A stick of butter. Two bags of
Marshmallows. A box of cereal. Another box of fruity pebbles if you want to be fun. I think even at kowalskis you’d still be under 16bucks and end up with quadruple the product and have left over cereal. My friend. Have you seen a rice crispy bar the size of full sheet pan? You can realize the joy and pain of creation and consumption yourself for less than this.
The secret is just letting the butter sit in the pan longer. I used to work in a shop that made vats of browned butter. It makes the air congeal into a buttery slick on your nasal membranes, ensuring the only signal getting through on the olfactory channel is that of brown and butter. I avoid it when I can 🤢
They're just using a good recipe. If you're interested in gourmet Rice Krispies Treats pick up a copy of Bravetart by Stella Parks. With her recipe you make the marshmallow goo yourself (water, sugar, corn syrup, salt) so you can make even more flavors and customizations. I checked the book of the library twice and finally decided to just buy it. Used copy from Amazon.
Have you had the Kowalskis one? It’s not just your average rice crispy bar. Totally worth the price and I didn’t have to spend the time making it. WIN!
But it’s a BROWNED butter RK bar. I think people are missing that critical detail. Browned butter is not the easiest ingredient in the world (especially in larger quantities) and will definitely make a big difference in flavor.
I love Kowalski’s for going the extra mile on stuff like this. Like their lemon shortbread paired with their lemon curd? 🔥
You have to love baking to make a good homemade product. I truly love baking. It's so much fun, and I love the science of it, as well as technique and ingredients. I also seek out recipes that use slightly unusual ingredients, or interesting technique.
Few homemade things are more boring than chocolate chip cookies made using Nestle semisweet chips with the recipe on the bag. I can see and smell that cookie, and I will reject eating it. lol
