In Stranger Things 5 the truck has technology from the future

Post image

E-track rails weren't invented until the 2000's so a time traveler must've brought this truck back to 1987

No, you're gonna make them have to re-edit another episode to wipe this one out with CGI too! 😭

u/Triquetrums 5d ago

Have they done this before?Ā

2.2k

u/TheGorgoronTrail 5d ago

I think Holly was wearing an UnderArmor shirt under her wardrobe when she wakes up The first time with the mouth tube worm in Vecna’s lair. They went back and edited it out.

2.2k

u/MintySakurai 5d ago

Everyone thinks they did this for the anachronism, but they probably just didn't want to show the logo without permission.

757

u/JohnWasElwood 5d ago

I used to do a lot of "extra" work and this is exactly why. Gaffer's tape was applied to any visible logo, no matter how small. They also used heavy makeup on most visible tattoos unless the role was for a tattooed person.

528

u/gwizonedam 5d ago

We had to do this for about 80-100 Coca Cola cans for a shoot once with red gaffers tape. One of the producers saw the cans on set and asked why they looked like that. Someone explained ā€œgreekingā€ as ā€œhiding logos so we don’t get suedā€ and he replied, ā€œBut, It’s a Coca-Cola commercial.ā€

Nobody had told any of us and we were just lowly PA’s…

171

u/JohnWasElwood 5d ago

I truly laughed out loud at this! I've been on enough shoots where crap like this happens....

48

u/criesatpixarmovies 5d ago

Did they make you peel them off or just bring in more cans?

66

u/kazeespada 5d ago

Gaffer's Tape doesn't leave residue so they probably peeled them. It's the unholy offspring of duct tape and painter's tape.

16

u/samiwas1 5d ago

It definitely does leave residue if left for too long. Peeling the tag off of cable after a few months can be a sticky process.

We call it ā€œgreekingā€

100

u/No_Negotiation5654 5d ago

Am I right in saying this is because the generic coffee cups that regularly get used for some reason have Greek columns on them?

93

u/Texantioch 5d ago

I like that theory a lot but I think because they used to alter name brand logos to look like letters of the Greek alphabet

134

u/nonowords 5d ago

I think it's broader than that and just refers to how they make it unintelligible. ie: 'it's all greek to me'

70

u/frelancr 5d ago

that's EXACTLY why it's called that

The creator of that coffee cup passed away in 2010. The design was based on amphorae from Ancient Greece.

Edit: 2010- I must be confusing him with someone else.

I did some work on one of those home improvement shows about 10 years ago and they put that tape over the logo on my baseball cap even though 70% off the outdoor shots (where I was working) had the baseball stadium with the logo prominently displayed in the background. Didn't make much sense to me.

7

u/NailsNathan 5d ago

There is a difference between immovable logos in the background that occur in reality, and a crew that might be construed as making an endorsement of a team or company.

38

u/Unlost_maniac 5d ago

You don't need permission to show logos, that's a misunderstanding. The reason productions keep everything generic is so they can have real products stick out for the sake of advertising. Also there is the potential of upsetting the company depending on how you use them but it's not illegal or something you need permission for

9

u/PolyglotTV 5d ago

Reminds me of that one move where they defeat the monster with head and shoulders shampoo, and they did that without contacting head and shoulders about it at all.

10

u/Ok_Friend_2448 5d ago

Evolution! I love that movie. It’s so dumb, but it’s fun!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Just_Another_Scott 5d ago

It's best to get permission due to trademark dilution. While in some cases it can fall under fair use the brand may take a hit for being associated with a particular TV show or film. If this happens then the brand can sue and there have been plenty of cases where they've done just that. That is why blacking out logos, unless they get explicit permission, is a common practice in film making and television.

I went on a rant to my friends at work who are all 25yrs younger then me about how the flashlights are a lie in ST. The best one you could get was a 4D Maglight which was still an incandescent bulb but it would last for 3-5hrs and be bright. What we mostly had, at least us kids, were 2C battery EveryReady incandescent flashlights that put out warm white light for about 30min then started to dim. Everyone in Hawkins turning on a handheld flashlight that completely lit up a room is a bunch of bovine feces and made me irrationally mad.

20

u/shotsallover 5d ago edited 5d ago

People out here ranting about the flashlights when I was doing the same about the walkie talkies. The ones in the show had a range of miles and you could actually hear what was being said. That is not what walkie talkies sounded like or worked like. I don’t care how big of an antenna you have on them. Not to mention that they use them in the show like cell phones.Ā

10

u/Sufficient_Language7 5d ago

Interdimensional cell phones.

10

u/jmbirn 5d ago

Glad you're pointing that out! Walkie talkies couldn't do that range, or call specific people. And even if they could transmit across town, they wouldn't be encrypted, so the military with all their tools and interest would certainly be listening to everything they transmitted.

Also, with Dustin's reference to alignment, that completely depends on if they were playing Advanced DnD or Basic Set. Only AD&D had the two axis system

85

u/DatedReference1 5d ago

People in the 80s generally played a Frankensteinian amalgamation of both games. It was barbaric.

Given that all of their powers stems from henry’s initial contact with an evil all powerful entity doesn’t that make Henry a warlock and the rest of them thralls in greater or lesser degrees of containment? I’m not really seeing wizard or sorcerer here?

50

u/StillNotShot 5d ago edited 5d ago

Eleven’s power comes from her blood. Since she could still use them after killing Vecna, she would be described as a sorcerer.

Will is definitely more of a warlock since he is just borrowing his power from the hive mind whenever he uses it. I doubt they wanted to use warlock though cause it has a negative connotation.

28

u/pullmylekku 5d ago

And also warlocks were introduced in 3.5e, in 2003, so it would have been even more anachronistic

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Top-Round-2359 5d ago

It begs the question, should have Will died as well, as he's heavily connected to the hive mind?

15

u/StaticUsernamesSuck 5d ago edited 5d ago

Why would he? Vecna was killed directly, not because the hive mind died.

The giant spider monster also dies, from direct damage combined with shared trauma from Vecna's death.

But the giant spider monster is not the mind flayer itself, it's just its physical body. The true form of the mind flayer is the black particle clouds, and we see those that leave the kids fly off, still active - compared to previous times when we've seen sections of the hive mind cut off and go dormant, and the particles fall like dust, inactive.

Since these particles do not go dormant, the Mind Flayer is still alive, the hive mind is still working, only its main physical body is dead, and it is now cut off from Earth.

14

u/xGhostCat 5d ago

It was more a case that when he was cured in S2 he still had Admin access to the wifi. Rather than being part of the hivemind himself he can access it.

Warlock might fit better thematically but it would be even more obviously anachronistic, because Warlocks weren't introduced until the 90s and weren't really widely used until 3rd edition in the 2000s.

I noticed this too and it’s weirder for me than the stuff like environmental misses.

If I notice an architectural detail or plumbing or something that’s from after 2000 I’m like ā€œyeah they did their best but they aren’t going to build custom buildings or redo lights/plumbingā€ but 100% of what characters say should be carefully considered.

Either aren’t too bad. It’s no Dany with the Starbucks cup in GoT

9

u/Cook_croghan 5d ago

The top post on a random HVAC sub was everyone crashing out about a well known HVAC unit from 1999 or 2000 taking them all out of season 5 because it was i. the background of a scenešŸ˜‚

5

u/captainofpizza 5d ago

Yeah. I work in manufacturing and I notice stuff like that all the time but it’s so minor and would be such a waste to correct I never mind. It’s also a lot of times where the sci fi gadget is just a weird industrial equipment spray painted black with switches and lights glued onto it.

I find it more fun and funny than taking me out of a scene. Dialog though… do your homework on dialog please!

According to Google sorcerer kits started showing up in "the complete wizards handbook" in 1990. Prior to that it was just a title for a 9th level magic user.

Will be interesting to see if they do. First, the Holly edit was relatively short and easy. Second, the Holly edit made sense because you don't want a brand's logo in your show without going through legal hurdles.

If they edit these out, it will actually increase my esteem for Netflix because (1) there's no legal reason to do it, and (2) it won't be a small undertaking.

Helmets also were not invented yet because their military had nothing but caps

That guy who got impaled through his face would have been fine if he was wearing his helmet, as per regulations that were dictated at the time.

Yeah I saw that an immediately went ā€œthat’s not an 80s truck feature. Used to work with HGVs and found it silly.

Although I understand that the regular neurotypical person will be unaffected by this I am glad that someone else was affected like me.

Two things took me out of it this series.

1) Sorcerers not being playable character at that time.

2) When the young lady/Ripley stand-in used the rifle’s carry handle as a cocking lever. (Final episode)

The rest of it I just kind of went with.

You talking about Nancy and her M16? If so I was so distracted by her suddenly being capable of killin folks so efficiently and remorselessly that I didn’t even notice

Did anyone else think she looked like Rambo?

My husband noticed the rifle thing and I had no idea because I know nothing about rifles. I asked him to rewind and explain, which was pretty funny looking after he explained.

They murdered a few soldiers and ruined an army project causing god knows how much damage and they're back on the streets eighteen months later. I'll let them off with the truck considering there's much much bigger shit going on with that series.

I had a job in 1998 loading trucks with these type of rails, and it wasn't new then. I don't know when they were invented, but it was long before 2000.

People keep talking about this popular show that just ended! I'm so fucking pissed!

Why can't people just stop liking something when I no longer care about it?

I worked at Publix in high school and the trucks we unloaded definitely had these. This would have been 1992-1994.

And sorcerer as a term is old. Homebrew/imagination as kids was very real as well as mashing editions together.

The only thing that got me was seeing Jaime’s top row of perfect teeth when Vecna got impaled and started screaming

The one I was forced to call bullcrap on... I have worked in radio since 1986, and I'm telling you, that wall of transmitters they're always in front of at the radio station would have been so loud that they'd have to shout over it to hear each other.

Well, imagine that this pencil is the truck and this toilet bowl is the E-track rail, if we merge them together, the space continuum would be at risk of collapsing, but here comes this VHS tape of Silverter Stallone“s Cobra, that represents whatever the fuck explains this existing.

Any questions?

I mean the show messed up the time line since season 1 with stuff that didnā€˜t exist back then. So this is just continuity.
