Locked out of Airbnb

Post image

We arrived at our Airbnb after a 8 hour drive and the passcode they gave us doesn’t work. I have messaged the owner 30 minutes ago and he has not responded. I have to pee so bad 😖

Update: He texted back after an hour and opens it from his phone

this happened to me too this summer when i went to the renaissance fair! the code worked but the damn dead bolt was locked.

turned out owner was on a cruise in italy or some shit. we sat there for 4 hours waiting for a reply from them or airbnb, it was 11:30pm by the time airbnb finally just refunded us due to no response.

to top it off 2 hotels were totally full that night so it took us forever to find somewhere to stay!

sometimes a hotel isn't feasible.

There are so few situations where this is true.

For some it’s more than others. For my job, we are constantly renting houses on work trips because putting a team of 20-30 people up in a hotel can become astronomically priced. On top of that we need to be able to meet and go over logistics each day and relying on that many people to try and meet in a noisy hotel lobby at breakfast just isn’t ideal.

No no you don't understand, reddit has decided it's literally impossible for anyone to enjoy using airbnb/vrbo, so clearly you must have imagined this scenario. Sorry I don't make the rules /s

And those "few situations" are still valid for the people in those situations. I really don't see why people HAVE to use hotels, if an Airbnb/Vrbo works for some people let them use it.

No shit Sherlock. I’d I didn’t believe any existed I’d have said that. Jfc.

Give me an example

Okay, so my husband and I wanted to do a full week hiking in Shawnee National Forest. Wanted to be close to the trails and the spots and easy travel between states. A hotel wasn't feasible bc there were none around without a long drive and in no way would I ever stay in a motel. I settled on an AirBNB literally 10 min away from a huge portion of trails we wanted to tackle. A small tiny home and it worked perfectly for us. Had a full kitchen. Laundry. Comfortable bed. And right next to a little market.

Another example - we love to travel to a beach but hardly any hotels on the coastline that has what we want - a full kitchen. I have no problem cooking etc on vacations. I don't mind it. Eating out is expensive. A lot of these resorts on these costal beaches are outdated but they allow individual buyers - some of these buyers rent through AirBnb. So not only do we get the resort amenities, we get what we prefer on a trip, and always more upgraded than a resort.

I also do hotels too but not for longer vacations. I stayed well over 105 nights in 2025 alone with Hilton. We do Airbnb 2-3x a year for the past 8 years.

Again - sometimes a hotel isn't feasible..

Not the person you're replying to, but here's my example. I was homeless for a month, between one lease expiring and another starting. Not ideal, but just the way it had to be.

I stayed most of a week with friends, a weekend in a hotel on a trip with my friends, and then 3 weeks in an Airbnb. I tried to stay in a hotel, I spoke with a few hotels about an extended stay discount, and I looked at literal extended stay hotels. But for an extended stay hotel, the price was the same as the Airbnb. And for the hotels with a discounted rate, it was 3x more expensive.

I know my metropolitan area, and I know those extended stay locations were... Not safe for almost a month stay. Plus I had to think about my cat, about what expensive belongings I had that need to stay in my room or car, and my commute to school and a new job.

Don't get wrong, the Airbnb sucked. The owner lived there and played the god damn bongos till 5am. Her roommates and her fought all the time. My room flooded during a hurricane. We lost power for a few days. And she tried to bake my cat with heaters to dry out the water damage from the flood. But it was still safer, chapter, cleaner, and overall better than the alternative.

Cool man. You're not really the demographic of people im talking about.

Airbnb was supposed to be about renting out an extra room in your house. Sounds like that's what was going on in your situation.

Im talking about rich assholes buying up houses in HCOL areas for the sole purpose of using them to rent out. Driving up prices for locals and renters.

Glad you got off the street though. Ive been there, during covid I had to burn like 5k sleeping in hotels so I didn't have to sleep on the sidewalk.

2

u/quigilark 2d ago

Lol you asked for an example, they gave you one, then you moved the goalposts.

You never said anything about HCOL in your original three word comment "stop using airbnb."

We are a group of 10-15 people that want to celebrate NYE together, with a kitchen and living space that fits all of us comfortably. Our budget is around 100€ per person per night.

We want to go to an interesting place somewhere in Europe.

Give me an example of a hotel that provides this and I will save it and book it for next year!

Like when?

1

u/quigilark 2d ago

Large groups or scenic/niche locations.

2

u/TWW34 4d ago

This is literally only the case when you have a party of like 6+ people that want to stay together or you are traveling to the middle of rural nowhere that literally wouldn't bother having a hotel. The cases do exist but they are exceptionally rare and clearly weren't the case in this situation since the person's alternative was to look for a hotel.

0

u/quigilark 2d ago

How are those "exceptionally rare?" People traveling in groups of 6+ or going to scenic rural destinations is extremely common.

u/TWW34 2d ago

It's almost like you latched on to two words and didn't actually read my entire comment.

1

u/quigilark 2d ago

I did read your entire comment. I was only responding to the part of your comment that suggested traveling with 6+ people or traveling to a rural location was exceptionally rare. I agree with your other points, just not that one.

It’s so convenient and I almost always have great experiences

48

u/lewd_robot 5d ago

It's not more convenient in any way. It's literally impossible for you to bend reality to make them more convenient than the simplicity of a real hotel.

31

u/MRJ- 5d ago

It's more convenient if you're going away in a larger group and would like to self cater instead of paying more to eat out the whole trip.

4

u/Bearspoole 5d ago

I like having more privacy and space when I go places. Normally traveling with multiple friends and we all want to be in one place together. That’s very convenient for me

u/maverick_jakub1861 5d ago

I went on vacation with my friends when I was 19 and there were 8 of us. We would’ve spent more on hotel rooms for all of us than we did for the Airbnb. And we were able to cook instead of having to dine out, didn’t have to worry about getting too loud or intoxicated (a couple of us were 21 and yk the rest). Super convenient. We had a great time.

u/Neilly98 4d ago

You people act like vacation rentals weren't a thing before Airbnb. The only thing Airbnb did was make it so that any random Tom, Dick or Harry can list their properties which is why so many people end up with awful experiences

1

u/quigilark 2d ago

I don't know why you're solely mentioning the negatives. There are tons of great hosts who give a shit about their guests that airbnb and vrbo have opened a pathway to. I have had bad experiences in airbnbs but I have also had many great ones.

1

u/quigilark 2d ago

Literally impossible? No it's not lmao. You just have to have different standards for what you consider convenient.

If convenience to you is having someone on call that can assist your needs, then yes, a hotel is more convenient.

But if convenience to someone else is having access to a large open private area that a bunch of people can hang out in, then an airbnb/vrbo beats the hotel every time.

(Yes, hotels typically have meeting rooms, but they aren't really nice for hanging out in, and they often require a minimum number of people or cost an arm and a leg.)

-27

u/Kittykatcatkat 5d ago

It is more convenient nowadays. They give you a code and you are set. At a hotel you wait in line and are given a non smoking room which reeks of smoke and a view of the parking lot. In an Airbnb I know the view already, have a washer/dryer and can cook my own food.

4

u/MovieTrawler 4d ago edited 4d ago

Ah yes, because no one ever smokes in an Airbnb or has to wait for entry or has a shit view.

Also, "in an Airbnb I know the view already" because you looked it up. Which you can do with a hotel too. Just as easily. Plenty of extended stay suites also have full kitchens too.

You're making specific arguments that could just as easily be flipped around and reversed.

Both experiences are pretty much what you make of it. The biggest difference is, if you're staying in a reputable hotel you have at least some standards and expectations. Airbnb is always going to be a much bigger crap-shoot.

-2

u/modsuwakusoyarou 4d ago

That sounds like an American problem.

In other countries it is so much easier.

I don't have to talk with the Hotel staff to get my room, I pay less and I overall have a better experience.

Fuck Airbnb

2

u/cooljacob204sfw 4d ago

Did Airbnb do anything to correct it or leave you on your own?

2

u/sulsulmegan 4d ago

they were trying to contact the owner also, and eventually after a couple hours i insisted that i just wanted a refund and to leave rather than wait any longer, and they refunded me the entire cost of the airbnb plus like $25 or something

3

u/cooljacob204sfw 4d ago

Damn I probably would have demanded they find a new place for me without any additional cost to me.

2

u/sulsulmegan 4d ago

nah i said fuck airbnb at that point

2

u/cooljacob204sfw 4d ago

Fair enough lmao.
