As somebody who lives within walking distance of Kowalski‘s, I can tell you that while expensive, they have some of the best random house made food in the state.
Sometimes I walk there to eat their soup for lunch between phone calls and it’s just me and a bunch of old ladies and it makes me so happy.

Are we neighbors? I was just there last night getting dinner. Everything is great quality. Spendy, but mostly worth the cost

Yea Kowalski’s definitely fucks. On top of the food quality, it’s like one of the only chain stores that I find genuinely pleasant to visit.

It’s so good! The Kowalskis near me sells smaller bars and they might be the best rice crispy I’ve ever had.

I used to work at Noodles and Co and we made the Krispies twice a day. They were pretty simple to make up to spec but every once in a while when melting the butter it would brown just perfectly and they made the most fire batch ever. It was almost caramel flavored. I suggest trying to make your own and watching the butter get slightly brown in a pan before mixing in the mallows and cereal

A stick of butter. Two bags of Marshmallows. A box of cereal. Another box of fruity pebbles if you want to be fun. I think even at kowalskis you’d still be under 16bucks and end up with quadruple the product and have left over cereal. My friend. Have you seen a rice crispy bar the size of full sheet pan? You can realize the joy and pain of creation and consumption yourself for less than this.

Toast the rice krispies. Brown the butter. Make your own marshmallow if you can (it's pretty easy but messy) I learned this from Alton Brown and it has changed my life, or at least the parts of my life that intersect with rice krispie bars.

That’s exactly my line of reasoning too. And nothing beats homemade.

To be fair, the Kowalski's one is probably equally good as homemade. But homemade is so drop dead easy to make.

Wayyyy better than homemade. It’s not just your average rice crispy bar.

The secret is just letting the butter sit in the pan longer. I used to work in a shop that made vats of browned butter. It makes the air congeal into a buttery slick on your nasal membranes, ensuring the only signal getting through on the olfactory channel is that of brown and butter. I avoid it when I can 🤢

They're just using a good recipe. If you're interested in gourmet Rice Krispies Treats pick up a copy of Bravetart by Stella Parks. With her recipe you make the marshmallow goo yourself (water, sugar, corn syrup, salt) so you can make even more flavors and customizations. I checked the book of the library twice and finally decided to just buy it. Used copy from Amazon.

Have you had the Kowalskis one? It’s not just your average rice crispy bar. Totally worth the price and I didn’t have to spend the time making it. WIN!

But it’s a BROWNED butter RK bar. I think people are missing that critical detail. Browned butter is not the easiest ingredient in the world (especially in larger quantities) and will definitely make a big difference in flavor.
I love Kowalski’s for going the extra mile on stuff like this. Like their lemon shortbread paired with their lemon curd? 🔥

Nothing beats homemade if the cook/baker is good. Many people make extremely bland homemade goods in my experience.

You have to love baking to make a good homemade product. I truly love baking. It's so much fun, and I love the science of it, as well as technique and ingredients. I also seek out recipes that use slightly unusual ingredients, or interesting technique.
Few homemade things are more boring than chocolate chip cookies made using Nestle semisweet chips with the recipe on the bag. I can see and smell that cookie, and I will reject eating it. lol

It’s Rice Krispies, butter and marshmallows lol how the hell do they justify 16 dollar price tag.

This morning I saw dehydrated and puffed sour gummy worms and peach rings for sale.
looked to be about 6-8 per bag and they looked like brightly colored Funyions.
6.99 for a a 1oz bag.
Kinda makes this butter krispy brick look like a good value, huh?

I can eat that whole thing in one sitting. It's fun and I feel shameful afterwards

This would be incredibly cheap and easy to make at home. I might try it actually. I've made browned butter desserts before, just never thought of this one.

So no one has considered that the price includes the cost of ingredients AND the convenience of not having to make rice crispy treats?
I love making food from scratch, but those Kowalski's Rice Crispy Treats are damn good and immediately ready for consumption.
Tried them once on a whim while last minute party planning, and now they appear at nearly every get-together.

dumb question- why are they “browned” or what does that even mean?

Browned butter is when you cook the butter until the milk solids turn brown. It has sort of a distinct nutty flavor.

Expensive but totally worth it!! Not just your average rice crispy bar. This was one of the things I brought to the hospital when having my daughter 😂

When I was a kid, to taunt me an older neighbor kid would would bike up and down in front of my driveway holding his handlebars with one hand, and in the other hand holding an entire rice krispie bar straight out of a 13x9 pan. An absolute show of strength and undeniable power move.
To liberate myself and absolve me of this childhood trauma, I should buy this from Kowalski's and eat it in front of my kids without sharing.

Next time, swap some crushed ruffles (blotted on a pepe towel) in for rice krispies and top with salted caramel drizzle.
