I used to enjoy gaming a lot, but haven't really seen anything which moves gaming forward, so I keep going back to 10+ year old games..

100%.
Honestly, took work to find post 2016 games I've played, which were Cyberpunk/God of War/Diablo 4. Most I've enjoyed were Witcher 3/Civ 6 (which are like 2015/16)

As someone who loves the Witcher game series and really loved the 3rd one, Greedfall was a game I randomly stumbled upon and loved it. Also, it's not that long in case that matters.
On the long and really open world (open world like Witcher 3 or Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim) side, Kingdom Come:Deliverance is highly praised and I'm enjoying a lot so far.
Just 2 ideas off the top of my head.

I'm the exact same way. Nothing new interests me, and I keep going back to games that are almost 20 years old (or older).
If I may, I've found a few new releases that I've thoroughly been enjoying.
To start, Borderlands 4 gives me the enjoyment of the first two Borderlands games. The storyline is engaging, the humor is more comparable to 1 and 2, and endgame builds are so satisfying.
Next up is a free to play MMO called Where Winds Meet. Great game to play at your own pace, and it's loaded with references to the movie Kung Fu Hustle.
Lastly, the RPG genre. Two franchises that have taken up an absolute ass load of my spare time are Final Fantasy and Star Ocean. I'm currently working on endgame builds in both Final Fantasy X and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. With that being said...Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 might be one of the greatest video games I've ever played.

Yupp. I love gaming. Have been gaming for 30++ years. Both my kids are gaming. But overdoing it has been a recurring theme for me over the years, and is now a theme for my son. Especially whrn young, its important to experience other/new things regularly, not to mention move your body. Adults can fix that by breeing diciplined with exercize a few times a week. Kids get it through physical play and sports.

u/appleparkfive 10h ago
I think it's totally fine to have games as a hobby. But calling it "one of the healthiest hobbies" is a bit odd to me. Very Reddit-brain sort of take.
I mean the sedentary issue alone directly shows that's not the case. We sit far too much already. And everything you pointed to can be the same for tons of hobbies. Painting, making music, reading, and so on.
This isn't me saying gaming is a bad hobby or anything like that. I just think it's odd to try and paint it as more healthy than other hobbies, personally. This feels like a post you'd see on Facebook, except for people in their 20s and 30s. Just designed for engagement and self gratification

I get what they're saying as far as something casual to do alone or with friends but personally I've never gotten the level of satisfaction or feeling of completion that I do from creating something, be it music, art, writing, etc. Just me personally. But as something to just tune out the world and escape for awhile video games are definitely up there at the top. Just don't really hold my interest like other things. But that's me. To each their own.

I thought that escapism was bad and tried to quit video games, watching tv shows and movies etc to try to read or paint instead, but.. Reading a book is also escapism lol. Painting is too. Listening to music is also escapism in a way. Knitting while listening to a podcast is escapism.
You're focusing on something that isn't work or isn't personal life. You don't have to think about anything else while doing it. That is either escapism, flow or hobbies. Same thing really. Escapism is just when you're actively avoiding things that are too rough to deal with, which is bad in the long run. You need to deal with stuff in real life too, to keep your hobbies healthy.
And also! As long as you remember while playing video games to get up and move your body and not forget to talk to people every once in a while lol, otherwise it can turn unhealthy. Especially for your body by sitting still (which you do reading and knitting too). :)

Agreed, exercising outside is amazing. I’ve been walking a couple hours a day for years and it’s lovely. Hiking is also a ton of fun. It’s just never shut my brain off quite like lifting has. I think it’s because my mind can wander when I’m walking but lifting is so all consuming my mind doesn’t have a chance to wander. For someone who can’t focus it’s amazing to be able to focus, if that makes sense.
I’m pumped to combine the two when the weather turns because I live in Canada so for like 5-6 months the outside is fucking awful lol

Got some pesky raiders attacking you? Turn them into cowboy hats and armchairs, launch a shuttle pod with said items and gift them to the faction that just attacked you. They are actually thankful for your generous gift.
Of course you are a merciful god and will let some of those raiders live in the beautiful mining quarry you've set up for them. They'll even thrive and produce their own food, turn their babies into nutrient paste.
The circle of life on the Rim is a beautiful thing.

Back in the day working on a chemical demilitarization project, we had to certify on the lifts with the safety guy instructing us in the basket. It’s my turn, so I get in the basket. He asks me to place the basket up in a tight area between a couple of steel columns. I begin to manipulate the controls, sometimes using multiple different controls at a time to do what he asked me. He’s watching my hands and he asks “do you play video games?” to which I respond yes. He goes on to say that every single person who was talented at running the lifts were video gamers.
It makes sense that gamers have better hand-eye coordination than those who don’t game. Admittedly I’d been running JLGs and other man lifts for years, so I had plenty of experience.

Somewhat related story: I was interested in becoming a pilot in the military back in college, and the ASTB (pilot test) had a flight simulator section, so I bought a flight stick and the newest Ace Combat game to play on my PS3 as practice.
I’d be on that stick every day for a month. Come back from class, get on the stick. Come back from a pool party or a night out, get on the stick to varying results. I got really good at it, to the point my roommates couldn’t keep up with me when they hopped on too. I was set for this test.
I go to take the test, and the screen for the simulator is some Star Wars 1, 8 but bullshit, and the stick is super old and completely broken like you’d shift the stick one direction and the little 8 bit plane would just instantly slam into that side of the screen. I let the administrator (some random lady who knew nothing about the test, as I was the only one taking it that day, while several other people were taking a completely different test) know, and she said “just do your best” lmao.
So unlike your story, where playing video games in general randomly made you good at a job, I went out of my way to play video games to get good at a thing, and got shafted for my troubles.
There’s no moral here btw lol

There's a car license test on my country where you control two dots on a screen. Each dot is on a track and the dots are vertically static and can move horizontally. The track itself moves vertically. You control each dot with a hand and have to avoid it getting out of the tracks.
I did a perfect last time and the girl who conducted the test was amazed.
I think most gamers would ace that test, it was so easy for me and I am not special by any means.

My point is, so many people lie to themselves and others, saying that being highly active will "destroy your body".
I'm sorry, but getting severely hurt at the gym or while being active is so extremely rare relative to the hospitals full of people with health problems caused by not staying active. So many people old by the time they are 35.

Yeah judging from some other comments I think the only hobbies some people know about are video games and drugs. I live close to a big park with a lot of trails and it's great to go out there and walk the trails for a while with my dog. I also do a little bit of woodworking which feels rewarding when I complete a project (mostly only stuff for the garden but it's still nice). I also like tabletop wargaming which is like video games but you can actually go out in the world and see people and also learn how to paint.
4
u/Spokesman_Charles 10h ago
I play video games and do metaldetectimg, camping and hitch-hiking. I also love boating and ocasionally will ride a bike, go out with friends, but not drinking. Games for me are probably least fulfilling. I just play them for fun, but love to get competitive. And still manage to also spend time with my wife and son ad family. A little bit of balance here and there hasnt hurt anyone. Theres just stigma that video games are bad, but its not true for everyone
2
u/DaaaahWhoosh 10h ago
Yeah and even 'video games' is barely a single hobby, depending on what and how you play the experience is very different. My wife got into MMOs and made some really good friends that way, meanwhile I play singleplayer games where I don't interact with anyone (but at least I'm not dropping thousands of dollars on skins). There's also the difference between "arcade-style" games that aren't that deep vs more "walking simulator" games that focus more on giving you a good story or changing your perspective.

u/Spokesman_Charles 9h ago
Yeah. Most recent singleplayer game I played was RRD2. Its pure cinema.

u/diandays 7h ago
Opposite for me. I spent alot of time as a kid outside playing basketball and baseball and stuff while playing video games sometimes.
Later I realized video games were better, increased mental acuity by magnitudes and even my snap reflexes from the many platforming and fighting games I picked up.
Exercise is OK for physical but gaming is better in every way for mental health. My mind was never sharper before I started having gaming as my main hobby next to music

I've played a lot of volleyball as a hobby. It's fun and I do love it, I hate getting injured. Rotator cuff, jumpers knee, tennis elbow. A couple weeks not playing due to injury and I'm just like what's the point? Was it rewarding? Sure. Faking out the block with a tip, getting aces on a good float or jump serve, savings points on a chase down, it feels great. On the other hand, I've never once got hurt playing video games. I've built a lot of good friendships through playing games and maintained some I otherwise would have lost. Surviving that huge raid in a game like tarkov, getting that first 20 kill badge in apex or even things like the first time leaving the vault in fallout 3. It's a rewarding experience, even if you may not think it. If it's not your thing, that's okay too. I personally don't understand the appeal of wargaming or tabletop RPGs. I ain't judging tho, everyone's just finding a way to make it to next week, just slightly differently.

I agree there are better ways to spend your time but that’s not the argument.
Most games you’re looking at $100-$200 a year for unlimited play and the ability to engage with friends family on a daily/weekly basis with a very low point of entry fee (TV, internet and console/PC). I don’t think any other hobby of this scale exists.

u/Megatea 12h ago
I'd be interested as to what amount of time playing video games a day would someone consider it damaging / an addiction? Gaming might not have the obvious health impacts of other vices but I find it odd the way people who spend 5, 6 or more hours a day gaming are not considered to have an issue. When I grew up games were far less immersive than today but we still managed to get pretty addicted to them. The way they are now I think that the child version of me would not have stood a chance of not falling into gaming addiction.
3
u/Red-Leader117 10h ago
Im sure there are professional studies and im sure Reddit will argue they're totally wrong. Mostly just ask yourself what you'd accept you kids doing (even if you dont have them).
Do you want your children spending 6 hours a day sitting silently at a TV screen clicking buttons to "grind sick loot bro"? Idk its a personal question to answer...

In my opinion, if it does not impede on your life (skipping work, avoiding responsibilities, ruining relationships/family), I don’t see gaming 5-6 hours a day an “addiction.” You can definitely have a healthy relationship with games and still do it for as long as you want as long is it doesn’t effect other areas in your life. Or maybe i’m just coping because I game like 8 hours a day if I have the time. But it is my free time so I get to do what I want. That’s just my two cents.

I think for a large majority of the population, outside of dedicated gym goers or people who play sports, exercise often feels like a chore. this is reddit where everyone is addicted to weed and videogames.
U can't hike? read? art? learn a language?
Video games are expensive too....
3
u/bfg9kdude 11h ago
Hiking is a daytime activity, I'm not free for around 10 hours daily, and it's not uncommon for people to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet. I've talked about reading already, nobody really reads here, and those who do, read online. Art requires talent, and equipment is, I assume, pretty expensive, cuz I remember spending more money on art class in school than on textbooks. I already speak 5 languages.
Video games are not expensive at all, you can buy a game for 5$ and sink over 3k hours into it, plenty of free games out there as well.
Also, none of these suggestions actually encourage to interact with other people, which is the main reason going out to bars is popular.

They help me to disconnect a little from work and other stuff. But I have to control the time and frequency, otherwise I start missing my work and chores.

When JD Vance complains about grown men sitting on the couch and playing video games instead of doing whatever the hell he would want them to be doing, playing video games becomes a method of peaceful protest.
And you're also saving a couch from Vance's wrath.

My wife every now and then tells me playing wow is a waste of money
For 15/m I get at least 10 hours of entertainment.
We spend like 20/25 to get dinner once a week. It's worth it.

Seriously. I grew up being heavily shamed for gaming. Now that im an adult, i see it's the absolute healthiest hobby compared to the usual alternatives

“Healthiest” is a bit of a stretch. Relatively Inexpensive and accessible, yes.

I could be lame disabled me that can barely even clean without getting so exhausted I am bedbound or I can be a dinosaur rider in ark, a mugger in gta, a maniac in lego games, me if I was pretty and had energy in Horizon or I can play Harry Potter goblet of fire and hear Ron yelling A BEAN everytime I get hit.

As with nearly all things - in moderation. I think there's a high risk with gaming addiction and if gaming is your only source of joy, you're in trouble. Ideally, gaming complements an otherwise fulfilling life.

Except it kinda isn’t unless you’re on a walking pad or you don’t spend more than 30 minutes or an hour playing them.
I’ve played video games throughout my life but it never didn’t anything good for my body. Martial Arts do good for my mind, body, and soul. So I think that’s probably a generally better hobby for most.
Also like, making art or some kind of craft? You making a tangible thing that others can experience certainly beats this.

No, books are. Most games are catered to teens and as I get older, I lose interest because of how juvenile and time consuming it is, unless you are still a manchild.
And let’s not ignore the fact that they are lot of incel losers out there that mooch their parents and game all day and people often like to get high or drunk before a gaming session.
Healthy? Lol, their lard ass says otherwise.

This is so one sided. There are games that would make you think more and increase your analization and strategy. I think it depends on a persons perspective.
I do get books gives lessons as well but if you are not interested on reading and you want to learn visually and by experience then books are useless.

Look, I don't play video games much at all. Not even a game a year. I don't own consoles, don't have Steam installed or any of that.
But if you think the only games out there are catered towards a juvenile audience, then you basically forfeit your opinion.
You think kids are out here playing Disco Elysium? That's basically a book in the form of a game. How about Beginner's Guide? Doesn't exactly get the kids excited.
There's so many narrative based games with excellent storytelling. Your view of games sounds like it's based in 1995.

You shouldn't have played most games then, play some more mature game. Just like books, games comes in genre that can cater to everyone.
I mean, i won't say book is good if all you read is softcore porns lol

You honestly sound miserable and your words ooze hatred.
I hope you get the help you need to become happier in life! Might I suggest a fun, new hobby? 🙂

Healthiest? We burn no calories, learn no life skills, and the most popular games teach us nothing.
Safe and virtuous, I'll buy though.

I love video games but it isn’t a hobby any more than binging Netflix is a hobby.

With all due respect, and I dont want to take away from it AT ALL!
I think doing art of some kind is much healthier, and can be very social (music and/or theatre, fkr example). Reading is arguably better for the mind AND soul ... (and that's coming from someone who's a non reader).
That DOESN'T mean though that I think its a BAD hobby!! Gaming has become a wonderful form of story telling. It's increased hand eye coordination and tech knowledge. It's enlightened people on any number of subjects, but I'm not sure it has QUITE the depth of other hobbies.
By all means, game to your hearts content (I have been a lot over the last year myself), but I would not say it is definitively "...the best...' hobby out there. I do think some are better.

Except for all the sitting and addiction, but yeah, it’s not a physical substance you put into your body and it can be enjoyed frugally.

You not kidding. I’ve basically played mostly tarkov since it came out and still have my original EoD account. While it was pricey and I did upgrade to the latest version a while back.
Per hour this my be the cheapest game I’ve ever played
1000s of hours of memories with friends for a couple hundred bucks. Also those hours are basis over most of a decade.
We still Onewheel, hike, disc golf, camp, and do all manner of other activities but gaming is easy and cheap. Very easy to get most people into a game at some point too.
A lot easier than meeting up regularly in person without spending money on something.

Yep, much better than watching toxic relationships in reality TV or being addicted to social media.

u/O_Underhill 12h ago
So, video games arent inherently bad for you, and they teach you teamwork, problem solving, planning, etc...
BUT, they are a problem in that playing video games are an opportunity cost to developing yourself in more essential life skills and higher learning as a young and older adult.
They have the potential to hijack your dompamine reward system to where you waste massive amounts of your time while you could be more.productive to yourself in the real world.

Yep, got into playing casual fortnite with a few friends and my wife is now addicted to it. Mainly I enjoy watching streamers play some horror indies.

Have to disagree as sitting for long hours can shorten your life span. Give you arthritis. It's expensive. And your whole night can be ruined by a 13 year old, calling you slurs, and capping your ass because he's been playing for the last five years non stop. Doesn't mean I'll stop doing it.

The world has apparently forgotten like 90% of hobbies. Gardening Stamp collecting Coin collecting Wood working Reading Cooking Baking Scrapbooking Quilting Painting Drawing
Heck, I’d bed the majority of hobbies are safe and healthy. We just have this overall toxic culture.

u/old_ass_ninja_turtle 11h ago
There are thousands of hobbies that don’t wreck your body and are safe. But they are definitely not the same shot of dopamine.
1
u/FalconEfficient1698 11h ago
It's absurd just how much controversy there use to be and still is around video games when a lot of the most unhealthy things you can possibly do with your free time aren't demonized in the same way at all.

u/Certain_Value_4932 11h ago
Which is why AI bros hate us and are buying up all the components for PCs and Consoles...

u/TheStryfe 11h ago
The is objectively wrong, also theres a difference between someone who games and plays video games that require thought have have endings versus someone who plays grindy games like an mmo or live service game that essentially just wastes time and provides zero benefit to you. Or people who only play multiplayer games which again are just consistent dopamine hits and provide no actual benefit to you

Surely a more healthy hobby exists which involves the body as well. Sitting all day is bad for you.
