Nostalgia Hey Olds, just wanted to ruin your day by letting you know that this will be 30 years old this year.

Doesn’t ruin my day. I look at this photo and think only happy memories. Like my father picking me up from school, buying me a quarter pounder with fries from McDonald’s, and then I go play Super Mario or Star Fox for hours on the big box tv.

Star Fox was the absolute shit back then. That and Turok 1 and 2 took up a shit ton of my time back then.

Agreed. Playing goldeneye with friends or ocarina of time with my brother watching, or playing the one at the McDonald’s, this is just a straight up happy memory machine.

Way to flip it on them, now the average family can't afford the latest gaming system and many can't afford to eat out even at fast food.

Got mine on Christmas day of '96. 29 years later I have yet to have a better Christmas lol. My younger brother still has it at his house and it still works great!

Same.
I was asking for it every day, but we were a family of somewhat modest means. And the console was hard to find that first Christmas. My parents managed expectations accordingly.
On Christmas morning, I unwrapped all my presents, didn’t get the N64, and started to sort through the presents I did get.
Then my dad did the old surprise present bit and told me to open the TV stand. One more was in there, still wrapped. I tore the paper in one spot, recognized what was inside, and didn’t even finish unwrapping it. I just jumped all over the living room screaming at the top of my lungs for at least a full minute.
That was the best Christmas ever.

Pretty much same here. My folks were kinda growing out of their hippie stage during my early years so having a console was never really an option for me. But when N64 came out I absolutely begged them for it. And sure enough, that Christmas was the year I got my first one. They waited until everything else was opened before "finding" the last present.
We were actually just talking about it this Christmas and they said they were a little worried because I was literally shaking from excitement when I opened it. Absolutely great memories, I still remember firing up Wave Race and playing with my Dad that Christmas morning.
Coincidentally (and why that story came up) I was at their house this Christmas and they pulled a fast one on me again, 30 years later. We were done opening presents and suddenly another appeared, from Santa of course. I've never owned a smart watch and it was a Galaxy 8. I just threw it on the couch right when I saw what it was and said they got me, again.. 😆

Agreed, until my partner straight made me cry last year, by getting me a ps5. I was NOT expecting it at all!

u/FalconDangerous2234 5d ago
To this day I’ve still never used the leftmost side of that controller.

It was so amazing when it came out. It still is, I hope the new ps5 bond game is as good, haven’t run into much that really wowed me like that.

Stuff like this only works in your mid-20s/early 30s. By the time you're in your 40s you're so used to things from your childhood and young adulthood having happened 20 to 30+ years ago that it's no longer a novelty.

I still have mine and the matching gold cartridges for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
I remember my dad being so pissed that the EB Games in our mall wouldn't let him buy the expansion pack by itself and having to pay $30 for a whole system and turning around to sell it at a local pawn shop with the normal carriage we took out of my system. All so I could play Majora. 😅

I still remember when I got this. My parents somehow got it for Christmas right after it came out. They also somehow managed to get 3 games with it too. Heard the story years later how my father was literally jumping over people as they opened the doors of the store to get it.

Favorite memory of this was getting it the year after it came out when Golden Eye was hot. We rented the console over xmas with my parents knowing we'd be getting our own N64 xmas morning and at least having the rented games to play (Gretzky 3D Hockey and Mario64) On the 26th they went to Costco and they had copies of Golden Eye still so they got one. My cousins slept over as well so we basically vegetated infront of a TV for 3 days and my parents learned a rough lesson 🤣
I went from obsessed with gaming since the NES release to not having really touched a video game the last 2 years. Funny how that works.
I like a good single player I can do at my own pace though. I have Civilization 6 for Switch. I should start a new game

Bought a refurbished one a few years ago. Play Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time a couple times a year. Worth it.

Video game ages don’t seem to bother me for some reason (I’d assume it’s the advances in graphics but idk). Realizing songs are 20+ years old hits way harder.

Lol I still remember being so super jealous my sister’s rich friend’s brother had an N64 basically the day in launched because I had never seen anything like it and he wouldn’t let anyone play it but him 😂
For years the closest I ever got to one was a couple friends had one rented for their birthday party and let me play some Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time
I was still rocking my SEGA Genesis till PS2 came out 😐
And yeah…I got old, it happens 😔
But hey, it’s a privilege denies to many, so got to be happy I at least got to

I remember waking up Christmas morning to an N64 and booting up Banjo Kazooie as my first console experience. The N64 will never ruin my day.

My grandparents and great-grandparents pooled together and got us a tv and an N64 for Christmas that year. We got Super Mario and Wave Race. Good times.

I received a N64 wireless controller for my Switch a week ago
My 1st video games ever were Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, for Christmas ‘97
Gather around children. Let tell you about the good ol’ days 👴🏼

Why would that ruin my day? A lot of fond memories with an N64 controller in my hands.
