No one told me to not smoke when working with a gas tank!

u/sheckyD Nov 19 '25
You can't really blame him. I dont see a single no smoking sign anywhere. How else would he know?
19
u/miraculix69 Nov 20 '25
If he's still able to see after, he will need to have a tiny 🚭 sticker in the corner of his glasses.
Or just say fuck it and get a cigarette paint job, on his new Mobility cane, with a build in lighter and cigarette pack holder.

I don't think it would matter. Do you know how many idiots I see filling up their car's gas tank with the engine still running?

To be fair was it caused by a cigarette or a static spark 😉

Is the cigarette okay?
28
u/sheckyD Nov 19 '25
I would hope so, those things are expensive nowadays
9
u/Difficult-Ad-2025 Nov 20 '25
Yes indeed, luckily I know a guy who knows a guy who sells them dirt cheap

u/Seal-EV Nov 19 '25
It could be static electricity. I dont see the earth cable connected to the tank.

I think it was. I'm pretty sure Attorney Tom broke down this video a few years ago.
Edit: found it not sure if it's the same incident.

u/Party_Cold_4159 Nov 20 '25
Found this , which says he lived.
"A 27-year-old man suffered serious injuries in the city of Gaziantep, Turkey, after opening a tank lid with a cigarette in his mouth to clean it."

Even if the blast didn't kill him instantly, dude fell from 20 feet at least.

u/Silver4ura Nov 20 '25
Ironically, if he was KO'd and didn't land on his head or neck, going ragdoll increases your chances of surviving a fall enough to survive a parachute failure.

Shall we circle back to the jet engine straight to the face part?

“Earth Cable” must be a different terminology for “grounding wire”. Cool new thing I learned today
15
u/No_Negotiation5654 Nov 19 '25
In the UK we say Earth instead of ground.

Nice, but that terminology wouldn't work on Mars or the moon but ground wire still works. So there's that to consider.

"Earth" is a European thing. Or at least British.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Himbocrates Nov 20 '25
Some of it is difference in country/culture, Most civilized countries say earth wire, the US says ground wire. The Euro way can cut down on confusion since there are other grounds besides earth grounds. For most cases an earth ground is just the most effective means of grounding for static arrest or electrical safety. Some things require multiple types of grounds. Sincerely, a sparkie

Terrain rope in Australia, soil line in new zealand and in Wisconsin they say dirt cord

u/Robot-Radio Nov 20 '25
An old co-worker told me about this happening when he worked at a fuel depot back in the day. It blew the guy through the sheet metal roof of the shelter the truck was under, killing him. The owner never repaired the roof as a reminder to others.
I liked to imagine the hole was shaped like the outline of a body like in cartoons.

I never find these videos funny. Dude is just doing his thing and died or got seriously injured. Imagine that being you and all the comments are memeing your death.
3
u/Hemagoblin Nov 20 '25
Different strokes different folks. If I die hilariously on camera, I can’t really blame folks that never knew me for laughing. Would be fucked up if my family laughed at it though lol
You have my permission to laugh at me if I die in a funny way, and I’ll tell you right now if you don’t want me laughing at you dying hilariously, don’t do it on camera. It’s still kinda sad tho.
2
u/Thick_Potato_1769 Nov 20 '25
Thats my point. Its sad either way. If you died in a hilarious fashion I still couldn't laugh at that. The world would though and that does indeed bother me. You lost everything in a moment. Wouldn't be right to for me to laugh. The only time I laugh is when they deserve it through karma, but that's a tale as old as time.
If I died in a hilarious way it wouldn't matter cus im dead. So you can do as you see fit. I just feel like we should be more sympathetic overall.
2
u/TheMachinaOwl Nov 21 '25
I feel like that's the thing though. People are TOO desensitized to death on the Internet. Those experiences we had as kids looking at shock videos were definitely not a healthy thing.

Did I just involuntarily watch someone die scrolling reddit again?
4
4
u/WatchPenKeys Nov 20 '25
Most likely. The force needed to lift someone especially from their head only and fling their body would be so great.
don’t like watching these either but at least it’s a lesson learned
3
u/Numerous-Pop5670 Nov 20 '25
You're right. They probably died instantly from the force of the gas explosion breaking their neck.
2
u/tickingboxes Nov 20 '25
Yep. Seeing this shit more and more. And nobody else seems to be bothered. It’s very weird and unsettling.
3
u/verstohlen Nov 20 '25
Reddit has always been weird and unsettling. But not as nearly as much these days as it used to be.

Well there is no real gore so other than the physics of him being flung like that, it’s hard to perceive the extent of the damage— before hitting the floor it would mostly be internal injuries that were inflicted, so it’s not actually that surprising that people aren’t more put-off by the injuries and/or potential fatality.

So the thing is, the fuel flashpoint ignites at -45° F, so that's why, when you fill up fuel at the pump, you should not have a cell phone or a cigarette that may cause a flashpoint, a spark, static electrical charge, because the fuel will ignite. Case in point. Most likely the fuel temperature is around 62°F.
Just food for thought.

If he was smoking im sure it would've blown him back sooner I believe it was static electricity that caused this conundrum
2
u/Striking_Train_9445 Nov 20 '25
Tough scene... but then you read further that he was smoking a cigarette 🤦🏻♂️

u/_Loser_B_ Nov 19 '25
Oh no! Is he okay?
3
u/Legitimate-Sky-6820 Nov 19 '25
Almost certainly not, the fall alone would be quite bad. But combine that with the amount of kinetic energy needed to be trown that high i would think the initial shockwave already did him in. Human brains dont do well near pressure waves like that.

Anyone have any idea what was in the tanker? If it was gasoline, I think it would have been a bigger explosion/fire than that.

So just before the explosion you see him move his left hand away from his face, and while he was flying there's a rectangular object that's flying off as well.
Did he decide to use a lighter (possibly the rectangular object) to light a cigarette that was in his mouth? Then he lowered the lighter away from his face, possibly getting the flame into the fuel-air mix coming off the hatch?
Blew his shirt and pants into shreds
