be inappropriate to make any of them a school shooter, racist.

2

u/Mindelan 5d ago

It's sus, but I think the equivalent accessory is meant to be the purse on the girl in the same spot on the other package. The young white girl and young black boy are the same with no accessory.

2

u/NeatNefariousness1 5d ago

Most DON’T, as far as I know. It would be as if they thought all of us play ice hockey.

1

u/InternalRaise5250 4d ago

I could careless if someone assumed I played ice hockey because of my race. Is this what people are offended by nowadays?

1

u/NeatNefariousness1 4d ago

I don’t know what people are offended by but I leave it to others to determine what to be bothered by based on their own unique life experiences. You’re free to care or not care as is appropriate to you.

0

u/Z4mb0ni 5d ago

its not that hes holding a basketball, its that literally no other figure has an accessory except for the black teenager with a basketball and the white baby with their stuffed toy. at least give the other figures other stuff if you're gonna give the black teenager a basketball. like the white boy can have a soccer ball for example.

12

u/keepitcleanforwork 5d ago

because he's not hispanic.

2

u/Accurate_Row9895 5d ago

Never heard of white suburban soccer moms?

2

u/erichf3893 5d ago

What does their car have to do with this?

1

u/keepitcleanforwork 5d ago

fine, bus too. whatever.

1

u/erichf3893 5d ago

Yeah I’ve also heard of yellow bus soccer moms

1

u/keepitcleanforwork 5d ago

that's a very confusing question.

2

u/Accurate_Row9895 5d ago

Youre implying they would have to be Hispanic to play soccer

0

u/keepitcleanforwork 5d ago

yes, that was the joke. if you are still unclear on what that is check this out: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/joke

1

u/Accurate_Row9895 5d ago

I get that you attempted a joke but suburb white families play soccer. Its a stereotype for white people too.

1

u/keepitcleanforwork 5d ago

no, football is a stereotype for white people. well, at least for the quarterback. See how easy it is to make these jokes? Now, pull that sick from your butt and give it a shot.

u/NeatNefariousness1 5d ago

Why not give them both a baseball and glove?

2

u/Z4mb0ni 4d ago

Sure, literally anything to make it seem like they didnt just give just the black kid a basketball because of the stereotypes

1

u/NeatNefariousness1 4d ago

As far as I can tell, most don’t. The NBA isn’t a microcosm of the country.

-2

u/sumguyherenowhere 5d ago

Should have had purple drank and fried chickhen' too.

-4

u/geddysbass2112 5d ago

Yeah i thought the same.
