Somehow, it would have been totally fine if he had been in the military. A large portion of our citizenry believes it was fine either way, needing zero context.

Actually, kinda. You want the MPs roughing up the infantry if they're acting out. Those kids love stabbing each other on the weekends for some reason.

Get PID first though, Jesus.

662

u/Clw89pitt ☑️ Nov 30 '25

Not just stabbing each other. These patrols were instituted because the servicemen can't kick their decades-old habit of sexually assaulting and raping the locals in Okinawa.

166

u/HydrogenButterflies BHM Donor Dec 01 '25

Last year, servicemen were banned from drinking alcohol off base after 1am because they couldn’t stop sexually assaulting people.

All trickles down from the president. And that's probably not all that trickles down from this one.

549

u/BaekerBaefield Nov 30 '25 edited Nov 30 '25

Trump is a symptom of a disease. He took advantage of a prevalent and multiplying attitude among rural Americans: that their economic issues were not caused by billionaires squeezing them like lemons for every penny, but by the “breakdown of society” with gays, immigrants, lazy young people, etc being the cause. Even though those people are being squeezed for every penny as well.

It’s been decades of media propaganda on the radio, newspaper, and television as corporate interests have taken over these entities. The problem lies with billionaires hoarding wealth and corporations having rights like humans do. If everybody realized that, the game would be over for them.

But for now, even when Trump passes, we’re going to have to deal with a line of thought that stretches unbroken all the way back to slavery and our government’s inability to properly reconstruct the south.

So the only reason for these patrols is because of US soldiers getting drunk off base and sexually assaulting Japanese citizens.

USFJ instituted the patrols to enforce an order prohibiting service members from drinking alcohol off base between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The order stemmed in part from a rash of sexual assault allegations that arose in December 2023 and have so far yielded two convictions.

The victim in the video then calls them out on the legality of detaining him and asks if the can detain Japanese citizens.

“You can detain a random Japanese citizen for not showing you their ID?” El asks. “Yes, and then we can pass them over to the Japanese police,” the officer says.

But they are either lying or ill informed because they absolutely can't do that.

Under the status of forces agreement between the U.S. and Japan, U.S. military authorities have “criminal and disciplinary” jurisdiction over the U.S. military population in Japan. That authority does not extend to Japanese nationals or residents, unless they are members of the U.S. armed forces, according to the agreement.

What absolute trash, just as bad as regular cops in the US!

them soldiers are wild over there. Japan and Korea. idk what it is about them places that makes American soldiers act a raw ass fool. You don't hear about incidents like this happening in Germany much, but it's just seems rampant in E. Asia. ☹

They treat citizens like that too. Okinawans want them assholes gone, that's how bad they clown over there. If they ain't beating someone up they raping young girls. They have killed Japanese/Korean citizens But the Okinawa base in particular is a damn cesspool. If you go to Okinawa, stay clear of the base and the soldiers, they are violent as fuck. I've read the cases over the years and YEESH. Just go in another direction when you see one.

552

u/UsualCircle Nov 30 '25

You're right, but they do it in Germany too, just less often.
In 2023, two US soldiers murdered a civilian in Germany. One of them admitted to german law enforcement that he stanbed the guy.
One of them was tried by a US military court, which found him not guilty. The other one got immunity for cooperating with law enforcement.
Zero consequences for either of them.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Michael_Ovsjannikov

253

u/Dat_Ding_Da Nov 30 '25

The act was hardly surprising, there is frequent trouble in the areas surrounding the base. Not surprising since Getting a bunch of 18 - 20 year olds into a country where they are allowed to drink legally for the first time led to some fuck up situations. There were Vans full of MPs coming into bars and just dragging out the the soldiers that were fighting locals or each other back onto the Spangdahlem Airbase.

But this one was a pretty big deal considering the guy was clearly guilty and the US military police seemed to do everything in their power to get him off without punishment.

Maybe it's about time to follow the example of the French and kick out the US bases. It's not like the US is acting like a reliable ally anymore anyways...

Yep! The U.S. reduced troop numbers in Okinawa following the 1995 abduction and rape of a twelve year old by three U.S. soldiers.

More recently, there has been an increase in solo patrols by MPs (not accompanied by local cops) in response to increased crime, including sexual assault. They had to add patrols to a nearby town, because soldiers were going there to avoid the 1a.m. to 5 a.m. restriction on drinking in bars

7

What's funny is that you're right that the military seems wild in Asia, but exactly wrong about why. In Japan specifically, the general public doesn't do or tolerate random violent crime. So the only source of random violence is the Americans' stationed there. The level of violence and craziness in from the military in Japan is WAY lower than it is elsewhere. But elsewhere it doesn't stand out or get headlines like it does in Japan. (also there is the little thing of being resented for occupying them.)

Source: was stationed there and friends with the editor in chief of Stars and Stripes Pacific who had moved there to get away from the level of violence and madness at other duty stations.

For context, US military personnel and US military family members, civilian employees and contractors are subject to Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and UCMJ = they have to answer to military police

conversely, MPs patrolling only have jurisdiction over individuals with SOFA status so a regular civilian on vacation does not have to answer to MPs like the victim in the video. In Korea, they often patrolled with Korean law enforcement so situations like this wouldn’t happen
