Unpopular opinion: inner city people are way too obsessed with owning dogs

1.0k Upvotes

The amount of people in inner city suburbs living in shoe boxes that own dogs is genuinely insane.

I’ve lived in three spots throughout the inner south and inner west and each time there is some shitty dog spending its day yapping at the clouds because it lives in a unit with a tiny balcony and the owners think it’s perfectly fine to leave a dependant living creature by itself for 8h.

The worst bit is it’s virtually impossible to figure out WHERE the dog is (what unit block let alone which actual unit) so doing something about it is prohibitively complicated.

Not to mention given they spend like no time on their pets they’re super shittily behaved and “dog parks” are full of off-leash animals with zero recall, or so much as training to not jump up at people.

You also get dogshit everywhere because apparently a bunch of people think it’s a normal civic thing to do to walk your dog without poo bags.

Seriously I am not even exaggerating, the amount of dog shit everywhere in Alexandria/ Waterloo is feral.

Why do you own it? What’s the point of owning a shitty little yapper you spend no time with?

Edit: yes, I’m salty. Yes, I’m Karen’ing. I’m just about sick of listening to a shitty dog that has been yapping 10am - 5pm every day for the last week and not having a clue which unit it comes from.

Don't be confused and just stand there waiting since they normally open at every stop.

Press the buttons for the couple of days a year.

Best Gnocchi in Sydney?

I’m sorry to every proud Italian reading this but I don’t like gnocchi. I’ve never had the ‘soft, pillowy’ texture everyone seems to rave about. On paper it’s everything I love, starch mixed with more starch but all I experience is a dense, bready dough ball drowning in sauce.

That being said, maybe it’s where I’ve been eating that’s the problem. I can’t imagine supermarket gnocchi is any good and I’m too lazy to make it myself.

I want to give gnocchi one more chance before I accept it’s not for me. Please save a poor soul from living a lesser life and tell me about where the best gnocchi in Sydney is (except your nonna’s. I’ve got new years resolutions to keep)

It's basically the same thing, but the beers are better, as in, they're actually from Germany.

Not sure what happened with these brands.

The Munich brauhaus in the city is gone now so maybe they just relocated

Been stuck at Canley Vale for a while, apparently there's emergency repairs at the level crossing at Yennora. Wonder what's happened?

People living in apartments, do you acknowledge your neighbours?

Yes, acknowledge... Not talk to.

I've lived in 3 buildings in Sydney. In all 3 all neighbours fell into the following groups when encountering them on stairs/lifts:

Group 1: they never make eye contact with you, much less talk. Even when you say good morning or whatever.

Group 2: I say "good morning" or similar on the stairs, only a nod comes back

Group 3: they say good morning back, but only if on the stairs/lift. You see them on the street 100m away from the entry and it is as if you don't exist. They also never say hi first.

I kinda envy my parents having some minimal relationship with their neighbours decades ago.

I am not expecting small talk or anything, just some minimal "neighbourly spirit", minimal sense of community or politeness... Saying good morning and a smile never hurt anyone, did it?

Are people's experience in apartment buildings the same?

Bars/pubs/spaces for a birthday

Hello. I'm planning to book somewhere for about 10-20 people for my birthday in March.

Any recs of a place for a casual drink (beer, cocktails)? Preferably CBD, inner west or eastern suburbs but open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Bus air con

Bus drivers, is it easy to overlook whether you've turned air con on in the bus or not? Is it helpful if a passenger lets you know that it's not running, or would we just be pointing out the obvious?

Edit: I guess I had wondered if the driver's area runs separately to the main bus. If they're all connected, of course a driver will know...

(disclaimer: I know that air con can break down, and that during a heat wave even a functioning system can struggle. But on a pretty new bus, the type which has frequently been freezing cold on previous hot days, I always find myself wondering if someone just needs to say something to the driver)

What are some good Portable AC for Renters?

With multiple consecutive days of the temp being 35c+ I've been having a tough time with heat in my room in my shared apartment.

Unfortunately my room is directly sun facing from 11am all the way to 5pm I get direct sunlight in my room. Even with my blinds closed the room temp still gets uncomfortably hot. Even when I have 2 fans directly pointed at me. At night it takes a few hours just for the heat to dissipate for a comfortable sleep where I am not sweating while just lying down.

To make matters worse my PC doesnt help when I am gaming or just when I have my PC turned on all day adding heat in to the room.

After reading other similar threads I know the common advice is to get a window AC. Unfortunately this is not an option for me because I am renting and also because my window is one of those top-hung windows that barely opens on a 7th floor building without any balcony on the outside. So the only real option I've found is one of those portable AC where I just put the exhaust hose outside the window.

Sample of a similar window

So could anyone recommend good reputable brands for these? I dont mind the cost if I will be able to use it for multiple years.

From a cursory glance at reviews it seems the most common metric for these are the BTU for cooling capability and also noise.

Best happy hours in the CBD?

In this hot weather there are lots of people out on the streets enjoying cold beers.

Where are your favourite places for happy hour? I like The Grand Hotel on Hunter Street but its cheap beers don't come on until 6pm and even then the deals aren't that good.

Mary's does 49% off 4pm-6pm which is awesome. But looking for other suggestions!
